Title: Christine O'Donnell had nearly $1 million left

Delaware Republican Christine O’Donnell criticized the national GOP for not spending money on her campaign, but the long-shot Senate nominee was sitting on a mountain of cash.

O’Donnell reported having $924,800 in the bank after the election was over, according to her post-general election campaign fundraising report, filed Thursday.

An underdog GOP nominee turned media darling of the 2010 election cycle, O’Donnell became an overnight sensation when she defeated moderate Rep. Mike Castle for the Republican nomination in September, and some of her outlandish ideas and surprising statements that she had made in the past were unearthed. Public polls showed Castle would have been a shoo-in in the race for that Senate seat, but O’Donnell lost the race to Chris Coons by 16 points on Nov. 2.

After winning the nomination, O’Donnell cried foul several times that national Republicans were not doing enough financially to support her candidacy. In the meantime, however, O’Donnell was raising loads of money on her own — more than $7.3 million over the course of her campaign. She also reported spending $6.1 million on her bid through the end of the reporting period on Nov. 22.

O’Donnell spokesman Matthew Moran said O’Donnell was advised by her attorney to reserve “several hundred thousand dollars” for after Election Day to use for legal challenges resulting from her campaign — such as a complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission filed by the state GOP during the primary and a criminal complaint filed with the U.S. attorney’s office in Delaware by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

The campaign was also holding on to money for “the inevitable FEC wrap-ups because we had so many small donors, etc.” that ongoing legal actions could drag on for “years,” Moran wrote in an e-mail to POLITICO. “Lastly, much of that money came in so late that we could not spend it effectively and would not recklessly put the campaign into debt ... obviously, all checks that came in dated after the election were returned by Friends of Christine O'Donnell.”

O’Donnell’s FEC report shows that $1,966 in contributions came in to her campaign after Election Day.

Moran argued that O’Donnell did “more than” its part for the “greater good” for Republicans this cycle because her candidacy diverted media attention from other GOP candidates who might not have stood up to intense scrutiny, had there been any to spare.

Despite being down by double-digits in most polls for the entirety of the general election campaign, O’Donnell insisted that she would have benefited from support from the national party — she even said that she could have won with enough backing from the state and national parties.

“The Democratic Senatorial Committee is running ads against me, the Democratic Party is running ads against me,” O’Donnell told Fox News in October. “The Republican Party on the state level or the national level — neither have come in to help me close the gap in the polls. And my opponent, there is so much to attack him on, but the NRSC refuses to play, and that baffles me.”

In the days immediately following the Sept. 14 primary, the NRSC transferred the maximum allowable donation of $42,000 to O’Donnell’s campaign, and Chairman John Cornyn pledged his full support for the Senate nominee in a statement. The NRSC did not make any independent expenditures on O’Donnell’s behalf — spending the committee typically only commits to competitive races.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee declined to comment.

This is not the first time O’Donnell’s campaign finance practices have come under fire. Her 2008 Senate campaign manager, Kristin Murray, blasted O’Donnell in a robocall just days before this year’s primary — accusing her of using campaign donations for “rent and personal expenses, while leaving her workers unpaid and piling up thousands in debt.”

O’Donnell also ended her 2008 campaign — her second of three bids for Delaware Senate so far — about $23,000 in debt. According to the campaign finance report from her 2010 race, O’Donnell’s campaign only currently carries about $2,700 in debt.

She can throw the cash in the air and shout unto the Lord to take from that which is airborne that he wishes and needs.

And then keep any that lands on the ground he didn't grab.

From what I've heard from Daffy Dame, this would be something quite within the perview of her belief system.
