Title: Defense spending not sacred to Tea Party

WASHINGTON — Back home, Tea Party supporters clamoring for the debt-ridden government to slash spending say nothing should be off limits. Tea Party-backed lawmakers echo that argument, and they’re not exempting the military’s multibillion-dollar budget in a time of war.

That demand is creating hard choices for the newest members of Congress, especially Republicans who owe their elections and solid House majority to the influential grass-roots movement. Cutting defense and canceling weapons could mean deep spending reductions and high marks from Tea Party supporters as the nation wrestles with a $1.3 trillion deficit. Yet it also could jeopardize thousands of jobs when unemployment is running high.

Proponents of the cuts could face criticism that they’re trying to weaken national security in a post- Sept. 11 world.

House Republican leaders specifically exempted defense, homeland security and veterans’ programs from spending cuts in their party’s “Pledge to America” campaign manifesto last fall. But the House’s new majority leader, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), has said defense programs could join others on the cutting board.

The defense budget is about $700 billion annually. Few in Congress have been willing to make cuts as U.S. troops fight in Afghanistan and finish the operation in Iraq.

The defense budget is about $700 billion annually.

An obscene and ridiculous amount.

Few in Congress have been willing to make cuts as U.S. troops fight in Afghanistan and finish the operation in Iraq.

So far, few in Congress have been willing to make cuts on anything.

Defense spending has to be cut, bases closed. Entitlement spending has to be cut as well.

Nobel prize winning economist Paul Krugman states that for the short term till the economy gets back on its feet the govt should spend more and start cutting the budget I presume when revenue goes up as the economy goes up. Also, tax the friggin richers already since the wealth transfer to the top 1% is at obscene level and easily classified as wealth via fraud.

Exactly what one would expect from a professor of Economics and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, who lists John Maynard Keynes as a major influence.

Who won the Nobel prize. Who would you listen to for economic advice? Todd Palin?

When the business community is not hiring and the American people with jobs are not spending out of fear or credit problems. Who will but stuff to get this consumer economy kick started?

The govt could be the one spending in the market so as to jump start the economy. Then when the business cycle kicks in we can cut spending and the deficit.

Why is that not logical?

GOOD.

Considering how many bases we have in foreign countries, for absolutely NO PURPOSE other than maintaining "empire," we have plenty of fat to cut off.

Oh, and we should also cut back on the cash we give to countries in "foreign aid," as well.

You socialists LOVE to spend money on the military- when your guy occupies the WH. But, being the hypocrites you are, you don't want to do when someone YOU don't support sits there.

Get it through your FAT HEAD: we're not just "bust," we're BANKRUPT. We don't HAVE any money to spend on the military, or foreign adventures into unwinnable wars.

Study your history.

ME: Thanks for admitting that you ARE trying to spin this (AZ shooting, and terrorism) onto Palin, and conservatives in general.

Cut the defense enough to send Lockheed, Boeing, Northrup Mitre down by 50% and I'll vote Tea Party next election.

No. I'm not a fan of the Palin's.

It's a logical fallacy in that it's incorrect reasoning in argumentation resulting in a misconception.

In order to spend, since we are already pretty much at our debt ceiling, we would have to print and inflate. The government then prints and inflates the amount of currency in circulation. That greater quantity of money then chases a quantity of goods and services that has not been increased.

In the example above, the government has not added to the quantity of available goods and services, it's simply made prices go up, further devalued the dollar and put every American citizen deeper into debt.

It would take a Keynesian to believe that going deeper into debt is the solution for too much debt. The solution is to STOP the massive deficit spending, make the necessary spending cuts, pay down the debt, slash government regulation on businesses and allow the market to work without government intervention.

Since this is basically what made America the most prosperous and richest nation on the planet, why is that not logical?

What about entitlements? Both will have to be cut.

Are you just against military spending, or entitlement spending also?

I will go with Dr Krugman's thesis seeing as he has a Nobel prize in economics over your thesis.

One economic genius after another, yet our nation and the world is in economic meltdown.

What should that tell us? Could the system be flawed? Does it even enter your mind that we could follow another course? Is no other course even worth considering?

Capitalism does not work. The system worked fine until the New Deal controls were lifted......

Wow. You have some serious thought process problems.

Capitalism is what made this country the richest and most prosperous country on the planet, EVER. The New Deal was/is a venture into socialism. It was/is destined to fail.

BTW, I've spent the morning on ancestry.com and was delighted to find ancestors that I had no idea about, who fought in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War.

So, on that note, I'll leave you with 5 final words...

Just wanted you to know...the 'system' I spoke of was Keynesian economics, not capitalism.

Thanks though, for showing me exactly who I was speaking with.

That's right - capitalism does not exist anywhere on earth as theorized. It's a fantasy system.
