Title: Bachmann drops plan to cut veterans benefits

Rep. Michele Bachmann backed off a plan on Friday to cut $4.5 billion in benefits to veterans, following strong opposition from several veterans groups.

The $4.5 billion proposed cut was one of dozens Bachmann suggested last month in a plan to slash $430 billion from the budget over five years. Those cuts included everything from replacing farm subsidies to privatizing the TSA, FAA and Amtrak.

But since Bachmann released her proposal, veterans groups have voiced the loudest objections, causing Bachmann to drop them from her budget-cutting plans.

“One point on my discussion list was a $4.5 billion proposal that would affect payments made to our veterans,” Bachmann said in a statement posted to her website. “That discussion point has received a lot of attention and I have decided to remove it from consideration. The problem of government spending must be solved, but not on the backs of our nation’s war heroes.”

it is wrong to steal from the productive to pay for the health care of the unproductive. Society is better off if those who can't pay for their own healthcare die, even if children die.

She listened to the veteran's position and dropped the issue. What's your point?

Everything should be on the table for consideration.

Now, I know I’m not going to change the minds of any of the True Believers…those who read all of Reverend Al’s sermons, and say things like, “You know, global warming can mean warmer OR colder, wetter OR drier, cloudier OR sunnier, windier OR calmer, …”. Can I get an ‘amen’??

Your comment 34 was off base.

You expect society to cough up the money to save your friend but you didn't pitch in yourself. I bet if you weren't expecting the government to do it then you and your friends and family would have helped out. But since the government has entrenched it in your head that they are the masters and the author of life and death. That you thought they would take care of it and they didn't and it is not the its purpose.

Your belief seems to be that we should have our money confiscated by the govt before we even get it. Then that money should be sent to some bureaucrat and that they should send it to some other bureaucrat and that they should then send it back to some bureaucrat in the state and that your friend should have to go fill out some papers and forms to try and get some help. I'm here to tell you that that is a stupid philosophy. Let the people keep the money that they fucking earn and their generosity will shine. But no you liberals wont allow that.

Not my friend, my friend's father in law.

Who said anything about society picking up the bill?

My friend took a 6-month unpaid leave of absence from her job to care for her father-in-law who lived 250 miles away in another state. After months of providing care 24/7, her sister-in-law, who lived 700 miles away in still another state, came to give her a break so she could go home for a couple of weeks.

My mother's 98 year old "roommate" in the nursing home has outlived her two children and one of her grandchildren. In fact, there several residents close to or over 100 in that facility and who have outlived some of their children.

We threw in the towel on keeping my mom out of a nursing home when Medicare cut the amount it would pay for in home nursing care at a time when her Parkinson's was becoming so debilitating that she required nearly round the clock care.

Your belief seems to be that we should have our money confiscated by the govt before we even get it.

According to Boortz, the guy who wrote the Fairax book, the money you pay in taxes isn't exactly yours, it is your tax burden that your employer assumes for you.

Every employee of any company involved in American commerce is also a provider of a service, and, as such, the employee incurs a tax liability as a result of his or her work. This tax liability is incorporated into what the employee charges the employer for their services, and is eventually incorporated into the final retail cost of the employer's product or service. Each employee is essentially a separate business entity providing a product, be it physical or mental labor, to the employer.

boortz.com/nuze/200509/09152005.html

So your taxes, just like corporate taxes, are passed on to the consumer.

There are bureaucrats in government and there are bureaucrats in the private sector - the most bureaucratic organizations I can think of are insurance providers.

In the article, Stateless in Somalia, and Loving It, Yumi Kim writes, Hence the jilib [clan] functions as "a safety net, venture capital, protection, and insurance" (Van Notten, 74: 2005).

Further, Independent extended families being the basic social and economic unit does have its weaknesses. While clansmen are under no obligation to share their wealth with other clans, they must share it to a significant extent within the clan. Van Notten notes this as a drawback and states that the "law makes clansmen somewhat a prisoner of their clan." Since individuals differ in their productivity, it is inevitable that some family members will benefit from more successful members. In addition, as a way of promoting internal cohesion, extended families may foment animosity against other families. Van Notten also writes that foreigners are not recognized under Somali law unless they marry into a clan or come under the protection of a Somali patron.

mises.org/daily/2066

The long and short of it seems to be that human beings have a lot to gain by joining together in groups, it plays a huge part in the ability of human beings to survive; no matter how the group is organized, there is a price the individual pays - a trade-off.

Let the people keep the money that they fucking earn and their generosity will shine.

Whose face is on the money you earn?

Stone's quote from Lucymom's post - "You don't have to steal money from someone working and give the stolen money to veterans to love them. Stealing is stealing and people are getting tired of the democrats stealing their money and calling it taxes."

I have him on bozo, so excuse my recycling the quote you took. People who go in the military make a real sacrifice. Even should you not go to war and get mental or physical damage, you fall behind the peers you left at home and who are availing themselves of opportunities giving them a leg up to those sacrificing their time and energy for their country in a job which could put them in harms way.

The VA budget is too small for the incredible influx of new combat veterans who have entered the system since the new wars. And many of them have severe physical and psychological injury from their duty.

Last year in fact, we lost more soldiers to suicide than we did to combat for the first time. Stone is wrong; the VA bill is payment rendered for debt owed.

We have an incredible influx of physical trauma and injury to the brain in many of the new vets, and anyone who begrudges the service of people who put their lives on the line for them are shallow and mean spirited.

I got a new dental bridge from the VA last year which cost 2700.00 and I am currently using the medical benefits With no co-pay until my income level recovers. Oregon has been particularly badly hurt by the economic crisis, and many of us vets here are hurting, not just me. And even factoring in the GI bill I used and other benefits, my service cost me more potential income than I made from serving in the U.S. Army.

Many of us never forget how to serve either. I volunteer as a White Bird Clinic front desk person, and at the Service Station near my place where I help run the programs there for the general homeless community.

I also work as a volunteer at the Major Tom Egan Warming Center which opens to give shelter to homeless at night during very cold nights.

I am sorry some in here are so shallow and mean spirited that they do not appreciate their armed forces. They are truly the sorriest lot of humanity in this country.

Don't feel too bad. I get the "you are liberal, thus a baby killer routine time to time too. Never mind that when my son was first detected by a pregnancy test my wife and I never for a moment though anything more than, 'well, now let's plan for this person on their way into our lives."

And I got the "you are doing this to get at me" from my conservative Mom when she found out I was marrying an African American woman, and it was she who proposed an abortion as she said," well, you know life is hell for those little latte colored kids in this country and you should have the mercy to prevent this."

Nope, she died on April's Fool day in 2002. Only some of us kids showed for the funeral, and none of her alleged friends did. Only people to show other than the kids that did show were her husband's family.

I had been banned from her home for a few years when she got cancer, as she said my high profile as a city tree activist and other things were a humiliation and bother she would never forgive me for. In fact, she never asked me not to come up anymore, she announced out of the blue she'd call the police if I did not leave and not come back.

When my sister let me know of her condition and I showed at her room at Sacred Heart, she said, "Who told you?" She called Dave to come because I was there and I was made very unwelcome. When I tried to hug her, she laid there like a block of ice. I was convinced that she regretted being too weak to make a fuss I bothered to show my love.

I never saw her alive again. A week before she died, she told this sister who had told me she wished she was there in bed with cancer instead of her. My sister was miffed, but it was in character, so it was water off a duck's back at that point.

She paid 15,000.00 for her funeral and trappings for burial including a tropical hardwood casket and zinc lined crypt, and she was buried in a choice spot on the hill of a fine cemetery. I hear it's a nice spot.

She left less money than that to any of us kids whom she always was angry at for not liking her violent alcoholic rages growing up.

I am sorry to say, I don't miss her. It would be nice if enough love were left I could do so.

I was banned from doing the oldest's duty of eulogizing her, a chore taken by my youngest brother. And I know the Filipino Priest who conducted the ceremony in highly accented English would have been a major alarm and annoyance to her.

I was glad Chris got the chance to speak at her funeral by the way. He died two years ago of spinal Meningitis, and his boss rented a large room for his wake and it was standing room only. He is missed by us surviving siblings greatly, and his volunteer work in kid's sports and the unselfish nature he showed his co-workers is an inspiration for me to emulate.

I never saw her alive again. A week before she died, she told this sister who had told me she wished she was there in bed with cancer instead of her. My sister was miffed, but it was in character, so it was water off a duck's back at that point.

After crap like that, any garbage some nut can dish out over the internet is insignificant.

If you were my son, I'd be proud of you.

How is your mom doing?

She's 90 on the 26th. She's wheelchair bound for the rest of her life now because the last time she "walked" she "froze" for that one Parkinson's moment and spiraled her tib at the ankle. She's too frail for the operation to correct it.

Thanks for asking.

Lost Dad in 1994. Still really miss him. Think of him every day. Feel badly that my younger kids didn't get to know him well.
