Title: GOP Lawmakers Threaten To Repeal Net Neutrality

Less than an hour after the Federal Communications Commission approved net neutrality rules, Republican lawmakers began staking their claim in the next potential leg of the debate: repeal.

The first calls to roll back the FCC's new net neutrality order came Tuesday from the House's most senior Republicans: House GOP Leader John Boehner of Ohio and Whip Eric Cantor of Virginia, as well as the incoming leaders of the chamber's top tech and telecom committees.

The members each threatened to limit the agency's funds or restrict its jurisdiction in the aftermath of the FCC’s vote, with Boehner proclaiming the "new House majority will work to reverse this unnecessary and harmful federal government power grab next year."

Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), soon-to-be chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, later elaborated to reporters Tuesday afternoon that he plans to bring all five commissioners before the panel to discuss net neutrality at "the first hearing out of the box" next year. He even signaled the possibility that Republicans may pursue repeal through the Congressional Review Act — an avenue that allows members to reject agency rules without threat of filibuster, provided they can secure a majority support against net neutrality.

Joining Upton's calls for strict scrutiny and eventual repeal were Reps. Greg Walden (R-Ore.), Lee Terry (R-Neb.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.). Walden, who will soon lead the House's top tech subcommittee, stressed the need to rebuff any FCC "power grab that'd allow the commission to regulate" other areas of broadband. Blackburn also floated the possibility of blocking agency funds for use on net neutrality, adding: "You will see activism on each of these levels."

Congressional furor follows Tuesday’s 3-2, party-line vote on Genachowski's plan to adopt basic net neutrality protections for broadband networks. The order will prohibit Internet service providers such as AT&T, Verizon and Comcast from blocking access to lawful content and websites. It also prohibits traditional wired broadband providers from unreasonably discriminating against any traffic, though there will be no similar rule in place for wireless providers.

Following the vote, the chairman said he was ready to take on any criticism.

"We adopted today a strong and balanced order that has widespread support and that focuses on the importance of Internet freedom," he said. "It's a strong and balanced order and I look forward to speaking about it with anyone who is interested.”

The Internet has been a major success at changing our lives for the better -- creating new business models, new technologies, new jobs, new wealth...

So, of course the leftist SCUM now have to control it and ultimate destroy, just like they've done to all of the other businesses that have been forced to move overseas because of government taxes and regulations.

Revolution in their minds. The children start to march. Against the world in which they have to live. There's hatred in their hearts. They're tiered of being pushed around. And told just what to do. They'll fight the world until they've won. And freedom comes flowing through...

The Republicans want to allow service providers to limit/restrict traffic on their networks which competes with their own services (e.g. Skype, Vonage, Netflix, Hulu, etc.) while the Democrats want to force the Internet service providers to carry all traffic equally.

So how do we continue to have an open Internet by closing the pipes?

By removing government interference and allowing the free market to develop alternatives to any restrictions.

There is no law today preventing them from doing this. Do they do it? NO.

Why? Competition. This not the 1930s where you had one copper wire running to your house. Now you have Cable, Local Phone, and Power companies that can carry internet traffic, plus 4 major cellular carries, who are rolling out 4G networks that can compete with landlines, plus Clearwire, plus satellite providers.

This is just an excuse to enable the government to get their sticky fingers all over the most successful engine of economic growth over the last 3 decades. It needs to be stopped at all costs.

Not true, here's a compilation of stories of ISPs interfering with Skype:

http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=51186

And ISPs have already attacked Bittorrent file sharing networks. Numerous ISPs (Cox, Comcast to name a few) are imposing usage caps that will impact movie streaming services such as Netflix. And, in the wireless world providers routinely restrict access to services that they don't approve.

Some areas still lack competitive service offerings, in much of my region the only high-speed ISP offering is Comcast. Verizon has already slowed FiOS build-outs as has AT&T of their uVerse service. We were lucky enough to get FiOS in 2009, before then we could only get Comcast as we were too far from a PoP for DSL.

And 4G services from Clearwire are still severely limited, even in cities they claim to serve. WiMax and LTE services won't match the density of 3G service coverage for 3-5 years. Meanwhile, most wireless services have data caps.

This is just an excuse to enable the government to get their sticky fingers all over the most successful engine of economic growth over the last 3 decades. It needs to be stopped at all costs.

Fine, so you have no problem with service providers closing their networks and blocking or limiting competitive services, Fair enough. Meanwhile, expect to see more content providers transition over to services such as ESPN3 which are only available through ISPs that partner with ESPN to deliver content.

ISPs interfering with Skype:

I use Skype all of the time. It works great.

This is nothing more than an excuse to control the internet like they control the airwaves.

It must be stopped at all costs.

so your experience means that no ISPs are blocking or interfering with Skype and the reports of others should be dismissed?

You are smarter than this.
