WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama recognized a former president, a basketball legend and a civil rights hero Tuesday among the 15 recipients of the Medal of Freedom. During a ceremony at the White House, Obama said the recipients represent, "the best of who we are and who we aspire to be." The Medal of Freedom is the nation's highest civilian honor, and is presented to people who have made important contributions to U.S. national security, world peace, culture or other significant public or private endeavors. Among the recipients honored Tuesday were former President George H.W. Bush, former basketball star Bill Russell, businessman Warren Buffett and civil rights activist Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga. Obama praised Bush for his more than 70 years of service to his country, saying his life is a testament to the belief that public service is a noble calling. "His humility and his decency reflects the very best of the American spirit," Obama said. The 2010 Medal of Freedom recipients were announced in November. Other winners include: — Angela Merkel, German Chancellor — John H. Adams, co-founder of Natural Resources Defense Council — Maya Angelou, poet and author — Jasper Johns, artist — Gerda Weissmann Klein, Holocaust survivor and author — Dr. Tom Little (posthumous), optometrist murdered on humanitarian mission in Afghanistan — Sylvia Mendez, civil rights activist of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent — Stan Musial, Hall of Fame baseball player — Bill Russell, professional basketball player and first African American to coach in the NBA — Jean Kennedy Smith, founder of VSA, a non-profit organization that promotes the artistic talents of people with disabilities — John J. Sweeney, President Emeritus of the AFL-CIO

For one thing, the bastard was in on the plot to kill JFK. The only thing that can be said about Poppy is that his son was a worse POUS than he ever could of been.
W's dad was OK in my book - maybe he had the Kennedy's killed. Don't know but other than that he was not that bad a president. He even followed the UN resolutions to the letter.

Heh, I went to war for him in Panama and saw that the thing they most cared about was banking records. I had gone back in to get a retirement and he changed my mind Sorry, I know a criminal operation when I see one. And I will not accept the moral equivalent of a mafia boss as my commander in chief. I have no use for the bastard.
I forgot about Panama. War crimes aplenty there. I take back my statement about Bush being OK. As a president he was not an extremist but overseas he was an imperialist bastard.

Yeah. I went down to the U.S. Southern Command with my unit to do pre-invasion duties. They were really hot for those records. They loaded anything to do with them up in steel conex containers and used cargo helicopters to carry them to a secluded island in the Pacific off shore from Panama. They also had official casualties, and people buried in hasty made temporary burial sites with them removed later when they had time to hide them better. This was one of the first wars where you took your life in your hands if you talked to the media at all without a military handler there watching. If they determined a dead person would be little missed, they kept the casualty count down by disappearing them. The whole thing stunk. It poisoned my attitude toward this crime family to the extreme. I just wish I could say more about Panama. Someday I probably will.
Noriega is still classified as a POW - allowed to wear his uniform in prison.

Not to mention they did remodeling and knocked walls down to give him a more comfortable living situation. So you know he had enough dirt on enough people for some leverage in how he was incarcerated. When they flew the elements of the 82nd Airborne back to Ft. Bragg, N.C. they dropped them on Normandy D.Z. and had them form up on colored markers on the low point of the drop zone and marched them up to the viewing area where the families were waiting. They did it to create media spectacle friendly to the invaders, and was just typical on how they did this cheesy illegal and pointless invasion.
Noriega was one of the 'hosts' of the Shah after he was deposed after leaving that country for medical treatment by the way. And of course there is the strange 'accidental' death of Omar Torrijos, leader of Panama just before Noriega. It was a U.S. Special Forces team that recovered the body and 'found' the crash site days after he died. Presumably after the site was 'sanitized' to remove anything that could embarrass anyone. Speculations on cause of crash Torrijos' death generated charges and speculation that he was the victim of an assassination plot. For instance, in pre-trial hearings in Miami in May 1991, Manuel Noriega's attorney, Frank Rubino, was quoted as saying "General Noriega has in his possession documents showing attempts to assassinate General Noriega and Mr. Torrijos by agencies of the United States."[4] Those documents were not allowed as evidence in trial, because the presiding judge agreed with the U.S. government's claim that their public mention would violate the Classified Information Procedures Act. More recently, former businessman John Perkins alleges in his book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, that Torrijos was assassinated by American interests, who had a bomb planted aboard his aircraft (by CIA organized operatives).[5] The alleged motive is that some American business leaders and politicians strongly opposed the negotiations between Torrijos and a group of Japanese businessmen led by Shigeo Nagano, who were promoting the idea of a new, larger, sea-level canal for Panama. Manuel Noriega, in America's Prisoner, claims that these negotiations had evoked an extremely unfavorable response from American circles.
