Opinions/Editorials Title: DO ALL THE NUTS COME FROM ONEONTA LIKE MEL GIBSON WHO NEEDS HELP SO SAYS THE LOCAL LIBERAL TRASH PAPER Mel Gibson needs help in many ways We wonder, like so many others, what secret mental demons have made movie superstar Mel Gibson so self-destructive. Gibson, with his parents and nine siblings, lived in a farm house on county Route 11 in Mount Vision for several years in the 1960s and attended Laurens Central School from first through third grade. Hes a charming man, a very likable, successful actor and director, an ardent Catholic, a millionaire many times over with a supportive and loving family. And apparently, hes a suicidal alcoholic. A source close to Gibson said the star was trying to kill himself before his car was stopped by sheriffs deputies Friday in Malibu. He was doing 87 in a 45 mph zone and was arrested for investigation of drunken driving. Gibson uttered a lengthy, profane anti-Semitic screed. Taken with what was generally regarded as a Jew-baiting publicity campaign for his highly profitable "The Passion of the Christ" movie in 2004 and his reluctance to disavow himself from his fathers Holocaust-denying views, it can be reasonably opined that Mel Gibson is a bigot. To his credit, Gibson has admitted that he has a serious alcohol problem and has issued two apologies through his publicist. Like every other task Gibson takes on, they were excellent, particularly the second statement, released Tuesday. "I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words," Gibson said. "Please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. ... I have begun an ongoing program of recovery and what I am now realizing is that I cannot do it alone. I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from during that drunken display, and I am asking the Jewish community, whom I have personally offended, to help me on my journey through recovery." We hope that Gibson is sincere, and that he isnt just another Hollywood star who gets into substance-abuse trouble, goes into rehab, emerges for a friendly interview with Larry King and morning talk show hosts, then goes about his merry way. The Jewish community, on the other hand, needs to extend the hand of friendship and caring to meet Gibson at least halfway as it has done with many former skinheads and other members of hate groups. "Anti-Semitism is not born in one day and cannot be cured in one day and certainly not through the issuing of a press release," Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, told The Associated Press. "When Mr. Gibson embarks on a serious long-term effort to address that bigotry and anti-Semitism, he will find the Jewish community more than willing to engage and help him." We certainly hope so, because right now, Mel Gibson needs all the help he can get.
