HONOLULU (Dow Jones)--The Obamas will have a low-key New Year's Eve in Hawaii with a family tradition: A talent show. The White House was mum on what talents might be on display, but a Time Magazine cover story from 2009 said First Lady Michelle Obama is known for hula-hooping skills. The same article suggests Barack Obama is known to croon when with the right crowd.
The First Family has been on the Hawaiian island of Oahu for more than a week, spending their time barbecuing with friends, snorkeling at the island's world-renowned reefs, and playing basketball and golf. According to the White House, they decided to extend their trip for a few days and will now return to Washington on Jan. 4.
The First Family's New Year's Eve will be slightly more tame than last year, when they went to see a 3-D version of Avatar, the visually-groundbreaking film by James Cameron.
In addition to playing sports and relaxing, the president has been using his down time to read. The books he has been reading are: "President Reagan: The Role of a Lifetime" by Lou Cannon; "The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet" by David Mitchell; and "Our Kind of Traitor" by John le Carre.
