WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon says it's trying to figure out whether a missile was launched off the coast of southern California and who might have launched it.

Spokesmen for the Navy, Air Force, Defense Department and North American Aerospace Defense Command say they are looking into a video posted on the website of Southern California television station KFMB.

The video appears to show a rocket or some other object shooting up into the sky and leaving a large contrail over the Pacific Ocean.

Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said Tuesday that officials can't confirm that there was a launch and if there was, by whom. He says officials are talking to the Air Force, Navy and NORAD as well as civilian authorities who control and monitor air space.

Now that we know it was launched from offshore, I'm more convinced that it could be a bunch of college students or recent grads.

The ONE area where Obama has been more "free market" than his predecessors is in space. After the shuttle is done in a few weeks, the U.S. will have virtually no launch capabilities. Maybe Obama is not "free-market", he just wants us to turn our launch capability over to the Russians and Chinese.

I'll bet that there are entrepreneurs out there, right now, plotting to make money in space. Oh, the horror... the horror...

The fact that it is estimated it was fired from 35 miles off shore convinces me that it was not students, but either the NK or the Chinese.

35 miles off shore

If that's true then it is certainly the North Koreans. The Chinese are not going to do this. They have nothing to gain.

parkmcgraw wrote: As a point of conversation, I was briefly outside yesterday, looking at the sky and cloud cover not much before this event occurred, noticing Jupiter and that the aircraft over head in the sky at the time were not producing contrails of any lasting nature or great size.

As an avid observer of all things and former US Navy weapon systems technician and one that stayed close to the defense sector have witnessed firsthand Terrier, Minotaur, Atlas, Delta, Titan and other launches including last Friday's launch of the Delta II from Vandenberg and from what I can determine from the news video looks very much like a rocket or missile launch.

The news video, clearly showing where the launch vehicle lifted from the ocean surface much like a sea launch ICBM. After further examination of the video, can identify what looks to be a momentary vertical accent phase, normal to the ocean surface followed by a "role maneuver", suggesting a vertical launch orientation of the vehicle and not horizontal such as from a torpedo tube for a sub launched Tomahawk missile. Thus, producing a short and clean vertical accent, void of a departure angle relative to the water surface.

The vehicle, as seen in the video, leaves little doubt that the vehicle is travelling at velocities much greater than what a non hypersonic or supper sonic aircraft is capable of achieving. This is deduced from the size to the "gilt" of light, at minimum intensity, from what appears to be the rear of the craft relative to the size of the plum immediately aft of the craft.

Judging from the orientation of the exhaust plum, relative to the direction of the setting sun and position of shadow line along the length of the plume does not suggest that this light from the rear of the vehicle is a reflection from the sun. Instead, that this light is the product of a very energetic chemical reaction. The width of the plume, relative to the length of the plumes path and apparent velocity of the vehicle strongly suggest that the combustion rate is magnitudes greater than that of a jet aircraft.

Presuming no foreign entity is responsible for this event, looks similar to an SLICBM. But, should this event not be precipitated by the US Navy or some other US armed service, then this apparent missile launch does have me very concerned.

My background to make such statements and formulated opinions comes from my time as a former US Navy weapons technician and operator. A person that in the past, participated in exo atmospheric experiment on so called Star Wars experiments including being on VOX during missions involving the Space Shuttle, Barium release experiments, to having flown jet and prop aircraft, having found over 400 astronomical objects including all Messier objects by the time I was 18, taken hundreds of astronomical and atmospheric photos, some published in books and magazines and today a laser physicist and author of an IRAD study titled US Naval Weapons Analysis for Northrop Grumman, Directed Energy Systems. 11/9/2010 10:03:59 PM Recommended (8)

My first thought was the.

NK's because they have a total freaking loon for a leader, but since he hasn't claimed credit for it,and you KNOW that egotistical bastard would brag about it,I am now leaning towards the Chinese. They are MUCH more subtle and sophisticated than the NK's,and they ARE capable of doing something like this to send a "insiders message" to our government while taking care to not alarm the public. THEY understand that an enraged public can put pressure on US politicians and back them into a corner where they have to make a military and political public response.

There could be several reasons for the Chinese to do this, ranging from the Spratley Inslands to the US Pacific Fleet. China has wanted the US Navy out of Asia so they could be the dominant sea power, and this could be a message that we ain't the only ones that can wreck havoc in the homeland if push comes to shove.

At any rate,it is a private message between governments, and that pretty much rules out the NK's. Remember all the worldwide press they went after to publicize the missile they fired in the direction of Japan? Not one chance in hell of them passing up on a opportunity to do the same if they fired a missile near the shores of America.

Not to mention the fact they are getting tired of us demanding their raise the value of their money to help us balance our budget.

Or as far as that goes, they may want to send a message to the whole 1st World that they will NOT be bullied into following UN environmental and labor laws. If they can tug Uncle Sam's beard, what chance does Europe,Central America,South America,Africa, and Asia have against them?

According to officials, Bashir complaining that the US was ignoring India’s human rights issues in Kashmir and warned that adding India to the Security Council would have serious ramnifications in the region.

Britain, Russia and France have all expressed support for India taking a permanent seat, but China, a long-time ally of Pakistan, has appeared reluctant to make any such commitment.

Pakistan has designs on securing its own seat in the UN Security Council, but has since come out against the expansion, insisting permanent members wield disproportionate power."

The NK's range, IMHO, would be 35 miles off Yokohama Harbour at Sunrise. ;}

And, again IMHO, China considers the Bottom 99% of US to be serfs and future serfs.

Their message to the Bottom 99% would be 'we own you, work harder'. ;}

But Doug Richardson, the editor of Jane’s Missiles and Rockets, examined the video for the Times of London and said he was left with little doubt.

"It’s a solid propellant missile," he told the Times. "You can tell from the efflux [smoke]."

Richardson said it could have been a ballistic missile launched from a submarine or an interceptor, the defensive anti-missile weapon used by Navy surface ships.

They are saying what they are ordered to say.

One thing you can be sure of. It wasn't a "OOOPS!" moment from the US Navy. There would be way too many people involved in the firing for them to ever be able to cover something like that up.

"The wife of a well known author asked her husband who couldn't spell, punctuate, or write a grammatically correct sentence if he was embarrassed; he answered, "No, those things are for amateurs to worry about. I'm a professional"."

I got my Polysci degree in the early 1980s and had to do a whole lot of writing in school after getting out of the Army the first time in 1980, and it was pretty gruesome.

I always read a lot, got excellent grades and have always been a chronic book reader, but my spelling was horrible. We all have our Achilles heel, and that had been mine.

i started posting at the Well in 1995, and shortly after that the Time magazine politics board that had a good hit count from all over the country. It was posting that forced me to become competent in spelling.

Yesterday while sand child was whining to flame, I was posting here and two other forums. One tends to get in a hurry, but I was doing just fine.

His game yesterday was to flame, my tactic was to show he lives in a teapot on the stove with boiling water and steam he was calling it a hurricane - a tempest in a teapot.

He is amusing in that he loses sight of the fact I don't care what he pots in the ping box to insult. It does nothing to me, and makes him look like a sandbox grade infant.

Several at 4UM did it a long time, I ignored it, finally Christine told them to stop.

His immaturity and ignorance is not my problem. I would rather not let the bic flicking to flame bull shit even register and to just go on doing what I do.

If he can't figure out that my political skin is rhino thick after many years on forums almost as bad as this one, he better keep wasting his time carrying stone's water for him.

Whitesands has been a long time joke in many of these forums and gets shunned as a goober. so I'm actually not surprised he's so anxious for attention he would try to see if modeling a high school bully will affect a 56 year old man who has been in the u.s. Army nine years and spent more years than that working in the woods in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California.

This is a joke of a forum, and I don't believe anymore that Stone wants it to succeed. I learned the last of what I was wondering about yesterday, so I'll be seeing you at the nest.

I got my Polysci degree in the early 1980s and had to do a whole lot of writing in school after getting out of the Army the first time in 1980...

LOL.

So, what, you got a B.S. degree in B.S.?

Oh, that's right... In PolySci, there's no classes where you actually have to LEARN anything of value, so it'd be a B.A. in B.S.

LMAO.

Then you became a ground-pounder.

Maybe it's time to go back to school, and get a REAL degree.

You make yourself out to be some shit-hot intellectual, and the truth is that you've got the G.E.D. of higher education... I certainly understand now, why you show up in the battle-field of ideas, with a Swiss army knife and a loin- cloth.

LMFAO.

Bye, bozo.

Getting tired of the bozoed calcon following me around on the 'net, wanting to discuss "tossing salad." Sorry, you sick rump-ranger. NOT interested.

A B.S. in Political Science, why? I did the language and math prerequisites, it wasn't a B.A. I used the old G.I. education benefits as I enlisted in 1975 and qualified for them before they started cutting them.

I'm never trying to put on the dog, dude. I went to private school most of my school years at places that had 15-20 people in my grade over the years. I had to take Latin, had literature to read in English in the fifth grade I later saw used in the public high school I graduated from in the early 1970s.

My nick name in basic was "Mr. Specifics" for saying, "Specifically speaking...." to a Drill when trying to explain hypothermia to him and got cut off as drill like to do. I use big words; it's a character 'flaw' and cross I bear; what can I say? I'm just who I am.

Later my nickname in S.F. was 'Spock' because of the 25 dollar words I used. I wasn't trying to put on the dog then, or now. I write like I talk in real life.

Unless I'm dealing with someone who rates Army or Blue collar jargon to get a point across. There is no point it trying to pose as you are a 'genius' in forum, or try to act uppity.

No, I prefer the Democrat. Miller made a shambles of his campaign. He has not impressed anyone with his lack of aptitude for winning votes, I just reflect that. I don't have any use for the Tea Party in general either though. I belong to the Pacific Green Party.

I 'feel' that as this gambit to criticize writing that escalated with the problems I've been having with this used Hp keyboard I installed on this laptop is bull shit in action. I'm waiting on one being shipped and should get here any time. This one does multiple 's' a few other letters, and having to cut and paste to put in question marks and some numbers necessitating me to use 'iespell' and the IE browser and is a pain in the ass. And this is the only time since I started posting in 1995 and my spelling needed work I've heard such nonsense, and I've written many things not dealing with posting over the years. I've sold writing too.

Thus I pay this game here no mind as I know what flaming is and why it is done.

Think what you want about my writing aptitude; it is your problem, not mine.

I prefer Zippo lighters. It's an Army acculturation thing.

But you flame with butane if you wish too.

Did you leave your testicles hanging in the tree from which you fell?
