The most conservative person I know works for the state as a tax collector and lives in a rent controlled apartment.
There is a theory out there that "small govt" conservative is just a subliminal way reference to racism and that cutting back govt spending is just code word for no money to the "coloreds" and everything else is just window dressing.

The very right wing people I know are definitely snobs, but not necessarily racists.

Maybe racist is not the right word - but for sure "tribal" as in we are different form you. I have heard "regional" being bandied about also. Or of course people say they are not motivated by racists but maybe they are? They like the olden days of people being in social castes and knowing their place?

Here's an example
One friend told me that she and her family have high IQs and didn't think that some bureaucrat with an IQ of 120 should be telling them what they could or could not do in running their family business (you know, that regulation stuff).
The social caste and feeling of class entitlement fits better than racism - though racism can certainly fit under the cast umbrella.
