Thomas G. McInerney, a retired United States Air Force Lieutenant General, jumped into the fray, stating that the object was clearly a missile. On Fox News show, Hannity, the former commander of 11th Air Force in Alaska and pilot with more than 4,100 flying hours, including 407 combat missions during the Vietnam War, said “[he] does not agree with the assertion [that it was an aircraft] and that we should get a definitive answer.” “This is not an airplane because of the plume…Airplanes do not con from sea level to 5,000 feet like that,” the General added. ‘I spent 35 years flying fighters and I never saw an airplane con like that. That is a missile. It’s launched from a submarine and you can see it go through a correction course.” When Hannity asked if McInerney was 100% certain it was a missile, the General responded that he was “absolutely certain.” John Pike, a defence and aerospace expert who runs website GlobalSecurity.org, is convinced the phenomenon was a simple trick of the eye, according to the Daily Mail. “This thing is so obviously an airplane contrail… There’s a reason that they’re called rockets,” he told the news outfit. Mr. Pike strongly countered internet theories that it was an unannounced missile test, adding: “If it were secret, we’d do it at night in Alaska.” In comparing Mr. Pike’s opinion to that of military expert former General McInerney, there is little doubt that a missile was fired. But why the Pentagon would be unaware of such an event remains a mystery. Critics speculate that the Pentagon would not want to create a state of panic by admitting to the American public that China just demonstrated a show of force just off our shores and could destroy Los Angeles without warning. Such fears are not unfounded, given that President Obama was in tense economic negotiations with China at the time of the missile launch. During the G20 summit taking place at the time in which the missile was fired, tensions “had been high between some delegations over how to correct distortions in currency and trade,” the BBC reported. “Some fear the conflict, chiefly between China and the US, may threaten global growth.”
Amid speculation that the light show Californians saw back in November 2010 was in fact a missile fired from a Chinese submarine 35 miles off the California coast of Los Angeles, spokesmen for the Navy, Air Force, the Defense Department and North American Aerospace Defense Command have now all said they were in the dark about what the rocket-like object was. Experts had attempted to unravel the mystery of the ‘missile’ since it was spotted on Monday evening – but the Pentagon had kept unusually tight lipped over the incident.
