Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- Stinging tear gas was fired in the epicenter of Cairo's demonstrations where pandemonium sparked by violent clashes between pro- and anti-government forces reigned Wednesday. In a surreal scene resembling the movie "Ben Hur," supporters of embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak thundered through the crowds on horses and camels in central Tahrir Square. At least one man was pulled off his horse and beaten. Mubarak's announcement that he will not seek re-election had been expected to vacuum the passion out of Egypt's nine-day uprising. But the opposite rang true, at least in central Cairo. It remained unclear whether such confrontations were being repeated elsewhere. The sound of gunfire reverberated in Tahrir Square and people hurled verbal insults, Molotov cocktails, rocks and anything else they could find -- shards of metal, sticks, shoes -- at one another. Desperate for more ammunition, they dismantled sidewalks and picked up chunks of curb stones to throw. They beat each other in what rapidly spiraled into utter mayhem.

As As'ad Abukhalil prophetically said yesterday: The US is now arranging for a coup against the will of the Egyptian people. Now, we can watch the implementation of it live over the Internet. If such technology had existed in 1953, the coup in Iran, carried out by the US and the UK through Operation Ajax, might have failed. Interesting to see the US media coordination on it. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs refused to attribute the violence to Mubarak today, and, in an interview on Al Jazeera just now, former US Ambassador Nicholas Burns, currently associated with Harvard, said that he couldn't tell who was responsible for the violence from Boston. Everyone is singing from the same songbook, and conforming to the Israeli insistence that there should be no criticism of Mubarak.

with a mob on that building roof,....throwing flaming molotov cocktails onto the gyrating mob on the roof of the 8th story building.
One guy riding a horse fell behind the charge some distance,...the crowd simply knocked his ass off the horse and proceeded to beat the shit outta him.
He had a WTF look on his face as the mob wailed on him with their fists.
It was like a scene from 2001 were the apes fight each other around the mudhole,....except no Monolith in sight : )
