Walker, however, has gone much further than this. He estimates his proposal to increase all state employees’ contributions to their pension and health insurance would cost them 8 percent of their salary, or about $4,616. But for many workers, this is on top of the furloughs, meaning they could be losing as much as 11 percent of their salary. (Walker has said he’d like to end the furloughs, which continue through the current biennial budget, but has made no promise to do so.) Even at 8 percent, it’s a huge cut in pay for middle-class families.

Walker has said he has no choice, given the budget deficit, but he’s only gaining an estimated $150 million a year instituting these draconian cuts. Just a half-percent increase in the sales tax, going from 5 percent to 5.5 percent, would raise $400 million a year. Walker, however, won’t raise taxes; as I noted, his policy choices are bracingly clear.

His approach raises an issue of basic fairness. Union leaders argue that they have regularly given up salary increases in favor of benefit hikes. These negotiations were done in good faith (and mostly, I might add, with Republican governors Tommy Thompson and Scott McCallum over 16 of the last 24 years). Walker is basically saying, sorry, state government doesn’t have to live up to its past promises. Whatever you gave up in salary doesn’t matter; you will now contribute far more to benefits than previously agreed.

I don't know what the accepted practice is for quoting poster "Comments" following an article from another site so if I'm crossing a line here, please delete.

I work for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance, I make over $60,000 per year, have excellent benefits and have received annual bonuses for the past 10 years. There is no one size fit all private sector employee. It depends on who you work in determining how good or bad your benefit and compensation package is. My sister works for UW-Milwaukee as a University Service Associate 2 and after 12 years of service she now makes $27,000 per year (one of the higher salaries in her department), her husband died several years ago and she's raising 3 children alone. If the changes that are proposed go through, it means a $1600 reduction in her pay as she contributes to her mandatory retirement plan and another 119 per month or 1400 per year for health care, effectively cutting her pay $3,000 per year in addition to the unpaid furlough days she had to take between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. I will help my family, however this change affects 4 people my sister and her 3 children.

The cuts probably wouldn't be so bad if everything else was being cut, but the cost of groceries, gas, utilities, car insurance, rent/mortgages are still going up.

When did state workers become the enemy. When did they stop being tax payers too.

I'm pretty sure there are enough pet projects and other wasteful state spending that would more effectively address the state budget deficit as opposed to taking money from families and people who work for a living.

Bruf if this goes through as is, you best believe I'm signing a recall petition.

You aren't even close to crossing any line. Carry on.

What i'd like to know is how cutting teacher pay/benefits will somehow improve education. Logic says that if you want to attract top flight people, you pay higher salaries, but now Conservatives seem to think that the answer to our education woes is to pay teachers less.

jwpegler, walk me through the logic here because I just don't get it.

Certain people are bent on creating the illusion that the Wisconsin protesters are all teachers - time to dispel that myth.

" Premise Six: Civilization is not redeemable. This culture will not undergo any sort of voluntary transformation to a sane and sustainable way of living. If we do not put a halt to it, civilization will continue to immiserate the vast majority of humans and to degrade the planet until it (civilization, and probably the planet) collapses. The effects of this degradation will continue to harm humans and nonhumans for a very long time.

Here's how it works:

1) Meet in a shady smoke filled back room.

2) Take out of the US Treasury/budget what the Top 50 000. The Military. Health Care Insurance. Banksters. need.

3) The rest of the budget is then presented to the nation, from which the cuts necessary to 'balance' the budget will be taken.

4) This will be called Austerity.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat. As necessary. 8D

" Premise Ten: The culture as a whole and most of its members are insane. The culture is driven by a death urge, an urge to destroy life.

Premise Eleven: From the beginning, this culture—civilization—has been a culture of occupation."
