Funeral processions held for two martyrs of illegal demos Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN - Funeral processions for martyrs Sane’ Jalleh and Mohammad Mokhtari, who died as a result of injuries received during the illegal demonstrations in central Tehran on Monday, were held in the Iranian capital on Wednesday.

Thousands of people, including several senior Iranian officials, attended the funeral processions.

According to witnesses, Jalleh, Mokhtari, and two other people were shot by rioters during the unrest on Monday. Jalleh succumbed to his injuries on the same day, and Mokhtari died on Tuesday.

A statement was read out at the end of Jalleh’s funeral procession in which the students harshly criticized the organizers of the protests.

A large crowd of seminary students and students of the Art University staged sit-ins in Ark Square in front of Tehran’s Justice Administration building and called for the prosecution of the leaders of the opposition.

Judiciary pledges to put leaders of sedition on trial

National Prosecutor General Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei has said that the opposition leaders will certainly stand trial in the future, but added that arresting them at this juncture would not be in the interests of the Islamic system.

Now it is not politically expedient to arrest the “leaders of sedition” because they would become heroes, but they will certainly pay for their criminal actions, Mohseni-Ejei told reporters on Wednesday.

“They have insisted on (continuing) their criminal and illegal actions, even after conscientious figures advised and warned them about their actions, so they should await punishment,” the prosecutor general said.

The main elements behind the February 14 incidents will face punishment because they provoked a riot and unrest by calling on the people to take to the streets, he added.

Mohseni-Ejei also announced that most of the people who were arrested during the protests have been released, but those protesters who have committed crimes are still in detention.

Anti-government protesters took to the streets in Tehran on Monday and clashed with security forces who tried to disperse them. Two people were killed and dozens were injured in the clashes.

The incidents greatly angered parliamentarians, who called on the Judiciary to arrest and execute the opposition leaders for their political crimes.
