Okay here we go again. Now that the 2010 elections are behind us, it’s time to start looking ahead to 2012. And so today we have former first lady Nancy Reagan announcing plans to invite Republican candidates to the first presidential debate. It’s to be held next spring at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California.

Setting up the first debate could have the net effect of forcing some would-be candidates who are sitting back and testing the political winds to go ahead and make a decision on whether they will run. We’re talking about you, Sarah Palin.

“Ronnie would be thrilled that the road to the White House will begin at his presidential library,” Mrs. Reagan said in a statement. “I look forward to welcoming and watching the top candidates debate the issues next spring.”

NBC News and Politico are to co-host the debate, which will be followed by a second debate at the Reagan library on the eve of Super Tuesday of 2012 when the Republican primary campaign will be on full boil.

Now that we have the first debate set, the big question will be: Who is going to attend?

Lots of names spring to mind — Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, maybe Palin, Newt Gingrich. Many Republicans have said they are considering a run to challenge President Obama in 2012. We’ll see some providing their final decision late this year or early next.

former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, South Dakota Sen. John Thune and Govs. Haley Barbour of Mississippi, Mitch Daniels of Indiana and Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota

Ron Paul, Romney, Pawlenty, and Santorum (all of whom are obviously running) will formally announce around that time next year, if not long after, which will put pressure on Daniels, Thune, and Huckabee to follow quickly and not cede any huge advantage in name recognition. Palin

I believe that it is quite appropriate to have the first GOP Presidential primary debate the Reagan library.

I don't think that Bobby Jindal, Paul Ryan, or Marco Rubio will run. They are young and have the next 20 years to make a name for themselves. Running in 2012 and losing will hurt their future.

There is a part of the GOP that worships the Bush family as a low budget version of the Kennedy's. There are others who despise them. If Jeb runs, he'll tear the GOP apart.

Rick Santorum has nothing other offer that other candidates are already offering.

Gary Johnson is a good guy, but he is going nowhere.

Right now, the race is between Romney, Palin and Gingrich. It's Romney's unless the various Tea Parties unite behind someone to challenge him. Right now that looks like Palin.

A lot can change in two years.

My guess is that Palin, after losing Iowa and New Hampshire drops out to plot a 3rd party/independent bid.

I don't see any way she is not on the ballot come November of 2012.

The first candidate that comes out and says Bush sux, moves to the top of my list.

I agree with you.

I've said that she will go independent for more than year. Romney is going to get the nomination and then the various Tea Parties will revolt. It will be 1992 all over again.

If she goes independent, I will support her. Not because she is the best, but because Romney is part of the problem. Same reason I voted for Ralph Nader, Bob Barr and Ross Perot. No more RINOs.

I will not support Romney, Huckleberry or Benito Giuliani. PERIOD.

Both Gingrich and Palin would hand Obama a second term. The question is, will Palin split the Republicans by going rogue if they reject her?
