Advance word on the album painted a somewhat inaccurate picture, however. Sheryl Crow's name was being tossed around as a strong influence. But there's nothing on Day that's as earthy or organic as Crow's work. Instead, this is more in the vein of Clarkson or Michelle Branch or Avril Lavigne: Pop songs draped in power chords and anthemic choruses. Kimball, who turns 16 this month, had a hand in writing every song (she plays guitar, too); she also collaborated with heavyweight songwriters such as Billy Mann and John Rich of country duo Big & Rich. Because of this, she's got a bit more credibility than other young singers who are simply mouthing words written by others.
