AUSTIN, Texas (AP) The sentencing hearing of former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, convicted last year on charges of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering, has begun in an Austin courtroom. The former Houston-area congressman faces up to life in prison. His attorneys are asking for probation.
DeLay was in good spirits as he entered the courthouse but said very little to reporters before the hearing began.
The sentencing hearing is expected to last about two days. DeLay's trial took nearly a month.
DeLay has chosen Senior Judge Pat Priest to sentence him.
Up to nine witnesses are expected to testify on DeLay's behalf, including former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert.
DeLay was convicted for his part in a scheme to illegally funnel corporate money to Texas candidates in 2002.
