MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — Frank Buckles, the last surviving U.S. veteran of World War I, has died. He was 110.

Buckles, who also survived being a civilian POW in the Philippines in World War II, died peacefully of natural causes early Sunday at his home in Charles Town, biographer and family spokesman David DeJonge said in a statement. Buckles turned 110 on Feb. 1 and had been advocating for a national memorial honoring veterans of World War I in Washington, D.C.

Buckles lied about his age to join the army at age 16.The Missouri native was among nearly 5 million Americans who served in World War I in 1917 and 1918.

"I knew there'd be only one (survivor) someday. I didn't think it would be me," he was quoted as saying in recent years.

Buckles drove an ambulance during the war. The Washington Post said that with Buckles' death, only a 109-year-old Australian man and a 110-year-old British woman were believed to survive from the estimated 65 million people who served in the 1914-1918 war.

On Nov. 11, 2008, the 90th anniversary of the end of the war, Buckles attended a ceremony at the grave of World War I Gen. John Pershing in Arlington National Cemetery.

"I can see what they're honoring, the veterans of World War I," he told CNN.

He was back in Washington a year later to endorse a proposal to rededicate the existing World War I memorial on the National Mall as the official National World War I Memorial. He told a Senate panel it was "an excellent idea." The memorial was originally built to honor District of Columbia's war dead. Born in Missouri in 1901 and raised in Oklahoma, Buckles visited a string of military recruiters after the United States entered the "war to end all wars" in April 1917. He was repeatedly rejected before convincing an Army captain he was 18. He was 16½.

"A boy of (that age), he's not afraid of anything. He wants to get in there," Buckles said. More than 4.7 million people joined the U.S. military from 1917-18.

Buckles served in England and France, working mainly as a driver and a warehouse clerk. The fact he did not see combat didn't diminish his service, he said: "Didn't I make every effort?"

An eager student of culture and language, he used his off-duty hours to learn German, visit cathedrals, museums and tombs, and bicycle in the French countryside.

After Armistice Day, Buckles helped return prisoners of war to Germany. He returned to the United States in January 1920.

Buckles returned to Oklahoma for a while, then moved to Canada, where he worked a series of jobs before heading for New York City. There, he again took advantage of free museums, worked out at the YMCA, and landed jobs in banking and advertising.

But it was the shipping industry that suited him best, and he worked around the world for the White Star Line Steamship Co. and W.R. Grace & Co.

In 1941, while on business in the Philippines, Buckles was captured by the Japanese. He spent 3½ years in prison camps.

"I was never actually looking for adventure," Buckles once said. "It just came to me."

He married in 1946 and moved to his farm in West Virginia in 1954, where he and wife Audrey raised their daughter, Susannah Flanagan. Audrey Buckles died in 1999.

In spring 2007, Buckles told the AP of the trouble he went through to get into the military.

"I went to the state fair up in Wichita, Kansas, and while there, went to the recruiting station for the Marine Corps," he said. "The nice Marine sergeant said I was too young when I gave my age as 18, said I had to be 21."

Buckles returned a week later.

"I went back to the recruiting sergeant, and this time I was 21," he said with a grin. "I passed the inspection ... but he told me I just wasn't heavy enough."

Then he tried the Navy, whose recruiter told Buckles he was flat-footed.

Buckles wouldn't quit. In Oklahoma City, an Army captain demanded a birth certificate.

"I told him birth certificates were not made in Missouri when I was born, that the record was in a family Bible. I said, 'You don't want me to bring the family Bible down, do you?'"

Buckles said with a laugh. "He said, 'OK, we'll take you.'"

Actually Mr. Buckles it likely isn't enough for some of "our" resident "heros" who "won" the Vietnam WAR all by themselves, (so they claim anyways).

BUT, it's MORE than enough to ALL actual sane and decent VETERANS and citizens of the USA.

RIP sir.

Actually, you are still full of shit, and still have a chip on your shoulder because you aren't a combat veteran. And don't try to feed me any shit about shooting down 3 MIG's. You didn't do it. IF you were even associated with such a action you never even saw the targets, much less personally shot them down.

Here is a little tip for you. If you haven't seen who you were shooting at and killing, haven't seen the return fire go past your head, and haven't seen the wounded and killed, you haven't been in combat.

If YOU have a personal problem with not going to corpsman school to become a corpsman and actually participating in combat, that is YOUR problem, not mine and not anyone else's because frankly I don't don't give a damn one way or the other. I was happy doing what I was doing and was doing it because I preferred doing that to floating around offshore on a boat. The Navy was hiring the same day I enlisted in the Army, but I just wasn't interested.

No, actually it is impossible for MD to have done MOST of the downed MIGs taken out by ship fire. If he had been such a person, we would all know his name and he would of been celebrated.

Sneakypete knows as well as I do there is an awful lot of stolen valor going on, and it is contemptible for MD to claim he shot down an impossible number of MIGs. If he had, he would of become celebrated.

MD knows this too, which is why he plays his boast down now in forum.

LOL!

It's not my fault that you doggies don't know squat about NAV OPS.

I have NEVER claimed to have the "MOST" to do with splashing THREEE MIGS you stupid grunt.

The US NAVY works by TEAMWORK, MY crew, MY TEAM, MY ships(s), had part of THREE MIG KILLS.

I have part of THREE MIG KILLS, because I was in charge of, and ran, the WEAPONS main battery air search radar.

I've explained this several times, but I guess there was a VERY good reason that you two MORONS had to go into the Army? You just aren't smart enough to ever get into the NAV.

You stupid little MORONS seem to think that killing MIGS was something exceptionally rare and special for missile ships on the line in Vietnam?

ALL of my service and claims are the truth, it's not a "boast" in any way. It's you two losers who TRY steal "valor" not me.

Do you see who takes the opportunity of this thread to attack another vet?

Yeah that's you weasel gurl, and your little butt buddy who "won" the Vietnam WAR all by himself, little "man" stinky petey.

You two foul little MORONS had to turn this thread about the last WW1 vet dying into an attempted attack on me and my service didn't you gurls?

Spit ...

YOU have NO honor, YOU are low life HYPOCRITICAL SCUM.

But, really, that's YOUR problem gurls.

God Bless AMERICA!

God Bless the US NAVY!

God Bless the Fleet!

"CAN DO!"

The US NAVY works by TEAMWORK, MY crew, MY TEAM, MY ships(s), had part of THREE MIG KILLS.

In other words,SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE in the US Navy shot down some MIGS,and since you were also in the Navy you claim partial credit for the shootdowns.

I have part of THREE MIG KILLS, because I was in charge of, and ran, the WEAPONS main battery air search radar.

You sat inside a steel room floating around off-shore and operated a radar system, and think THIS makes you a combat vet??????

Delusional doesn't begin to describe you.

ALL of my service and claims are the truth, it's not a "boast" in any way. It's you two losers who TRY steal "valor" not me.

ROFLMAO!

Yeah that's you weasel gurl, and your little butt buddy who "won" the Vietnam WAR all by himself, little "man" stinky petey.

Once again, you psychotic liar, where and when did I ever claim that?

His story certainly has changed. In the original version, Smelly Pooch alone claimed responsibility for personally shooting down three Migs.

As if it is a cutting edge feat anyway to shoot down badly trained pilots in outdated second hand Soviet aircraft that is part of the armed forces of a small, third world nation.

AND.......,HE had no part in the action. All he did was operate the radar and tell others were the MIGs were. And THAT is IF he is even telling the truth about this. Which is doubtful given his past history.

I still suspect he was booted out of the Navy at boot camp for "the good of the service" for being a little too enthusiastic about the idea of having "ship mates" and "hot bunking",if you know what I mean. This would explain his desperate attempts to play what he thinks are macho roles. He is over-compensating. I have told him before he would be happier if he just got it over with and came out of the closet, but he just ain't ready to make that move yet.

All this macho posing on at least 3 boards now,and the sad little fuck still doesn't realize that nobody would be impressed even if every claim he made was proven true because it was all 40 years ago and nobody really gives a damn.

You have to admit "I was on a boat with several hundred other guys, and the boat I was on along with several other boats and several airplanes took part in a joint effort to shoot down a couple of obsolete fighter planes from 20+ miles away, and this makes me a combat veteran!" is beyond desperate.

You would think a Navy veteran with at least 4 years of service during a shooting war would have at least talked to some Corpsmen and have SOME understanding of what combat really is.

Nah little "man", you know what a FRAUD and little gibbering bitch YOU really are. You are the most insecure and afraid person I have had the misfortune to encounter on the web.

YOU make phucaroo look sane and reasonable little "man".

It's losers such as you who makes the "real" combat vets like those who served in WW2 and Korea despise whiny Vietnam vets.

BTW little "man" REAL GOOD WORK SHOWING RESPECT FOR AMERICA'S LAST WW1 VETERAN'S PASSING.

Spit ...

I remember in particular one instance where this sad sack posted an article on a noted veteran that got attention and some thanked him for posting it, and he was eating it up.

I mean, he was like a starving man gobbling up any vicarious association with this guy and his story he could.

You are correct about his severe mental dysfunction he thinks nobody is wise to. It's why I don't get angry with him or pay him much mind but for the amusing spectacle he makes on line.

Someone like him say in an unconventional warefare operational area with a team would be such a security liability he likely would wind up dead and buried merely to save everyone else's lives.

Being a showboat and prone to actions that compromise security is an unforgiving situation where people can and do make hard choices.
