MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — Frank Buckles, the last surviving U.S. veteran of World War I, has died. He was 110.

Buckles, who also survived being a civilian POW in the Philippines in World War II, died peacefully of natural causes early Sunday at his home in Charles Town, biographer and family spokesman David DeJonge said in a statement. Buckles turned 110 on Feb. 1 and had been advocating for a national memorial honoring veterans of World War I in Washington, D.C.

Buckles lied about his age to join the army at age 16.The Missouri native was among nearly 5 million Americans who served in World War I in 1917 and 1918.

"I knew there'd be only one (survivor) someday. I didn't think it would be me," he was quoted as saying in recent years.

Buckles drove an ambulance during the war. The Washington Post said that with Buckles' death, only a 109-year-old Australian man and a 110-year-old British woman were believed to survive from the estimated 65 million people who served in the 1914-1918 war.

On Nov. 11, 2008, the 90th anniversary of the end of the war, Buckles attended a ceremony at the grave of World War I Gen. John Pershing in Arlington National Cemetery.

"I can see what they're honoring, the veterans of World War I," he told CNN.

He was back in Washington a year later to endorse a proposal to rededicate the existing World War I memorial on the National Mall as the official National World War I Memorial. He told a Senate panel it was "an excellent idea." The memorial was originally built to honor District of Columbia's war dead. Born in Missouri in 1901 and raised in Oklahoma, Buckles visited a string of military recruiters after the United States entered the "war to end all wars" in April 1917. He was repeatedly rejected before convincing an Army captain he was 18. He was 16½.

"A boy of (that age), he's not afraid of anything. He wants to get in there," Buckles said. More than 4.7 million people joined the U.S. military from 1917-18.

Buckles served in England and France, working mainly as a driver and a warehouse clerk. The fact he did not see combat didn't diminish his service, he said: "Didn't I make every effort?"

An eager student of culture and language, he used his off-duty hours to learn German, visit cathedrals, museums and tombs, and bicycle in the French countryside.

After Armistice Day, Buckles helped return prisoners of war to Germany. He returned to the United States in January 1920.

Buckles returned to Oklahoma for a while, then moved to Canada, where he worked a series of jobs before heading for New York City. There, he again took advantage of free museums, worked out at the YMCA, and landed jobs in banking and advertising.

But it was the shipping industry that suited him best, and he worked around the world for the White Star Line Steamship Co. and W.R. Grace & Co.

In 1941, while on business in the Philippines, Buckles was captured by the Japanese. He spent 3½ years in prison camps.

"I was never actually looking for adventure," Buckles once said. "It just came to me."

He married in 1946 and moved to his farm in West Virginia in 1954, where he and wife Audrey raised their daughter, Susannah Flanagan. Audrey Buckles died in 1999.

In spring 2007, Buckles told the AP of the trouble he went through to get into the military.

"I went to the state fair up in Wichita, Kansas, and while there, went to the recruiting station for the Marine Corps," he said. "The nice Marine sergeant said I was too young when I gave my age as 18, said I had to be 21."

Buckles returned a week later.

"I went back to the recruiting sergeant, and this time I was 21," he said with a grin. "I passed the inspection ... but he told me I just wasn't heavy enough."

Then he tried the Navy, whose recruiter told Buckles he was flat-footed.

Buckles wouldn't quit. In Oklahoma City, an Army captain demanded a birth certificate.

"I told him birth certificates were not made in Missouri when I was born, that the record was in a family Bible. I said, 'You don't want me to bring the family Bible down, do you?'"

Buckles said with a laugh. "He said, 'OK, we'll take you.'"

Nah little "man", you know what a FRAUD and little gibbering bitch YOU really are. You are the most insecure and afraid person I have had the misfortune to encounter on the web.

YOU make phucaroo look sane and reasonable little "man".

It's losers such as you who makes the "real" combat vets like those who served in WW2 and Korea despise whiny Vietnam vets.

BTW little "man" REAL GOOD WORK SHOWING RESPECT FOR AMERICA'S LAST WW1 VETERAN'S PASSING.

I remember in particular one instance where this sad sack posted an article on a noted veteran that got attention and some thanked him for posting it, and he was eating it up.

I mean, he was like a starving man gobbling up any vicarious association with this guy and his story he could.

You are correct about his severe mental dysfunction he thinks nobody is wise to. It's why I don't get angry with him or pay him much mind but for the amusing spectacle he makes on line.

Someone like him say in an unconventional warefare operational area with a team would be such a security liability he likely would wind up dead and buried merely to save everyone else's lives.

Being a showboat and prone to actions that compromise security is an unforgiving situation where people can and do make hard choices.

LOL! That's pretty funny,Princess.

It's losers such as you who makes the "real" combat vets like those who served in WW2 and Korea despise whiny Vietnam vets.

Un,huh. And here you are, once again, insinuating that I'm not a "real combat vet" and that VN vets are whiny.

BTW, I do want to go on record right here and flat-out state that I NEVER shot down any MIGS.

Well,YOU are whiny,but you're not a VN vet. You MAY be a VN-Era vet,but that's it.

Which ironically enough bothers me not all at,but drives YOU nuts. Or even nuttier,if that is possible.

I know. It's really pathetic.

You are correct about his severe mental dysfunction he thinks nobody is wise to.

I know. The fact that he thinks nobody can see it only proves how delusional he really is.

It's why I don't get angry with him or pay him much mind but for the amusing spectacle he makes in line.

I'm a little embarrassed for him. Face it,nobody is that way because they want to be that way,and when he isn't foaming at the mouth he is a pretty intelligent guy that has worthwhile things to say and articles to post. Sadly, that part of him is disappearing into the background as the barking mad part of his personality takes over control.

Someone like him say in an unconventional operational area with a team would be such a security liability he likely would wind up dead and buried merely to save everyone else's lives.

Not slamming him,but I can think of no set of circumstances where any team going in on a hazardous mission would have him. Not even a infantry squad in the regular army or the USMC. He's just too unbalanced.

I know what you mean. When I visit Alaska I always here about how cabin fever, the lack of sun and booze drives people crazy up there. I think there is small coincidence to the fact he is a man in his sixties in an unforgiving climate with little contact with many people and the insanity that rages out of him.

He really should consider relocating to the lower forty eight in the next couple of years to see if that cures what ails him. Because what he's doing ain't working for him now.

And I can believe on line at Stone's place is the only place he is so dysfunctional.

And you are right about no one wanting him in the field on the ground with him. He reminds my of one kid that glommed on little old 'candy striper' me when I was in my SF unit going to TRADOC's 31C PMOS school to get a signal MOS to qualify for the 18E course.

He had dropped out of the Ranger's selection course and was trying to rhetorically grind his nose into my butt with was excruciatingly irritating. He wanted to pass himself off as knowledgeable, but he couldn't tell the difference between an SF canidate who had not gone to the Q Course yet and a tab qualified SF trooper.

I exasperation I interrupted his litany of B.S. about his fictional experience with all the weapons he fantasized about using and asked, "Tell me, Rick, can you shoot an azimuth?"

He responded, "Sergeant, I just done tol' you I can shoot anything in the Army inventory."

Buckles lied about his age to join the army at age 16.

Often, a local judge with parental guidance and authorized signatures permitted this sort of minor infraction; it is always true during a war.

Mad Dog, you bring dishonor to our fighting men. You have proved again, that your barking, growling and snarling singles YOU out as you post data that represents America's finest.

Yep little "man", YOU are a terribly insecure and afraid little "man".

You are so afraid of your little contribution being diluted, or overshadowed by those of others who did their duty.

YOU are what WW2 and Korean WAR vets despise most you little whiny bitch.

YOU are so insecure about YOUR honor and contribution that YOU have to insult and dismiss entire branches of the Armed Forces. YOU TRY to claim the right to say who is and who is not a "true" or "combat" veteran, even when it's against the Department of the NAVY and Department of Defense, who do decide, and who have decided.

YOU are a gibbering insecure deeply afraid little "man".

AND YOU don't get to make any of those calls, certainly not regarding me as an individual or anybody else you vile fraud.

YOU try to demand something which you have no idea of it parameters and reality. While YOU TRY to deny it to all others save those who YOU select. LOL! FOOL!

YOUR CLAIMED past service aside, (none of us gets to ride four decades unless you claim to have a CMH little "man"?), what YOU are NOW is a bitter angry scared little "man", without even a concept of what HONOR is.

BTW little "man" REAL GOOD WORK SHOWING RESPECT FOR AMERICA'S LAST WW1 VETERAN'S PASSING.

It's usually those vets who have seen the most active duty and been in the line of fire, who don't want to be reminded AND would be the first to laugh at you because they know what vets who act like you, aren't.

I see mail from you I'm not opening. I bet it's just another of your bile filled Spam-o-grams.

You get all worked up if you don't get strokes for posting and bumping about a veteran whom you want to feel vicarious honor from.

Which is your problem, not mine. I posted a picture to Stone in this thread and it's hard to post anything here in this thread without you playing umpire critiquing posts in it based on how well someone strokes you for being the thread parent.

You are a pitiful spectacle M. Doggie Dawg. Your disappointment is not in seeing honor given this man, your disappointment is in not getting posts that thank you for posting this.

You can blame me all you want, but that is happening mostly because one -- this is not eLPee where everyone panders to Sally who worked in the defense industry, and two -- because everyone here is hip to your tricks.

In the War between the states, boys were concerned about this sort of lie, so they would put a slip of paper in their shoe with the number 18 on it so they could say they were 'over 18' as they stood on that number.

You are so afraid of your little contribution being diluted, or overshadowed by those of others who did their duty.

You mean contributions like floating around on a boat offshore?

YOU TRY to claim the right to say who is and who is not a "true" or "combat" veteran, even when it's against the Department of the NAVY and Department of Defense, who do decide, and who have decided.

Blah, blah, blah. You had a chance to be a Corpsman and turned it down because you didn't have the balls. Learn to live with it.

The Navy is always going to consider floaters to be combat vets because that's how the brass get to claim combat status so they can get promoted.

If being a combat vet was that important to you,you should have enlisted in the USMC or the US Army instead of the Navy. They were both hiring the very day you enlisted. You didn't do this though,so live with your decision and shut the fuck up about it.

The best attitude I ever observed in terms of modesty was when I was a cherry (slang for new person) in jump school. I asked a Navy diver type who was either UDT or a Seal in my jump class what the diver's bell on his utilities was.

He said, "Well kid, I got that because I'm so good at cleaning up the Head." ( Slang for latrine/restroom)

Those Navy types were impressive. When the Black hats grass drilled us the first latrine/water break in ground week waving around termination papers for people to take to quit these Navy types were screaming at us from the front leaning rest position we all were in for no one to quit.

I heard of those guys even joining in a good grass drilling they observed an infantry AIT company doing just to do it to the consternation of the cadre present.

Seals and UDT people are modest and soft spoken to an incredible degree.

What the HELL is Mad Dog's problem? It is his thread and he went ballastic for no known reason other than he gives no honour to a man that served America.

Another drama queen and energy stealer. Actually wants to usurp Mr Buckle's notoriety and make this thread about him/herself.

If being a combat vet was that important to you,you should have enlisted in the USMC or the US Army instead of the Navy. They were both hiring the very day you enlisted. You didn't do this though,so live with your decision and shut the fuck up about it.

Oh, fuck, lol lol

What the HELL is Mad Dog's problem?

He got mad at me and a couple of other guys a year or so ago because he was writing about sailors on boats being in combat in VN,and people pointed out to him the very obvious truth that the US Navy and the US Air Force had waiting lists of people wanting to enlist during the VN war in order to avoid the draft and having to go to VN as a grunt with the US Army or the USMC. He's seen nothing but flashing "TILT!.....TILT!....TILT!" lights in his head ever since, and never passes up an opportunity to make personal attacks against me. At first it pissed me off,but then I came to realize he is mentally unbalanced.

"I adore John McCain, support him 100 percent and will do everything I can to support his reelection. As everyone knows, I was honored and proud to run with him. And Todd and I were with him in D.C. just a week ago." (Sarah Palin,Dec 2009) ************************************ DID Palin say or write these things or not? (Me) I don't know or F ing care. Those who have honor and truth decide.

NOT you little "man".

So I say again little "man", just to YOU little "man", just as an individual human being little "man".

YOU TRY to claim the right to say who is and who is not a "true" or "combat" veteran, even when it's against the over arching specific authority the Department of the NAVY and Department of Defense in this case, who do decide, and who have decided.

YOU are a sad, insecure, deeply afraid little "man".

AND YOU don't get to make any of those calls, certainly not regarding me as an individual or anybody else you vile fraud.

YOU try to demand something of which you have no idea of it's parameters or reality. While at the sam time YOU TRY to deny it to all others, except those who YOU select. LOL! FOOL!

YOU couldn't even control your own personal animus towards me and the US NAVY enough to allow this thread to stand in HONOR and RESPECT for the last actual WW1 veteran Mr. Buckles. (Who was obviously the oldest living US ARMY veteran before his passing also).

YOUR CLAIMED past service aside, (none of us gets to ride four decades unless you claim to have a CMH little "man"?), what YOU are NOW is a sad, bitter, angry, deeply scared, and self hating little "man", who doesn't even know what HONOR is.

BTW little "man" REAL GOOD WORK SHOWING RESPECT FOR AMERICA'S LAST WW1 VETERAN'S PASSING.

You know not HONOR little "man".

I've never heard sneakypete grab for all the vicarious or imagined honor you have. He's very soft spoken about his very honorable service in and out of combat. It's only in giving you the reality check you rate do you berate, pogy bait.

Stop sending mail. You are wasting your time making it, and mine deleting it unread.

I have an ironclad policy on Pmail, we are not getting along, we don't do mail.

Captain, Mad Dog IXX is in Ten Foward Lounge picking fights again claiming we wouldn't have Klingons and Romulans to worry about if his ancestor who owned a piece in the distruction of three obsolete Soviet Jets flown by Vietnamese had been allowed to run the world.
