Company to stop making drug commonly used in executions

By Rob Stein

Washington Post Staff Writer

Saturday, January 22, 2011; 12:00 AM

The U.S. company that makes a drug most states use in lethal injection announced Friday that it would no longer produce the powerful anesthetic, a decision that throws capital punishment in the United States into disarray.

The decision by Hospira of Lake Forest., Ill., was prompted by demands from Italy, which does not have capital punishment, that no sodium thiopental - which the company had planned to make at its plant outside Milan - be used for executions, officials said.

"We determined we could not prevent the drug from being diverted for use in capital punishment," said Dan Rosenberg, a Hospira spokesman. He noted that the company never condoned the drug's use for lethal injection and had hoped to continue making it for medical use.

Hospira's move will force states and the federal government to look for alternatives to the drug, which could require lengthy approval processes and result in costly, long-running legal challenges.

The company had planned to shift production from a plant in North Carolina to a facility in Liscate, Italy. But after those plans became public, the Italian Parliament demanded the company ensure the drug would be used only for medical purposes.

Italy's corporate tax rate is not all that low.

The standard rate of Italy corporate tax (IRES) in 2010 is 27.5%%. In addition, local tax (IRAP) is imposed at a rate of 3.9%, bringing the effective tax rate to 31.4%.

Doesn't matter, it's lower than ours. Everybody's is.

Maybe its Italy's health care system.

Ever stop to think that it is only the people who have never had to live with socialized medicine,or that is the only system they know that are for it?

Then again, why ask. Asking you to stop and think is akin to asking a mule to tapdance.

That's not socialized medicine. It's an insurance program they paid into, and they get to choose what doctors and hospitals they go to.

So then you wouldn't object to a government insurance program available for purchase to every American?

Of course not. Not as long as they get to retain the right to go to the hospital of their choice and see the doctor of their choice.

Not to mention the undisputed right to refuse treatment.

Socialized medicine doesn't work that way, though.

The Veterans Administration hospitals are a perfect example of socialized medicine. Anybody that thinks socialized medicine is a good idea should be required to get ALL their medical treatment at a VA hospital for at least 2 or 3 years.

If that doesn't cure you of your love for socialized medicine, there is no hope for you.

One short example. A couple of years ago the VA wanted to amputate one of my legs due to infection I got from a botched operation at that very same hospital. They sewed me back up without reconnecting a big vein, and it killed the circulation in that leg. I told them I wanted a second opinion, and went to a outside doc that recommended varicose vein replacement surgery for me. By then the leg was so far gone (swollen to the point it burst in 3 places and was black and purple) the civilian doc was afraid to do the surgery because of the fear of spreading the infection,so I had to go to his office twice a week for a couple of months to get a pad impregnated with silver put over the leg and then wrapped with Ace bandages impregnated with a anti-biotic. It ended up costing me about 8 grand by the time it was over, but I still have both legs.

Now,neither the silver impregnated pads nor the varicose vein surgery were approved at the VA hospital,so they didn't even tell me such things were an option. They just wanted to amputate and give me a high-tech plastic leg. Which is insane when you consider the leg alone would cost a hell of a lot more than what I paid for the surgery outside, plus the cost of the amputation, hospital time, therapy, etc, etc, etc.

Socialized medicine is a "one size fits all" approach to medical care.

In England they were refusing heart bypass operations at one time to people who smoked or ate pork because their lifestyles contributed to their medical problems. Or at least that was the excuse used. The real reason is there wasn't enough money in the budget to provide bypass operations to everybody who needed them,so they practiced triage.

I have never been on a private insurance plan that allowed that. There were choices, but you have to pick from the insurance provider's stable of doctors and hospitals.

My ex-husband is in love with the VA and his VA doctor. They were able to get his diabetes under control for the first time - something the for profit, private providers were never able to do.

Now,neither the silver impregnated pads nor the varicose vein surgery were approved at the VA hospital,so they didn't even tell me such things were an option.

I'm sorry you had to go through that and certainly understand how that would sour you on the VA.

Trust me, the same thing happens in the private sector. My mother was told by her doctor that there was nothing that could be done for a condition she had. He said "I'm declaring you 100% disabled, go home". She ended up at Mayo clinic in Minnesota where they managed to clear up her condition in 3 weeks. Her private doctor in California said when he saw her again, "Some people believe in witch doctors, and some believe in institutions like Mayo. Its your ignorance the leads you to believe you got help". It turned out that the treatment she got in Minnesota was developed in a university medical center 5 miles down the road from her California doctor.

Socialized medicine is a "one size fits all" approach to medical care.

Socialized medicine and government health insurance are not the same thing. Swedes can go to any doctor or hospital in the country they wish. I believe the same is true in France. In Denmark one can choose a primary care doctor on a yearly basis and go to specialists that doctor works with at no cost or choose to see any doctor he wishes for any reason with 2/3 the cost paid by the government.

Single-payer national health insurance is a system in which a single public or quasi-public agency organizes health financing, but delivery of care remains largely private.

That's called a PPO. Most health plans are not PPOs. Most employers allow you to choose between a PPO and traditional insurance. Tradition insurance usually requires higher deductibles or copays, but that is what I have always chosen because I don't want restrictions on who I can see.
