MEXICO CITY (AFP) – Mexico's state electricity company on Wednesday started supplying electricity to the US state of Texas, where demand shot up amid unusually cold temperatures and caused power outages.

Mexico's Federal Electricity Commission "was determined to support Texas with electrical energy faced with the problems the state is suffering due to climatological conditions," a statement said.

An energy transfer of 280 megawatts began at midday (1800 GMT) via the north Mexican border cities of Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa and Piedras Negras, it added.

Texas Governor Rick Perry said in a statement that power and emergency management experts were working with utility providers to ensure power was restored as quickly as possible.

"Until that happens, I urge businesses and residents to conserve electricity to minimize the impact of this event," Perry added.

An epic winter storm Wednesday buried more than a third of the United States in drifting snow, sleet and ice that brought air and road travel to a halt.

Snowstorms also paralyzed air transport, blocked operations in factories and caused schools to shut in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas.

Ciudad Juarez mayor Hector Murgia said the temperatures of around minus 13 degrees centigrade (8.6 Fahrenheit) were the lowest recorded in almost 50 years.

Pincy Gringos in Texas, can't figure out how to produce power?

What does anyone with half a brain expect when the tree hugging progressive useful idiots make it next to impossible to build power plants in the U.S.? Why would anyone consider building a new power plant when they know the Obamacrats are going to slap them with Cap & Tax on top of the already draconian government regulations, fees, taxes, etc.? We're already dependent on the jihaddi Middle East for our fossil fuels, thanks to the Libs. Now they're going to make us dependent on the southern coke cartels for electricity.

In any case, your statement was based on 'truthiness" not facts - there are no tree huggers out there restricting anything. Why do you right wingers invent these vast conspiracies of cliched groups of people that in your mind exist to thwart stuff?

Sunny Forecast for Power Plant Construction Sep 1, 2007 12:00 PM, By Stefanie Kure, Senior Associate Editor

Approximately 145 GW of new coal capacity is projected to be generated by 2030.

Much of the power plant construction will occur in the Rocky Mountain and Southwest market regions. Sugar Land, Texas-based Industrial Information Resources (IIR) reports that in 2009, the Rocky Mountain region — comprised of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming — will see the construction of 22 energy projects, totaling approximately $12 billion. During 2007, the states of Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, which make up the Southwest market region, are scheduled to begin an estimated $4 billion worth of capital spending in the alternative fuels industry.

Have you noticed that the right wing kooks tend to have these narratives where some form of "liberal activist" or another is always out organizing the right wing people and 'protesting' in front of powerplants?

It is like a paranoid delusion they have or something?

What I posted was just one article form 2007.

You can find google filled with results of new power plant construction. I found no groups actively stopping these constructions....

That's a myth. We get most of our oil from Mexico, Canada, Venezuela, Nigeria, and Saudi Arabia. We could replace our imports from Saudi Arabia through a combination of drilling in Alaska and buying more from Mexico and Canada.

The long-term answer is hydrogen fuel cells, which will be rolled out in Germany by Mercedes and Hawaii by GM in the next few years. Fuel cells could completely end our dependence on foreign oil in a couple of decades.

My point was the libs won't let drill ANWR either, or mine coal, or build nuclear/coal/oil/hydro/whatever power plants to burn it if we had it. And besides Canada, who else on your list is a friend of the U.S.?

During California's energy crisis the right was making the same argument. The truth then was there were plants sited and permitted, ready to go, and the power companies decided not to build because they didn't know how deregulation was going to work out.

No problem for the right, they just blamed the left for creating uncertainty (damn - I wish the right was so interested in creating warm, cozy economic certainty in my life) in writing California's deregulation law that the industry lobbied for and wrote.

Attitudes towards nuclear plants have changed dramatically - please keep up.

Private industry doesn't want to build nuclear power plants without government intervention in the form of money and guarantees.

Very true, leftist kooks halted energy progress in America in the 1970s.

Sweden, France and Switzerland generate almost zero pollution from electricity production because they use nuclear and hydro. 80% of our electricity comes from dirty coal and natural gas. Why? Because the looney left whipped up a frenzy against the nuclear industry in the late 70s and halted all progress. Now we're suppose to trust their judgment. No thanks.
