WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon says it's trying to figure out whether a missile was launched off the coast of southern California and who might have launched it.

Spokesmen for the Navy, Air Force, Defense Department and North American Aerospace Defense Command say they are looking into a video posted on the website of Southern California television station KFMB.

The video appears to show a rocket or some other object shooting up into the sky and leaving a large contrail over the Pacific Ocean.

Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said Tuesday that officials can't confirm that there was a launch and if there was, by whom. He says officials are talking to the Air Force, Navy and NORAD as well as civilian authorities who control and monitor air space.

All they can do is play dumb,even though you can bet your bippy they know exactly who fired it and what it was.

With all the billions we spend on defense,how can the USN admit that a NK or Chinese sub got close enough to our coast to fire off a missile without us discovering them first?

Now that we know it was launched from offshore, I'm more convinced that it could be a bunch of college students or recent grads.

The ONE area where Obama has been more "free market" than his predecessors is in space. After the shuttle is done in a few weeks, the U.S. will have virtually no launch capabilities. Maybe Obama is not "free-market", he just wants us to turn our launch capability over to the Russians and Chinese.

I'll bet that there are entrepreneurs out there, right now, plotting to make money in space. Oh, the horror... the horror...

The fact that it is estimated it was fired from 35 miles off shore convinces me that it was not students,but either the NK or the Chinese.

35 miles off shore

If that's true then it is certainly the North Koreans. The Chinese are not going to do this. They have nothing to gain.

My first thought was the.

NK's because they have a total freaking loon for a leader,but since he hasn't claimed credit for it,and you KNOW that egotistical bastard would brag about it,I am now leaning towards the Chinese. They are MUCH more subtle and sophisticated than the NK's,and they ARE capable of doing something like this to send a "insiders message" to our government while taking care to not alarm the public. THEY understand that an enraged public can put pressure on US politicians and back them into a corner where they have to make a military and political public response.

There could be several reasons for the Chinese to do this,ranging from the Spratley Inslands to the US Pacific Fleet. China has wanted the US Navy out of Asia so they could be the dominant sea power,and this could be a message that we ain't the only ones that can wreck havoc in the homeland if push comes to shove.

At any rate,it is a private message between governments,and that pretty much rules out the NK's. Remember all the worldwide press they went after to publicize the missile they fired in the direction of Japan? Not one chance in hell of them passing up on a opportunity to do the same if they fired a missile near the shores of America.

The NK's range, IMHO, would be 35 miles off Yokohama Harbour at Sunrise. ;}

And, again IMHO, China considers the Bottom 99% of US to be serfs and future serfs.

Their message to the Bottom 99% would be 'we own you, work harder'. ;}

Why not? Our own political leadership thinks the same thing,so who can blame them?

But Doug Richardson, the editor of Jane’s Missiles and Rockets, examined the video for the Times of London and said he was left with little doubt.

"It’s a solid propellant missile," he told the Times. "You can tell from the efflux [smoke]."

Richardson said it could have been a ballistic missile launched from a submarine or an interceptor, the defensive anti-missile weapon used by Navy surface ships.

The Pentagon is still not sure what that was in the sky off the coast of California -- except that it was not a missile fired by the U.S. or some other country, reports CBS News Pentagon correspondent David Martin.

How many times have we heard a variation of that line:

'We don't know what it was, but we're sure it wasn't that.'

And that article's been changed. IT had the words 'sort of' taken out. ;}
