Title: Webb: Look to Germany, Not China, for the Way to Recovery

If the United States wants to claw its way back to economic self-determination, it should look not at China for the route forward, but at Germany.

Such was the prescription issued Dec. 10 by U.S. Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.), speaking at the Arlington Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting.

Webb noted that Germany, while having a population just 8 percent of China’s, had a higher trade surplus, and is the world’s biggest exporter.

“They produce quality products that people want, they take care of their workforce - they are doing something right,” Webb said of the Germans, during a speech before about 320 Arlington business, political and civic leaders at the Sheraton National Hotel.

Webb’s politics long have been all but impossible to pigeon-hole, and in his speech there was something for everyone to cheer, or to criticize:

* He voiced support the recent tax deal between President Obama and the Republicans. “It’s going to put money directly into the hands of people who will spend it - it can recycle money in our economy, and get this country moving again,” he said. “I think everyone will benefit.”

* He criticized Obama for pandering too much to the left-leaning base of the Democratic Party, saying the president must work to take the country “where we need to be as Americans.”

* He reiterated his opposition to cap-and-trade energy legislation, pushing nuclear energy as a solution to the nation’s energy and economic security. “I still believe that’s a great way to go,” he said.

* He said the U.S. government needed to “hold onto our principles” when dealing with the Chinese government, but pressed for further engagement with the nations of East Asia and Southeast Asia. “We cannot afford to reduce our presence there, and we have so much to gain,” he said.

* He criticized Democratic leaders of the U.S. Senate for failing to focus on economic matters before tackling other issues. “It is no easier to understand it from the inside than it is from the outside,” he said of the Byzantine workings of congressional leadership.

Webb praised Arlington, a community where he at one time lived, and where his book-writing office has been located.

“This is a very special county. It’s blessed by people who have the right attitude toward preserving the quality of life,” he said.

Webb won a narrow victory over Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. George Allen in 2006. He has not publicly announced whether he plans to seek re-election.

His appearance at the Chamber’s 86th annual meeting pushed attendance to its highest point in at least a decade, Chamber president Rich Doud said.

Bullshit.

Obama's first all-by-his-lonesome budget, btw, calls for a $1.17 trillion deficit.

It’s going to put money directly into the hands of people who will spend it...

...at WallMart, on Chinese products. The tiny payroll tax cut and extension of unemployment insurance is not going to help the U.S. economy.

Economies grow through investment in technical innovation, investment in business innovation, and investment in productive capacity. You can't have innovation without eduction. The government monopoly schools are producing blithering idiots.

Education reform, tax reform, and regulatory reform -- that's what we need to focus on, but the politicians are too scared to challenge the special interests.

there is no such thing as reform.

we need to completely destroy our government and rebuild it on new lines.

I also favor moving the capitol of the U.S. to Kansas.

Actually, with video-conferencing, web portals and on-line document libraries, we don't need a capital. Force the politicians to work online from their own districts. No more cozy D.C. cocktail parties with the big lobbyists. Make them stay at home to deal with their constituents. That would change things very quickly.

Yes, distribute the agencies across the country to bust up the concentration of power in D.C.

excellent point

I told a congressional aide just the other day that there was no reason to send his master to D.C. for those very reasons.

The Germans have subsidized companies to reduce layoffs, many have argued for a similar approach here.

Voting does not produce change. Voting is a waste of time. A placebo.

Positive change means breaking up all the banks. Abolishing and delegalizing political parties.

The government won't need to subsidize businesses, because it won't have the money to do it. the businesses will have the money

I was watching Morning Joe today (yes I get up at about 4am PST). Andy Card (Bush's Chief of Staff) was making excuses for Bush's big spending. Joe Scarborough (a former GOP Congressman) laid into him like I've never seen a talk show host chastise a guest. It was magnificent. People are starting to get it. We have a long way to go, but in my 30 years of voting, I've never seen anything like we are seeing today. So, I am hopeful.

There is a lot of dispute on what has caused Germany to whether the recession better than most. The CONSERVATIVE government in Germany has cut spending, taxes, and regulations as well. The Obama administration publicly chastised them for not participating in the kind of "stimulus" spending that Obama and Gorden Brown embarked on.

A better approach is to eliminate subsidies, eliminate tax deductions, and lower tax rates. Why? Because we need innovation to compete, grow, and succeed. Large economies are too complex to be centrally managed. The edicts of a handful of bureaucrats cannot possibly produce the outcomes of hundreds of millions of people making billions of decisions every day.

Very good ideas, I wholeheartedly agree, but I don't see this happening anytime soon...to bad.

I'm not sure where you are getting your information, Germany's deficit has almost doubled in the last 2 year as a percentage of GDP thanks to stimulus spending and tax cuts. They are now talking about "future" spending cuts. They enacted $130 billion of spending and tax cuts in November of 2008 and January of 2009 to stimulate their economy (2.2% of GDP).

Germany's budget deficit, at 3.1% of GDP last year, is one of the lowest in the euro zone. But the shortfall is set to rise to around 5% this year, thanks largely to fiscal-stimulus measures passed after the collapse of Lehman Brothers. The stimulus spending, valued at nearly 2% of GDP this year, means German fiscal policy will still support the economic recovery in coming months, says Eckart Tuchtfeld, an economist at Commerzbank in Frankfurt. But the cuts now being prepared mean German fiscal policy will be less and less supportive from 2011, he says.

This is classic Keynesian economics.
