Bachmann says she's found $450 billion in budget cuts By Vicki Needham - 01/07/11 03:02 PM ET

As House Republicans seek upwards of $100 billion in spending cuts, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said Friday that her staff has found about $450 billion to slash from the federal budget — about half of all discretionary spending.

"My staff and I sat down, we've looked at the federal budget, and just our first swipe across the budget, so to speak, we've come up with about $450 billion worth of cuts,” she said on ABC’s "Top Line."

She didn't outline specific cuts but said each federal agency would see its budget trimmed.

"They aren't painless, they do require sacrifice, but it’s from every level; from Commerce to Agriculture to Defense, you name the area of the budget, we've gone in to look at it," she said. "Because I don't like the idea of just across-the-board cuts, because if there are people getting oxygen masks to stay alive, I don't want to cut that budget."

Discretionary spending makes up about one-third of the entire federal budget, slightly more than $1 trillion.

“But on the other hand, if there is money set aside for trips for bureaucrats to go and have a retreat somewhere, that's something that we can cut. So we're trying to be picking and choosing with priorities.”

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said Thursday that he still wants to cut about $60 billion in spending through fiscal year 2011 and potentially $100 billion through 2012.

She didn't outline specific cuts

What a surprise. But they're there, all right. Maybe someday she'll tell us what they are.

“Reagan nearly tripled the deficit in his eight years, and never made a realistic proposal for cutting it. As the biographer Lou Cannon noted, it was unfair for critics to say that Reagan was trying to balance the budget on the backs of the poor, since ‘he never seriously attempted to balance the budget at all.’ ” - Garry Wills

Just like the "weeper of the house" not being able to name just ONE federal agency/department that could be eliminated.

And here all along I thought Jorge Booosh was 'all hat and no cattle'...

Yeah, like do-nothing top-level, mid-level, junior-level bureaucratic necks throughout the US government aristocracy, necks on the chopping blocks.

I suspect they will just dismiss the CBO and say the budget is actually balanced.

Since January 3, 2011, Republicans have controlled the power of the purse.

The federal budget is always balanced by an act of Congress Conmen. It is performed on an annual basis and often because of the good deeds of the men voting for that same budget, they give themselves a salary increase. Life is good.

I have more than that:

1.) Eliminate the following departments: (Savings: $180B)
Agriculture
Commerce
Education
Energy (except the Nuclear Regulatory Commission)
Housing and Urban Development
Labor (except maybe OSHA)

2.)Replace Obamacare and Medicaid with mandatory Medical Savings Accounts. You save a minimum of 4% of your income and your employer provides a minimum of 4% match. ($150B estimate)

3.) Consolidate over 100 welfare programs into three programs: ($75B estimate)
A program that gives cash subsidies to the working poor
A program that gives cash subsidies to people who cannot work because of mental or physical disabilities
A program that provide cash subsidies to people who don't earn enough to buy health insurance at an 8% savings rate.

4.) Bring the troops home from Afghanistan, Iraq, Korea, Japan, and Europe ($200B estimate)

5.) Replace the corporate income tax, personal income tax, payroll tax and capital gains tax with a variable rate national sales tax. The budget impact is negligible, but this would save Americans $500 billion in annual tax compliance costs. It will also create the best place in world to invest, open new businesses, and hire people. We cannot balance the budget unless the economy grows faster than federal spending.

Total Annual Savings: $605B. That cuts the annual deficit in half. To balance the budget, we need to both grow the economy and means test Social Security and Medicare.

So why can't Bachmann do what you did? After all, she's in place to actually do something about it.

I don't understand what all this fuss is about. Not long after the election, Ste. Michelle - I call her Ste. because she performed a miracle in being appointed to a committee concerned with Intelligence - was interviewed by one of those nasty, biased liberal reporters - you know the ones real Americans are all fed up with - who tried to make her give away the secrets about what Congress was going to cut. (As if that reporter felt he had a right to ask questions of Saints!!!) Anyway, instead of playing his silly Gotcha!!! game, Ste. Michelle told him what they wouldn't cut which added up to about $450 billion.

So, this is old news to any one who paid attention in this last election cycle.

So why can't Bachmann do what you did?

Because she is a conservative from liberal Minnesota. She's still proposing $450 billion in cuts rather than the $100 billion or less than the GOP leadership will propose. She is courageous for doing so. But it's not enough.
