Israel is monitoring two Iranian warships about to pass through the Suez Canal for Syria and warn they might act. Israeli's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman says that "Israel cannot ignore these provocations," according to ynetnews.com. Lieberman added that the warships was "a provocation that proves Iran's nerve and self-esteem is growing from day to day." Iran announced plans to deploy warships near Israel and dock at a Syrian port for a year, IsraelNationalNews.com reports. A senior Israeli official tells the site that "Israel will know how to deal with it."

I don't think the Iranians would concur with your metaphor, but the dog aspect of it they would like, as in their culture, being referred to as a 'dog' is a low insult. Overall though, I would say brinkmanship like this is dangerous and will send oil prices up as an unwelcome side effect. I just hope people keep a cool head on this one. This particular frigate is not exactly a cutting edge warship. The ships are a MK-5 frigate and a supply vessel. They are said by Iran to be full of cadets going to train in the Red Sea area to train to defend "the country's cargo ships and oil tankers" against the threat of Somali pirates. The Suez Canal is only closed if there is an active war, and there is no legal standing to deny these ships passage. Thus probably in Israel's best interest not to strike out at it while it is vulnerable during passage, or even on it's final leg to Syria.

It would be a sticky situation at best for the U.S. to concur that the movement of this light frigate made in the late is a major provocation. After all, Mainland China has been on our but for years claiming our use of waters near them are territorial violations. If we backed a gambit to move on this warship and it's tender, the Chinese would seize on that as justification to act against us the next time our Navy sent ships through international waters they claim as theirs. There is nothing simple about this. I would imagine the U.S. has communicated to the Israelis to cool their heels on this one.

I don't agree. The Israelis never do anything like that by accident. The only thing that didn't go as planned was the ship did not sink killing all hands.
