Elizabeth Edwards has died of cancer, NBC News has confirmed. She was 61. Gravely ill with cancer that no longer responded to treatment, Elizabeth Edwards was reportedly not in any pain and was surrounded by family and friends, including her estranged husband, at home in North Carolina. When rumors began to circulate that she had taken a turn for the worse, Edwards’ family announced Monday that her doctors had recommended against any additional treatment. “Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive,” said the statement her family provided to NBC News. “She is resting at home with family and friends.” John Edwards, from whom Elizabeth Edwards separated last year after he acknowledged fathering a child with a former aide to his unsuccessful vice presidential campaign, was with his wife and their three children: Cate, 28; Emma, 12; and Jack, 10.

I was reading about her yesterday, and how brave she was holding up for her family, I know she had to be afraid but she didn't show it, I can only pray that when my time comes to go, I do it with half as much dignity, grace, and courage as this lady. God Bless You, Elizabeth Edwards, RIP!
When first discovered, her tumor was 9 cm, giving her a very poor long-term diagnosis. Yet another sad reminder of the importance of early detection, regular mammographies or MRIs. Someday we'll put an end to a terrible disease that strikes one in eight women.
My Mom died of cancer 1 April 2002. She was in the middle of her third chemo session when the doctor came in her room in the hospital in Portland, OR and said, "Beverly, go home to Eugene." It was over. She and I did not get along. And as the oldest who with my sister Linda who she tried to punish for taking the role of calling bullshit on her alcoholism as we tried to shield our younger siblings from her angers and resentments, we were shunned and hated by her. Which meant she had deep love for us that no longer emminated from her in the right way. It took a long time to let go of my angers and to find love and to forgive her, and Linda too died the next year also from cancer. None of us get out of here alive. And we all have to realize that the key point to our collective purpose for being here is not ultimately to loathe and hate each other; but to find love and forgiveness. Even for ourselves; as none of us are perfect. And we all make mistakes and are human. We should honor her by remembering the spirit we all are supposed to have in this time of year and to take pause and to try to be a little kinder to one another, and to focus on remembering when lashing out at others, we too have the natural flaws of humanity and to not take ourselves too seriously. Attacking is easy. Hatred is an incredible intoxicant that helps us forget our own baggage. In honor of her and many people like this wonderful Mom, wife and citizen of this country we all love we should plant some seeds of hope and love. Even toward those we normally fight will. Cheers.

It took a long time to let go of my angers and to find love and to forgive her, and Linda too died the next year also from cancer. The opposite of love isn't hate, it is indifference. It took me a long time too. You are a wise guy in the best sense.
