Iraq coach resigns after death threats Soccer Notebook

Iraq's national soccer coach has quit his post after receiving death threats against him and his family.
Akram Ahmed Salman submitted his resignation Friday to the secretary general of the Iraqi Football Federation, Ahmed Abbas, and left the capital.
"He resigned due to a threat he received to quit training the Iraqi soccer team," said Abbas, adding that Salman was told, "`We know you, your family members and your address. Quit training the Iraqi soccer team otherwise you'll all be eliminated.'"
Earlier this month, gunmen kidnapped the chairman of Iraq's Olympic Committee and at least 30 other officials, including the presidents of the tae kwon do and boxing federations.
Prior to the abductions, Iraq's national wrestling coach, a Sunni, was killed in a Shiite district of Baghdad.
HOST COACH: Former Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has signed a four-year deal to lead 2010 World Cup host South Africa.
The 63-year-old Parreira led Brazil to the 1994 World Cup title and coached Brazil at this year's World Cup.
REAL LOSS: Roberto Carlos could be leaving Real Madrid after 10 years at the club.
The 33-year-old defender, who has 11 months left on his contract, is said to have accepted a three-year deal worth $19.2 million (all figures U.S.) from Turkey's Fenerbahce, according to sports daily Marca.
MAN-U BOUND: Villarreal midfielder Marcos Senna is close to joining Manchester United for a fee of about $12.75 million, according to news reports.
The Brazilian-born Senna, who appeared for Spain in the World Cup after obtaining dual citizenship, is said to have agreed to terms with United.
OPENING SALVO: Celtic opened the defence of its Scottish Premier League title yesterday with a 4-1 win over Kilmarnock.
Maciej Zurawski, who scored two goals, got the first of the league's new season in the 25th minute and added Celtic's fourth in the 90th.
