Senator Sherrod Brown isn't the first Democrat to bring up Hitler and Stalin comparisons to Republicans who want public union reforms. The signs all over the Madison protests made the comparison too:

The Hill: Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) took to the Senate floor Thursday to defend labor unions, saying that dictators like Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin opposed them. Brown said that unions have wrongly come under attack from Republicans and conservatives, who are pitting workers against one another in states like his, where governments are taking action on anti-union legislation. Though he said he was not making a direct comparison, Brown claimed that "some of the worst governments we've ever had" have opposed labor unions.

"As a nation, I look back in history and some of the worst governments we've ever had, you know one of the the first thing they did? They went after the trade unions," he said. "Hitler didn't want unions, Stalin didn't want unions.

That simply isn't true. In fact, if we're going to start making Hitler-Stalin analogies, perhaps the Democrats should be a little more careful.

The fact is, both dictators loved unions - as long as they were beholden to the party. Sort of like the Democrats and organized labor in this country don't you think? Can you imagine a union breaking ranks and going Republican? What do you think the reaction of other unions would be to that?

Unions in America may be "independent" from government control in the grossest sense, but as we saw when Democrats are in power, the difference between "government" and "party" shrinks to nothing. As long as 97% of union campaign contributions go to Democrats, we have no independent unions in America and the analogy to Hitler and Stalin's union policies are much more apt if you compare them to Democrats rather than Republicans.

Don't you just love how much the Democrats lie about the other side and their true intentions.......

Hitler abolished unions in 1933 and arrested all of the labor leaders in the country.

INDEPENDENT unions, perhaps. Labor unions, no.

Here's an article from a 1935 issue of "Literary Digest" that is interesting.

"I visited many plants in these districts where violence and terror reigned right up to the time Hitler was elected Chancellor in 1933. Had any of these workers been Communists? I asked. Yes, one of them had. Why had he become converted to National Socialism? Because Hitler had given him everthing Communism had promised: now he could speak to the boss when he liked, and the boss always spoke to him. He was no longer considered the underdog . . . "
If you read the article, 1935 Germany sounds more like the "utopia" the libs envision. (Ooops, did I just compare them to Nazis? My bad . . . )

You need to read your own article. It was more similiar to an association than a labor union in that labor and employers were forced to belong to the same org.

The tone of the article suggests an all-powerful state where class divisions have disappeared (bosses = workers = kum-ba-yah). Happiness abounds!

I stand by my opinion (and it IS just an opinion) that this sounds more like the lib pipe-dream for the USA than a conservative one which promotes individual's rights.

It didnt' work out then, did it? And it sure as hell isn't going to work out now.

I didn't get that 'tone' from the article at all. Herding cats would seem a better analogy. And yes it didn't work because it wasn't a union. And trade associations tend to be just that..... associations.

And yes it didn't work because it wasn't a union.

You say it wasn't a union; the writer of the article and the consensus of the time says it was.

You lose.

Regardless, the disaster described within the article failed - not because it was or was not a union, but because centrally controlled and centrally planned governments - especially ones run by charismatic egomaniacal leaders - ALWAYS fail.

And THAT, dear Rek, is the lesson we need to chew on as we enter into the wonders of the Age of Obama.

Who cares? Mr Lobbyist.

But that's one hell of a union that would allow some of the membership to strike against other members.

And because the author of the article doesn't understand what an association is doesn't mean it isn't one. The consensus part on your part remains to be proven.

Fun with Dick and Jane.

See the public union people with their funny funny signs. They work for the taxpayers

See the public union people with their funny funny signs. Some of them are also taxpayers.

Gov Walker is a taxpayer and he works for the taxpayers.

Some public union people are taxpayers and they work for the taxpayers.

NEXT WEEK - LESSON TWO
Where the hell are the taxpayers?

I love getting you lobbyists to strut your stuff. All money in the US originates with, which you are allowed to use as long as you give them their cut, the Federal Reserve which is PRIVATE and probably foreign owned but who knows, and evidently the taxpayers could care less.
