Meet the face of the new Texas: Jose Villagran, 39, first-generation Mexican American, four kids, suburbanite. Along with thousands of others like him, Villagran was born in Houston to Mexican parents and still works in the city, but he moved his family to this safer, cheaper suburb 14 miles south of Houston. Census data released Thursday show a robust statewide population spurt the past decade — adding more than 4.2 million residents, or 20.6% — attributed primarily to Hispanics such as Villagran, minorities born in urban centers but quickly spreading to suburbs and rural areas across the state. "There are more Mexicans here than ever before," Villagran, a buyer for a scrap metal company, says of Pasadena. "We've kind of taken over." And then some. Overall, Texas' population grew to more than 25 million, awarding the nation's second most populous state four more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Hispanics accounted for 65% of the state's growth since 2000, while non-Hispanic whites experienced the smallest increase of any group, just 4.2%. The black population grew by 22%. "We're seeing the development of two populations groups in Texas: aging Anglos and young minorities," says Steve Murdock, a former Census Bureau director and now a Rice University sociology professor. "We're seeing Hispanic growth not just deepen but become pervasive throughout the state." A healthy state economy during the recent recession and Mexican nationals fleeing drug cartel violence in Mexico also contributed to Texas' population boom, he says. Border towns saw sharp increases: Brownsville's population rose 25% and Laredo's by 33%. But natural Latino population increases — more Latinos born in the state than dying — were the main engine, he says. For the first time in recent history, Texas is less than half non-Hispanic white, dipping to 45%, the data shows. Hispanics make up about 38% of the total population. The state's burgeoning Hispanic population mirrors what's happening across the USA, Murdock says. "The Texas of today is the U.S. of tomorrow," he says. Another telling statistic: Texas added nearly 1 million children under 18 — 95% of them Hispanic, says William Frey, a demographer for the Brookings Institution. "That's the future of the state," he says. "It's a diverse one." The increased Hispanic numbers are expected to spark heated debate in the months ahead over how to redraw districts to accommodate the four new congressional seats and include more minority voters, says Ross Ramsey, managing editor of the Texas Tribune, an online political site. "That's the beginning of a political dogfight," he says. Texas' population surge came in four main areas: Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston-Galveston, San Antonio-Austin and the Rio Grande Valley, all areas with high numbers of Latinos. Those four areas account for 84% of the statewide gain. Houston remains Texas' largest city with 2.1 million residents. San Antonio moved up during the decade to the second slot with 1.3 million, trailed by Dallas with 1.2 million, the data show. In the Houston area, Latinos no longer are confined to the East End neighborhood, their historical enclave, says Deacon Joe Rubio, an administrator for Catholic Charities Houston. Historically white suburbs such as Katy, Dickinson and Pasadena are swelling with Latinos, he says. In Harris County, where Houston is located, the Latino population grew nearly 50% to 1.7 million and Asian Texans grew by 44% to 250,000, while the number of whites dropped from 1.4 million to 1.35 million — a 6% decline. "There is a significant spread from traditional barrios or neighborhoods to suburban areas and other areas where you wouldn't find them before," Rubio says. Once home to the Ku Klux Klan and the setting for the 1980 hit movie Urban Cowboy, Pasadena today is dotted with carnicerias (meat markets), washaterias (laundromats) and taquerias. The former Elks Lodge is now the El Palacio Real, hosting quinceañeras and other traditional Hispanic galas. Resident Raul Silva, 41, has seen the city transform since he moved his wife and two children here from Houston 12 years ago. He says he hopes the new Census figures give Hispanic Texans more political muscle and the ability to self-improve. "We need better representation," says Silva, stopping Thursday for a breakfast taco at Taqueria de Jalisco with his wife, Diana Selestino, 38. "I'd like to see it happen soon."

Got a citation to back the words of your urban legend? Even were this so, there you go again; ignoring alleged wrongs of the businesspeople/corporations and picking on rank and file workers. You are correct in that yes, business wants to destroy unions, the middle class and is only interested in more power and money; but you don't really want to go after them. They have money and power and could fuck people like you up if youn really went after them. It is much more fitting a bully and coward like you go after the poorest and least empowered people who couldn't get back at you and others for playing this whack the easiest target game.
I don't know how often what I cited is the case, but I know it is pretty damn often. My wife is Hispanic and knows a lot of folks here in cases just like I cited. (How did small towns in North Carolina become Little Mexico?) Not only do many of these folks do what I stated; they brag about it. Her reactions are mixed; she'd probably have more empathy with them if we could get away with it, too.

When I planted trees, companies sprung up that only hired Mexicans and people from Latin America that outbid us, and we heard how the logging and milling companies subsidized and empowered them with the benefits and capital to outbid companies like mine that hired those of use who had always planted. It is hard word, takes one to three hours to drive to than from the job site. Only one out of sixteen people who try planting are able to master the skill and can do it day after day despite weather, terrain, and the shear physical effort and endurance the job requires. 16-24 dollars an hour is fair wage for this work mandated to be done by law to create a sustained yield of timber. But those who pay for reforestation were willing to invest to destroy my employer and others like Jim Luzzi and Bob Boley of Greenhill Reforestation because they prefer the current paradigm where people drive that travel time, pay 20-70 dollars for rain gear, 100-300 dollars for work boots suitable for the job, and do it on 11-13 dollars an hour. I have many friends who are Mexican and plant trees because they were pawns and patsies in the game played to destroy my job. I focus my wrath on the corporations and companies that played the game out of greed and utter disregard for people. But as you show, you play a easier and more cowardly game and go after the pawns and patsies with never a thought to give any shit to those who designed and executed the game for financial gain.

Minuteman terrorist Shawna Forde being escorted out of Pima County Sheriff’s Office. When attackers burst into nine-year-old Brisenia Flores’ Arizona home the night of May 30, 2009, she was asleep on the couch in her family’s living room because she wanted to be close to the family’s new dog. It was one of the last memories Flores’ mother Gina Gonzalez has of her before their lives were ripped apart. Minutes later Gonzalez’s husband Raul Flores Jr. and Brisenia were dead, both were shot at point blank range. Gonzalez had been shot multiple times. She survived only by pretending to be dead, and then later by crawling to her kitchen to retrieve her husband’s gun and firing shots when the intruders returned. It’s a grisly tale, an already devastating crime made outrageous by the possibility that the people who stormed into the Gonzalez home were led by a border vigilante’s twisted racial animosity. The trial for three of Brisenia and Raul Flores’ alleged killers began this week in Arivaca, Arizona. First to be tried is 42-year-old Shawna Forde, the ringleader who allegedly paid drug dealers to go attack a competitor’s home. Forde’s defense has tried to paint Raul Flores as a dealer and a user, but the Daily Beast reports authorities who searched the apartment did not find anything besides pot residue in the house. The plan, the LA Times reported, was to raid people’s homes for cash and jewelry which would fund Forde’s border vigilante group the Minutemen. Gonzalez testified this week and said she could hear her daughter ask why her mother and father had been shot, and then silence as suspected killer Jason Bush reloaded his gun before shooting Brisenia twice in the face. Forde’s attorney insists there is no physical evidence that links Forde to the scene of the crime and that Forde was merely an eccentric who would boast about unrealistic plans to rob drug dealers. Gonzalez could not pick Forde out in a lineup weeks after the murders. But when Forde was arrested several days after the murders, she was found with Gonzalez’s wedding ring and other personal belongings. Forde faces two counts of first degree murder charges, one count of attempted first degree murder and five separate counts of armed robbery, burglary and aggravated assault, according to the blog Immigration Clearinghouse, which is following the trial. Her two co-defendants, Bush and Albert Gaxiola, will be tried after her. The portrait of Forde that has emerged is one of a self-imagined border security crusader who would finance her anti-immigrant activities with violent robberies. Forde had a habit of ending her emails with the sign off, “Lock and Load” and had close ties with tea party groups. She was involved with the Minutemen American Defense—her supporters claim she was once a Minuteman National Director—a loose affiliation of anti-immigration border activists who took to policing the border on their own with guns and surveillance equipment. Forde has also had ties with the anti-immigrant Federation for American Immigration Reform. These groups have all been labeled hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center. FAIR has distanced itself from Forde, and the Minutemen have disavowed one of their most enthusiastic members. This week’s proceedings were interrupted by the antics of Laine Lawless, one of Forde’s Minutemen cohorts and a potential witness. The Arizona Daily Star reported yesterday that Pima County Superior Court Judge John Leonardo immediately sent the jury out of the room when he became aware that Lawless had snuck into the courtroom wearing a black wig, black trench coat and sunglasses. Because she is a potential witness, Lawless is barred from entering the courtroom or having contact with Forde, but said she had the right to be in the courtroom as a “citizen reporter.” The judge disagreed, and barred her from entering the courtroom and the courthouse until or unless she’s called to the stand. It was a truly odd turn for an already surreal murder case. The trial is expected to last up to six weeks. Attorneys said Lawless had violated other court orders not to talk about the case online or to the media. She and another person posing under Forde’s identity had been posting messages on Facebook lambasting the trial proceedings since the trial began. Lawless is the founder of several pro-Forde websites, including justiceforshawnaforde.com. Underneath a photo of Forde, the website has a string of lines: “Racially profiled, false arrested, political agenda prisoner.” Others draw different conclusions. “This was a horrible, tragic, and absolutely race-based coldblooded murder,” Phoenix radio talk show host Carlos Galindo told the Daily Beast, “and we allowed the far right to muddy it up and say her dad was a drug dealer and Brisenia was collateral damage. FIRE Coalition - Operation Body Count June 9, 2008, Mackenzie Maddox (6 years old) and her mother Andrea Maddox (25 years old) were simply crossing the street in West Allis County. Mackenzie Maddox died at the scene while her mother was taken to nearby hospital where she later was released for her injuries. The murderer, Jose A. Rodriguez, an illegal alien that ICE had deported just months earlier in February 2008, waited at the scene for authorities. Terrance Aeriel, Dashon Harvey, Iofemi Hightower, and Natasha Aeriel were hanging out, listening to music in an elementary school yard in Newark, New Jersey on a Saturday night in August, 2007. They were close friends and planned to be together at Delaware State University in the fall. Around 11:30 p.m., three of the four were murdered, forced to lean up against a wall, and shot execution style at close range in rapid succession. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Natasha Aeriel survived being shot in the head and multiple knife wounds. She was courageous in helping to provide information on the multiple killers involved. Jose Carranzo, a known criminal alien from Peru was arrested. A warrant was issued for Rodolfo Godinez, an illegal alien from Nicaragua, a principle player in the murders. (1) Two fifteen year olds were arrested and may be tried as adults. On the evening of November 1, 2006, Adrienne Shelly, 40 years old, was found strangled with a bed sheet, hanging from a curtain rod in an apartment she used as an office in Manhattan. The death appeared to be suicide. Adrienne was the adoring mother of a two year old child, wife, actress, talented director and screen writer. (1) A dusty footprint found at the scene led the police to Diego Pillco, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador. Pillco confessed to murdering Adrienne and staging it to look like a suicide because he feared deportation. (1) Pillco said Adrienne complained about construction noise and threatened to call the police. He followed her into her apartment and struck her until she was unconscious on the floor. Pillco claimed he thought she was dead. Pillco then choked her with a bed sheet and knotted it around the curtain rod, killing her by strangulation. (2) In the courtroom, Pillco told a different story. His intended to rob Adrienne. He followed her into her apartment, stealing money from her purse. Adrienne fought back, scratching Pillco’s face. He punched her until she was unconscious. He made it appear she hung herself. (2) Police believe he intended to sexually assault her. In a deal negotiated with the Manhattan district attorney, Pillco pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter, avoiding a jury trial. He was sentenced to a fixed 25 years in prison. Kelynn Byrd, an innocent two year old child, was kicked to death. Kelynn died of “blunt chest and abdominal trauma” on August 12, 2007, in Coweta, Illinois. Michael Hernandez, an illegal alien, allegedly confessed to the violent murder. (1) Exiting the apartment after an argument, Kelynn’s mother left him in the care of Hernandez. When she returned home it was obvious something was wrong with her baby. She called 911 and Kelynn was taken to a Tulsa hospital. It was too late. (2) “Whatever kind of anger that can lead up to someone doing that to a 2-and-a-half-year-old boy is just beyond me”, the toddler’s grandmother, Michelle Ebel said. Burying her grandson was the hardest thing she ever had to do said Ebel.(3) Michael Hernandez was ordered to be held in the Wagoner County Jail without bond. He was charged with first degree murder in the kicking death of Kelynn Byrd. (1) Jordin Paulder, nine years old, was murdered with an ax on June 5, 2007. Santos Cabrera Borjas, an illegal alien was suspected. Jordin was a sweet, chubby-cheeked 9 year old boy. On June 5, 2007, he was playing with his younger brother and a friend when a red car with a ‘wobbly wheel’ drove by them. Jordan warned the driver of the bad tire. An occupant of the car became enraged and made an obscene gesture toward Jordin. Jordin apologized. The man stepped out of the vehicle and slammed an ax into 9 year old Jordin Paulder’s face twice, embedding it. (2) Jordin was transported to Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta. Paramedics were afraid to remove the ax. Jordin Paulder died. (3) Police attempted to interview a Honduran native, Borjas. He fled across the street to another apartment complex. From a second or third story stairway, Borjas threw a tire at Officer Alexis Powell, breaking his arm. Office Powell fired 3 shots, killing Borjas, after Borjas charged him with a stick. (4) The police say they are “99% sure” Borjas was the murderer.(2) Borjas had been released on Friday from the Fulton County Jail after serving time for ‘criminal trespass’. (5) The car was located and two juveniles questioned. Jordin’s mother was worried about her family’s safety and went into hiding. (6) Gloria Marie Applegate’s body was found in an alley in Hamilton, Ohio, on Sunday, June 1, 2008. She was allegedly murdered by Daniel Estrada-Lopez, an illegal alien from Mexico. “I love you”, Matthew Henneken said to his wife, Patricia, at the end of their cell phone conversation. Those were the last three words Matthew, her husband of one year, would ever speak to Patricia. (1) In 2003, twenty-one year old Angie Leon of Nampa, Idaho, was murdered by her estranged husband, a known criminal alien. Leon had 59 arrests, 38 of which were charges of domestic abuse against Angie, her children and another family member over a five year period. (1) On the morning of Christmas Eve, 2006, the Ceran family was driving home from a performance of “A Christmas Carol” and last minute Christmas shopping. Three members of the family were tragically killed, allegedly by Carlos Prieto, an illegal alien. Screaming, “Oh, God, Help me! Help me!” Amanda Duran ran for her life from ex-boyfriend, Gilberto Cruz. (1) Cruz, AKA Eduardo Espinoza-Martinez, the name he was using from a prior arrest, was an illegal alien. (2) The United Veterans Club of Altoona, Pennsylvania, was the site of the Altoona’s first-ever triple homicide in 2005. It was committed by Miguel Padilla, a known criminal alien on August 28. Thanksgiving night, 2006, Jennifer Bower and Corporal Brian Mathews were on their second date. Stopped at a red light in Columbia, Maryland, Eduardo Morales-Sorianno, an illegal alien, crashed into their car spinning it around and breaking the windshield. Morales-Sorianno had a blood alcohol level four times the legal limit. (1) Both Jennifer, 24, and Brian, 21, died from injuries at the Baltimore Shock Trauma Center. (2) Four children, Jesse and Hunter Javens, Emilee Olson and Reed Stevens of Cottonwood, Minnesota, were killed when a van, allegedly driven by an illegal alien from Guatemala, Olga Franco, broadsided their school bus after running a stop sign, toppling it over onto a pickup truck. In the early evening of December 28, 2006, four year old Joshua Morrow and a Morrow family friend, Ronald Bishop, forty-two, were struck by an SUV when crossing the Courtney Campbell Causeway near Tampa, Florida. Ronald’s truck had broken down and he was taking the little boy for a drink. Going 40-45 mph, Armando Lopez-Canada, an illegal alien, hit Josh and Ronald and left them lying on the pavement as he sped away. Witnesses said Lopez-Canada slowed down and then took off down the parkway. A doctor and other drivers at the scene desperately tried to resuscitate the two victims of the hit and run. (1) Rodney Johnson, a 40 year old police officer, served the people of Houston for 12 years. He was honored for his service with two HPD Lifesaving Awards and the Texas Medal of Valor. (1) Johnson was a kind-hearted, family man who loved his job by all accounts. Officer Johnson “believed he could make life better for others” and he died while serving his community. (2) He was murdered by Juan Leonardo Quintero, an illegal alien. On April 24, 2004, Troy Payton was stabbed in the chest with a butcher knife so aggressively he died within minutes. The perpetrator of the crime was Abimael Azmitia-Montalvos, an illegal alien. The lives of two young friends, Alison Kunhardt, 17, and Tessa Tranchant, 16, ended on March 30th, 2007, in Virginia Beach, VA. They were killed by Alfredo Ramos, an illegal alien. Violence rocked the residents of peaceful Whidbey Island, Washington, on June 20, 2002. Marjorie Monnett and, her daughter, Holly Swartz, were murdered in cold blood by Preston Dean “Hugh” Douglas, an illegal alien. Dani Countryman was 15 years old in the summer of 2007. Dani lived in Texas and was described as having “an infectious smile and loving heart” by those who knew her.(1) While visiting Ashley in Milwaukee, Oregon, Dani Countryman was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered by two illegal aliens, Gilberto Rivera-Gamboa and Alejandro Rivera-Gamboa. On April 29, 2002, Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy David March, 33, was on routine uniformed patrol, driving a black and white patrol vehicle near Irwindale, CA. At approximately 10:30 a.m., March initiated a traffic stop, entering the vehicle's license plate on his Mobile Data Terminal. Less than two minutes after the entry, a passing motorist observed Deputy March lying in the street bleeding. Deputy March was shot several times, at close range, by a single gunman and died from his wounds.(1)

Officer Daniel Golden, 28, served the people of Huntsville for three years on the Huntsville, Alabama police force. At 3:30 p.m. on August 29, 2005, he was murdered by Benito Albarran, an illegal alien.
Officer Golden was answering a 911 domestic abuse call from Albarran’s wife at the restaurant they co-owned. As he got out of his patrol car, Albarran came out the front door and began firing. The officer returned the gunfire, walking backward. Golden’s gun jammed. Holding his hands up in a gesture of surrender, Daniel Golden pleaded for his life. He fell to the ground dropping his pistol. Albarran fired two shots into Golden’s face. (1) The officer died two hours later at Huntsville Hospital.
Albarran smoked a bummed cigarette and leaned up against a car until the police came. At first Albarran denied involvement, saying he was out back mowing grass when he heard gun shots. (2)
According to a close friend, Don Webster, Daniel Golden loved police work. Newly married Daniel Golden left behind a wife, three step-children and a grieving family. (3)
The 12 member jury found Albarran guilty of capital murder. After about 5 hours of deliberation, the jury voted 10-2 to recommend the death penalty for Albarran. The sentencing hearing has not been scheduled. (4)
From text messages between the victims, it appeared the victims struggled against their unknown attackers. Robbery appeared to be the motive. (2)
The alleged assassins have been charged with three counts of murder, four counts of first-degree robbery, one count of attempted murder, various weapons offenses, and one count of conspiracy to commit the crime of robbery. (1)
Jose Carranzo, with a fraudulent Social Security number was arrested on charges of raping a five year old and threatening the child and the parents. He faced a 31 count indictment. He was also arrested for a bar fight. Immigration officials knew of his illegal status from prior arrests but did nothing. (3)
Gloria Marie, 32 years old, had a history of mental illness dating back to her childhood. She was described as a “troubled girl” by her sister, Jovetta Griffin. Jovetta said protecting Gloria Marie was difficult because the family was unable to get her declared ‘incompetent’, the law was not in their favor. Her uncle, Don Applegate said Gloria Marie “didn’t think anyone would hurt her”. (1) (2)
Gloria Marie Applegate’s naked body was discovered at 3:15 a.m. She had been shot in the head and sexually assaulted, according to the coroner’s report. Estrada-Lopez was “indicted on a single count of aggravated murder with a gun specification” by a grand jury. The Butler County Prosecutor said detectives believe Estrada-Lopez “forced himself on her” and “that resulted in her shooting”. The prosecutor described Gloria Marie’s killing as “cold-blooded at “close range”. (3)
Estrada-Lopez was wanted on several outstanding warrants but they were not specified. He is being held on $1.5 million bond. A trial date of September 30, 2008 was set by the judge. (4) Estrada-Lopez may face life in prison if convicted.
Patricia Henneken was killed in the early morning hours of Memorial Day, 2006, in Hampton Estates, Illinois, by Javier Rico, an illegal alien. Patricia’s car was broadsided by the intoxicated Rico after he ran a stoplight with his headlights off, traveling at least 100 mph.
Patricia’s death left behind a devastated and inconsolable 8 year old son. Sandy Innis, Patricia’s mom was shocked by her only daughter’s death and the inexplicable circumstances of the driver. Javier Rico was an illegal alien, had no driver’s license, prior DUI’s, and was wanted on a warrant for not showing up in court for an earlier drunk driving charge. (1) (2)
When Innis called United States Senator Dick Durban from Illinois to discuss her daughter’s killing, she was given the abrupt and disingenuous response, “it is too costly to send illegal aliens back to their countries”. (2) Matthew stated, he had not heard ‘straight answers’ for a death that was preventable. (1)
Javier Rico pled guilty to aggravated driving under the influence. As a result of Rico’s plea, he was sentenced to 8 years in prison.

On the morning of May 19, 2003, Angie’s mom, Sylvia Flores, came to drive Angie to work. A call from a pay phone, on caller ID, indicated to Angie another unwanted visit and confrontation with Abel was imminent. (1) Angie, frantic, made her mother flee with the children. Abel dragged her, at gunpoint, into her apartment while her children and mother watched in horror. Abel shot her twice in the head and once in the chest at close range. Sylvia Flores, called 911 from her car, but they arrived too late to prevent Leon from murdering the lovely young mother of three.
Abel pled guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. Sylvia Flores, Angie’s mother, sued Canyon County for denying her daughter equal protection under the law when prosecutors released Leon after accepting a plea agreement, despite his record of abuse, a month before he shot Angie. She received $925,000 to settle the lawsuit. (2)
Allegedly, Prieto, intoxicated, ran a red light and smashed into the Ceran’s car in Murray, Utah, killing Cheryl, 47, and Ian, 15 instantly. Julianna, 7, died later at the Primary Children’s Medical Center where she was admitted with, Caleb, 12, who had a broken pelvis and ribs. The car “wrapped” around 19 year old Clarissa’s legs. Husband and father, Gary Ceran, survived the accident along with the two injured children.
Prieto, a Mexican national, was described as “smelling strongly of alcohol and having glassy blood shot eyes” at the scene of the accident. (1) Carlos Prieto was arraigned and charged with three counts of automobile homicide, three counts of driving under the influence, and driving without a license. He will be turned over to ICE when the criminal case is resolved.
1n 2004, Prieto was cited for speeding and given a fine. (1) Jail records stated he had two prior arrests for drunk driving. (2)
Cruz went to Amanda’s home on October 4, 2006, angry about her decision to break up. Amanda would not reconcile. He was hiding a sawed-off shotgun and three shells in his shirt. Cruz’ gun misfired twice. They had struggled over the gun.
Amanda fled to a neighbor, knocking and begging for help. Before anyone could respond, Cruz shot Amanda Duran in the back of the head from a few feet away. He left in a pick-up truck. “Just drove off like nothing happened”, a witness observed. (3)
If I knew how to operate a shotgun, she wouldn’t have died in the street, she would have been dead in the house” according to testimony by Cruz. Cruz had been planning the murder for a week. (4)
Amanda Duran, 22, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 17, but it did not change her love of life nor her plans. Cruz was convicted of first degree murder and possession of a dangerous weapon in July, 2007. In August, Cruz was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. 
After an evening of drinking, Padilla and friends wanted to gain admission to the ‘members only’ club. (1) Alfred Rickabaugh, owner of the club, and Mignogna, the doorman, were arguing with them. Padilla went to his car and returned with a .45-caliber hand-gun. He opened fire on Rickabaugh and Mignogna, hitting Stephen Heiss, an innocent bystander. Heiss pushed his girlfriend to the ground, taking a direct shot to the chest. Heiss, Rickabaugh and Mignogna all died. Rickabaugh was shot several times in the back.
Alfred Mignogna, 61, was a well-liked former high school math teacher, father and grandfather. Fredrick Rickabaugh, 58, would have celebrated his 40th wedding anniversary with his wife, Janet, in October. Stephen Heiss, 28, a Marine who had served in Iraq, was a patron.
Judge Hiram Carpenter ruled the jury could not know Padilla was an illegal alien until the sentencing phase of the trial. Padilla was convicted of 3 counts of first-degree murder. After 4 hours of deliberation, the jury sentenced Padilla to death.
Miguel Padilla is in this country illegally since the age of nine. In 2004, Padilla was arrested for domestic violence and two firearms violations. He had several other priors and a parole violation. District Attorneys from two counties and the Altoona Police contacted ICE, but they failed to respond. (2) (3)
Jennifer Bower was buried on her 25th birthday. Friends gathered to “remember and celebrate” Jennifer’s life. “Infectious and outgoing”, Jennifer was studying community counseling at Marymount University. (3)
Corporal Mathews had returned from an 8 month tour of duty and was scheduled to leave the service in June. Brian’s mom noted Brian had donated his organs.” His heart was donated at the hospital. She said, “…it’s a good heart, a very good heart.” (4)
In February, Eduardo Morales-Sorianno, in the country illegally for a year, had been charged with 4 counts relating to drunken driving in Howard County. He refused a breathalyzer test which required by law a 120 day suspension of his driver’s license. (5) Morales-Sorianno was never prosecuted, nor was his license suspended.
On May 28, 2008, Judge Louis Becker III gave Morales-Soriano 10 years in prison and 5 years probation after he pleaded guilty to two counts of automobile manslaughter.(1) Morales-Soriano may be deported after he finishes his sentence. 
On the afternoon of February 19, 2008, the parents of 28 students gathered at Lakeview School to learn the fate of their children. Three of the families received the worst possible news. Their children were dead. Ten other children were injured, two in critical condition.
For the memorial service, 1400 people gathered in the gymnasium to say good-bye. Students gathered, holding hands and praying.
Franco is charged with 4 counts of vehicular homicide, 17 counts of criminal vehicular injury and identity theft after giving authorities a false name, Alianiss Nunez-Morales, and a false Social Security number. (1) Franco claimed someone else drove the van, yet she was extricated from behind the wheel of her vehicle. The judge granted a change of venue request for Franco.
Franco was charged in 1996 for not having a license. (2) In May, 2006, after driving a car into the front yard of a house without a license, she was ticketed and paid a $187.00. (2)
“I just can’t believe how cold and callous a person would be to know that they hit two human beings and just keep going regardless of his immigration status and just being a human being”, said Josh’s grandmother, Brenda Andujar in an interview. (2) Fear of deportation made Lopez-Canada flee the scene, he admitted to police. (4) Lopez-Canada pleaded guilty to two counts of leaving the scene of a accident involving death. Judge Mark Wolfe gave him the maximum sentence, 30 years. (3)
On September 21, 2006, Officer Rodney Johnson stopped a car driven by Quintero, for going 50 mph in a 30 mph zone. Driving without a license, Officer Johnson hand-cuffed Quintero, did a pat down search and placed him the rear seat of his patrol car. He was wearing layered clothing and Officer Johnson missed the 9mm pistol in Quintero’s waistband. Quintero managed to extract the gun and shoot Rodney Johnson multiple times in the head and back as he sat in the front seat. (3) Witnesses said Quintero shouted racial slurs and profanities. (4)
Quintero was sentenced to life in prison on May 20, 2008. Quintero had been arrested for priors. In 1998 he was given probation for ‘indecency with a minor’ and was deported in 1999. He had multiple DWIs.(3) He was issued an ID by the state of Texas following his re-entry to the U.S. (5)
Azmitia had been “making offensive remarks and gestures” to a 15 year old girl at the Sunrise Vista Executive Suites in Las Vegas, Nevada, where the Paytons and the Azmitias were neighbors, according to police. A group of men confronted Azmita. Azmitia returned to his apartment.
Troy heard a Azmitia’s pregnant wife scream and ran outside where Azmita fatally stabbed him. Covered in blood, Azmitia ran to a convenience store where guests of the motel surrounded the building. (1) Witness accounts of the crime were varied and it was unclear if Azmitia was acting in self-defense. Azmitia was not injured. (2)
Troy, 32, loved horses and he wanted his ashes spread over an area near Carson City where wild horses were said to roam. He left a wife and four children.
Azmitia was charged with suspicion of murder and use of a deadly weapon. He had a prior record of assault and domestic violence in Colorado and illegally re-entered the United States a month prior, after being deported. Judge Joseph Bonaventure sentenced Azmitia to 19 to 48 months in prison after refusing Amitia’s request for probation. Judge Bonaventure stated, “He has got to pay somewhat.” (2)
The girls were inseparable. Alison’s father, David, spoke of his daughter as having “a great sense of humor”, “always upbeat” and loving music and theatre. He said, “Her number one thing, however, was to hang out with Tessa”. Tessa’s mother, Collette, said she was as an “aspiring chef” who “loved to sing and surf”. (1)
On their way to a friend’s house, their car was stopped at a red light when, Ramos, intoxicated and going at least 65 mph, slammed into the back of their Plymouth Duster. Pinned in the wreckage, the girls had to be freed before treatment. Both wore seat belts. Both teens died. (1) (2)
Ramos pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 24 years in prison with deportation to follow. (3)
Ramos was convicted in Virginia Beach of public drunkenness in 2006, and of identity theft, public drunkenness, and a DUI in Chesapeake, in 2007. He was driving with a fake driver’s license and a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit. Officials in Chesapeake did not inform Customs Enforcement of his immigration status. (4) (5)
Holly had been living with Douglas, a Jamaican national. Douglas was accused of molesting a child. (1) An investigation was underway. Holly moved into her mother’s house.
Douglas went to the Monnett house, carrying a 12 gauge shotgun, “looking for revenge”, according to the Island police. (2) He shot Monnett’s son, Bruce, and his girlfriend, Sierra Flug. Both were critically wounded. Both survived.
Douglas attempted to get Holly to come out of a neighbor’s house by yelling and firing shots. Marjorie Monnett walked toward Douglas. Angry words were exchanged. Douglas fatally wounded Marjorie, firing one shot into her hip and two shots into her head after she collapsed.
Holly ran onto the street after seeing her mother wounded. Douglas shot her in the leg and in the head. She died next to her mother,
Douglas then turned the gun on himself, dying next to his fiancé.
Douglas had no priors after illegally entering the United States several years ago. No one knows his history in Jamaica. 
On July 28, 2007, Dani died from strangulation. According to statements made by the defendants, Gilberto Rivera-Gamboa, an illegal alien, was on top of tiny Dani on the floor of his apartment, attempting to rape her. Gilberto asked his cousin, Alejandro, to subdue her when she fought back. The 5’10”, 180 lb illegal alien, Alejandro Rivera-Gamboa, crushed her neck with his foot until she stopped moving. The sole of Alejandro’s bloody shoe matched an imprint on Dani’s chest. (2)
The Rivera-Gamboas were apprehended and charged with Dani Countryman’s murder, with “attempted rape and sexual assault” charges added later. (3) (4)
Court records show Alejandro Rivera-Gamboa was in this country illegally, but no one “from the district attorney’s office to his probation officer” conveyed the information to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Rivera-Gamboa was arrested twice in 2006 for DUI. Pleading guilty in November, 2006, he signed a petition confirming he was not a U.S. citizen. Nine months after Rivera-Gamboa’s second DUI, Alejandro murdered Dani Countryman. (5)

The suspect’s car and other evidence connected Armando Garcia to the killing of Deputy March. Garcia, a convicted drug dealer who had been deported twice and who was wanted for two attempted murders, fled to Mexico within hours of killing Deputy March. Garcia admitted killing Deputy March to a number of acquaintances. He had previously vowed to kill any police officer who tried to arrest him.
In a written plea agreement initialed and signed by Garcia, the defendant plead guilty to second-degree murder and admitted that it was an intentional killing of a peace officer performing his duties, and that the defendant used a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol to commit the crime. (2)
