I think part of the problem is the inability to hear dissent without that knee-jerk thing happening and assuming the dissenter is towing some imaginary party line. As an example, this morning I was told that I thought it was a good idea to nationalize the private sector, increase welfare benefits, and prop up government. I don't even know what propping up government means. I asked but got no answer.

You should bear in mind I have had a ton of experience with infighting as an activist in real life. I have a huge amount of experience with agreeing with people, and going round and round with them on a person to person level. It is easy to achieve agreement with me politically, but trust must always be earned. I disagree with sneakypete on a large number of issues, but I would trust my back to him in a firefight, both real and metaphorically. That's something you really don't seem to understand well. Special Forces has something not many military components have, which is peering. At the end of the Special Forces Qualification Course for example, we were given a form to write down those who are graduating whom we would not trust while doing what we do. They tally names, and if some names appear on too many forms, the Cadre and Instructors investigate. They know that some people are good at acting and put on a good face to them only their peers see through. Trust is huge when your team has a small number of people in it, and you are sneaking around an Unconventional Warfare Operational Area. Peering people out gets a butt load of criticism from outside the SOCOM community, but it is a tool that helps accomplish the mission and saves lives. I trust Pete. I may be wrong,but I suspect the tendency of both of those police states to either just take criminals out and shoot them in the head or cut their heads or other body parts like hands for thief's or sexual organs for rapists off with swords just MAY have something to do with that. Hell,we have people in this country serving more time for simple possession of drugs that some others serve for violent crimes like rape and murder. The money would be better spent on treatment or just giving the dedicated true addicts free drugs so they maintain or even check themselves off the planet if that is what the monster requires of them.
