A statement by the armed forces on Egyptian state TV says the military convened the supreme council of the armed forces "to safeguard people and protect their interest." If there was the wide spread support across the spectrum of American population for Obama's resignation that there is for Mubarak's, then I don't see he would have many choices. Egypt has many opposition parties that win seats in the legislature and there have been votes - rigged as they were. The legislature had limited powers under Mubarak's regime but it functioned. So the revolt in Egypt does not resemble the revolt in Iran at this point mostly because Sunni Egypt is not like Shi'ia Iran in terms of religion or banned parties. With that said, all revolutions can go bad. Washington was offered the title of president for life in the USA - imagine what we would look like as a nation if he was a lesser man and took the offer?
