Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt last month, had given indications to her closest circle of political advisers prior to the shooting that if Sen. Jon Kyl (R) retired that she would make the race. "Prior to the tragedy, she had decided that if Kyl retired, she would run," said a source close to Giffords granted anonymity to speak candidly about private conversations. The source added that Giffords did not, at that time, expect Kyl to retire. But, retire he did this morning -- creating a potentially competitive open seat that both parties are likely to target. It's not clear whether Giffords remains interested in running or if she could, physically, meet the demands of a statewide campaign. But, Giffords' previously expressed interest in the contest coupled with her rapid recovery from the shooting creates at least the possibility that she could make the race, according to her allies. Assuming she could run, Giffords would be a formidable candidate not solely due to her hero status in the state -- and the nation -- but also because of her previously demonstrated fundraising capacity and skills on the stump. What remains to be seen is whether the idea of a Giffords' candidacy effectively freezes the Democratic field as people wait to see what she might do -- allowing her time to recover and fully consider the possibility of a bid. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, a former Arizona governor, is seen by many as the strongest potential candidate for the party. "We are not going to engage in speculation right now," said DHS spokesman Matt Chandler about the possibility of the Secretary running for Senate. "The Secretary looks forward to continuing to work the Senator Kyl over the next two years and wishes him the very best in his upcoming retirement." Other names mentioned for Democrats are former Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, former state party chairman Jim Pederson, U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke and former state Attorney General Terry Goddard. On the Republican side, Rep. Jeff Flake is widely expected to run and, in the early jockeying after Kyl's retirement, is seen as the frontrunner. But, others including former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords could have lost 10X the brains she did in the shooting (that was the Tea Party & Sarah Palin's fault) and still more than enough needed to be a Democrat senator. She's going to run, and win anyway. The same idiots that voted for Juan McAmnesty will vote for her.
The seat is hers for the taking should she decide to go for it. Godspeed.

I want her to run too. She is a special woman, one with the right stuff. She has regained her ability to speak and is showing grit and determination as she works a grueling scedule of rehabilitation. She would be a force of grace and civility in the Senate, and she is no liberal having been a Republican before switching to the Democratic Party. She probably switched because of the sick intolerence of moderation in beliefs and policy support in the GOP these days. It would be nice to see more like her get in the Senate that would broaden the base of the Republicans in terms of the political spectrum. It would do a great deal of good toward the end of strenthing the two party system. I also thing that if she can and wants to run, the seat is hers'.

Will the little girls that her abortion funding muders ever get a chance to run? Does it matter to you liberals? It wasn't right to shoot Giffords, but she is part of the problem in DC and in no way the solution.
Don't go for trying to browbeat me on the abortion thing Stone. You are not pro- life in my book as you support capital punishment, and I don't support abortion and am no conservative. Gabby is a conservative leaning Democrat who used to be a Rebubican. You are not talking about the late Congresswoman Bella Abzug here. You love to come out swinging with your favorite ax even when the newsmaker the thread about is still recoving from a near fatal injury. You don't need to probe to see if I'll go toe to toe with you on anything. Because you should know by now I am always happy to.
