Title: NBC Global Warming Bullshit

Its the 2004-2005 hurricanes all over again. Remember the dire warnings after Katrina that the U.S. was in for more more and bigger hurricanes? We are repeating that news theme with the ongoing winter storms in the East.

I have written many times about the fact that the scientists who believe in global warming tend to be the ones who have not studied meteorology or related sciences. We had another of these interviews on NBC's "Today" show. Dr. Michio Kaku's educational qualifications (according to Wikipedia) are as follows:

Kaku graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University with a B.S. degree in 1968 and was first in his physics class. He attended the Berkeley Radiation Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley and received a Ph.D. in 1972...

I went on the read the rest of his resume and he is not published in the field of atmospheric science. Nevertheless, NBC put him on the air as an expert in the subject of why the East is having so much snow. What did he say?

First he told us the heavy snow was due to "global warming." Then, he corrected himself while answering the next question and said it was not global warming but "global swings" (whatever those are). He said there were [around the world] "droughts simultaneous with floods." He added, "All scientists believe the earth is heating up." "Last year was the hottest ever... get used to it, we are going to have more monster storms."

Where to start? This scientist does not believe the earth is (present tense) "heating up." It is warmer than it was 35 years ago but the warming has stopped. I discuss that topic in detail here. Briefly, here are temperatures for the last 35 years as complied by global warming advocates at the University of East Anglia in Great Britain:

The hottest year is 1998, 2010 isn't even close. The data shows (again present tense) the earth is not heating up at present, nor has it heated the last 14 years. If anything, temperatures are headed down. The more important metric, ocean heat content , is also trending down.

So, the basic premise of Dr. Kaku's position is incorrect.

As to "droughts occurring with floods," that is usually the case due to an atmospheric phenomena known as "teleconnections" which means that when (for example) an unusually strong low pressure center forms somewhere (and causes, say, floods), an unusually strong high pressure center (causing a drought) will form somewhere else.

There is zero evidence that the current heavy snow in the East is due to 'global warming.'

But, it is not just NBC. Dr. Roger Pielke, Sr. presents a similar analysis of CBS News' coverage of these same storms. CBS also ties the snows to global warming/climate change/climate swings or whatever this week's buzz phrase is. CBS's "expert" also does not have a background in atmospheric science. They quoted Jay Gullege at the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. According to his Pew biography,

Dr. Gulledge earned a PhD (1996) in biological sciences from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and M.S. (1991) and B.S. (1988) degrees in biology from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Dr. Pielke is both a meteorologist and climatologist. The conclusion of his piece reads,

With this information, claims such as made by CBS, and those who were interviewed, could be quickly confirmed or refuted.

It would be nice if the television media actually quoted someone who knows something about how the weather (which is what the Northeast storms are) actually works. (1 image)

ABC News: Record Cold Caused By Global Warming

So let's see. ABC/NBC are now lying. In cahoots with treehuggers.

But meteorologicalmusings is the truth?

Note how local weatherwo/men just don't get it.

Climatologists do.

So the new "normals" will be considerably warmer and wetter than the current set (which you can examine here on the NCDC site). As ClimateWire's Joey Peters explains, this is by no means an academic experiment:

With these changes comes a pronounced effect on the industries and organizations that rely on the normals...[F]or some businessmen, utility regulators, wildlife agencies and others, tinkering with the meaning of "normal" can mean big changes. They range from future sales and budgetary issues to difficulties with songbirds and trout.

So these numbers really do matter, in the very real world. While plenty of agents of disinformation continue to crow about the very recent cold and snow, the biggest businesses, utilities, and agencies have long since recognized and digested the fact that states and smaller regions are warming as well, and their important work depends on how much. They're anxiously awaiting the NDCD's new "normal" weather numbers, and aren't distracted by a short term blast of Arctic air. Link: www.good.is/post/what-s-n...out-to-officially-change/

The author of the article is a climatologist.

Good to see you admit that he knows what he is talking about and that AGW is horse shit.

There's not really much difference in backgrounds. The difference is meteorologists have to answer for their predictions; they don't have the luxury of just making shit up out of whole cloth.

O please.

consult a dictionary.

First line from Wikipedia:

Meteorology is the interdisciplinary scientific study of the atmosphere that focuses on weather processes and short term forecasting (in contrast with climatology).

I just got done watching another interview with Patrick Moore on Fox Business. He co-founded Greenpeace and left a couple of decades later because it was taken over by anti-capitalist radicals, who have little to no science education. Moore has a PhD in Ecology.

He unequivocally states that we do not have enough information to know what causes climate change. What he does know is that the climate has changed for millions of years before there were any humans. He also believes that a little warming is beneficial and certainly better than cooling, which would threaten the food supply.

Something I didn't know -- two new nuclear power plants will start construction in Georgia this year. They will go online by 2016. He also said it takes 8 years to get a plant operational under current regulations -- 4 years to plan and 4 years to construct. That's not bad, but China does it in 6 years.

He is a deep skeptic about "clean coal". He says that Germany is trying it and it's not working because there are few places to safely pump enormous amounts of CO2 into the ground, which might interfere with water supplies. He also doesn't believe that wind and solar power can supply us with all of the energy we need because of the variability of the sun and wind. What he advocates is that as our aging coal plants go offline at the end of the useful life, they should be replaced with nuclear plants. This realistically will take 30 to 50 years. At that time, 90% of the pollution we emit would be gone (assuming we also convert to plug-in electrics and fuel cells for transportation).

This is a guy we should be listening to. He's an environmentalist. He's a scientist. He's a realist. He doesn't advocate that we destroy the economy to placate some left-wing loons who hate capitalism.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. -- Winston Churchill

Climatology (from Greek º»¯¼±, klima, "region, zone"; and -»¿³¯±, -logia) is the study of climate, scientifically defined as weather conditions averaged over a period of time,[1] and is a branch of the atmospheric sciences. Basic knowledge of climate can be used within shorter term weather forecasting using analog techniques such as the El Niño - Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Northern Annualar Mode (NAM), the Arctic oscillation (AO), the Northern Pacific (NP) Index, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO). Climate models are used for a variety of purposes from study of the dynamics of the weather and climate system to projections of future climate.

I have written many times about the fact that the scientists who believe in global warming tend to be the ones who have not studied meteorology...

I have been around for a long time and the climate doom cult's preachers have been telling their scary stories for many decades. I have heard every kind of prediction from the earth will be a ball of ice to the earth will be a sun baked cinder. I am not certain what motivates these purveyors of doom. There seem to be some who do so for notoriety and profit, others are nothing more than paid political propagandists, and some, in a childish tantrum, just want the rest of humanity to know how much they despise them and consider them nothing more than yeast.
