Chief: 23 Students, Teacher Hostage at Wis. School (ongoing) MARINETTE, Wis. – An armed student burst into a high school classroom in eastern Wisconsin on Monday, taking more than 20 students and a teacher hostage, authorities said. A Marinette High School administrator called authorities after 3 p.m. to say a student had taken over a classroom, officials said. Police Chief Jeff Skorik said authorities had been able to communicate with the teacher inside the classroom. No injuries had been reported as of Monday evening and Skorik said no shots had been fired. Skorik said 23 students were being held hostage in the classroom along with the teacher. He said police know the identity of the suspect and have contacted that student's family. "We have no idea as far as motivations at this point," the chief said Monday evening. Choral teacher Bonita Weydt said she was talking with a teacher in another classroom after school, which lets out about 3:10 p.m., when principal Corry Lambie came in. "I said, `Corry, what's going on?' and he said, `Get out of the building,'" Weydt said. County emergency management director Eric Burmeister said parents were asked to gather at the county courthouse. Marinette is about 50 miles north of Green Bay and sits on the border with Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The high school has an annual enrollment of approximately 800 students, according to its website.

A hostage situation at Marinette High School is over. WBAY-TV ABC Marinette's police chief says all 23 students and a teacher were released unharmed Monday night. He would not discuss the male student who held them hostage since late in the school day Monday, saying more would come out at a news conference at 9:30 P.M. The news came shortly after five of the 23 student hostages were released. Chief Jeff Skorik said he didn't know why those five students were let go, but he called their release "good news." Chief Skorik said a male student with a handgun took a classroom hostage near the end of school, though authorities were not notified until 3:48 P.M. when an emergency call came from a school administrator, after other students had left. In an earlier news conference, the police chief said he didn't know what prompted the hostage situation or what the student's demands were. He said the student doesn't have any history with police. It also wasn't known whether the student was supposed to be in that classroom when this began. Investigators interviewed the parents of the student. Chief Skorik said earlier that despite reports on social media there are no injuries reported, and he doesn't believe any shots were fired. Marinette Health and Human Services has mental health counselors talking with the parents. Dozens of students and family members gathered at a hair salon near the school. They told us they were worried because they didn't know exactly what is going on and there are a lot of rumors. Chief: Student Hostage-Taker in Grave Condition The Associated Press Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010 Authorities say a 15-year-old boy who held 24 hostages in a Wisconsin classroom is in "grave condition." Marinette Police Chief Jeff Skorik said Tuesday the boy is at a Green Bay hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Skorik says the teen shot himself as police stormed a classroom at Marinette High School Monday night. Police say 23 students and one teacher held hostage by the boy since early Monday afternoon were not injured.
