Moderate Dems Line Up in Opposition to Pelosi's Bid for Minority Leader

In the wake of Speaker Nancy Pelosi's stunning announcement on Friday that she will seek to remain as leader of the diminished House Democrats, moderate members of the party are beginning to line up in opposition.

Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., said he was "disappointed that Speaker Pelosi is going to seek the position of Minority Leader."

North Carolina Rep. Larry Kissell's office said he hopes Pelosi "will change her mind and step aside."

Rep. Dan Boren of Oklahoma told Fox News that voters sent a message Tuesday that they want the Democratic Party to move in a new direction.

"They want someone to lead the party who is going to be bipartisan," he said. "This is very disappointing for a lot of us in the center."

Rep. Heath Shuler, of North Carolina, has said he might challenge Pelosi because the party needs a more moderate leader.

They were among the many House Democrats whom Republicans criticized for their loyalty to the California liberal, who was a forceful though generally well-liked speaker.

But even some longtime supporters of Pelosi said she needed to step aside as the party leader.

"I voted for everything she asked me to vote for," said Rep. Albio Sires, D-N.J. "You know, sometimes in this business it's difficult to know when to move on."

"With all the losses that we had with governors and all the redistricting that's going to be done, we don't need the target," Sires said, referring to the once-a-decade House redistricting process about to begin nationwide.

Several Democratic lawmakers in conservative districts had vowed to oppose Pelosi as speaker, but some of them lost their re-election bids all the same, making her bid to stay on as leader all the more likely.

Pelosi, the first woman to lead the House of Representatives, said Friday that many colleagues urged her to seek the post of minority leader in the new Congress that convenes in January.

That will be the Democrats' top post, because Republicans, who grabbed more than 60 Democratic-held seats Tuesday, will elect the next speaker. It will be John Boehner of Ohio, who will swap titles with Pelosi if she succeeds in her bid.

Republicans piled up the biggest gains in the House in over 70 years, while the Democrats will preside over the lower chamber for the shortest period since the 1950s.

But that hasn't deterred Pelosi.

"We have no intention of allowing our great achievements to be rolled back," Pelosi, 70, said in a letter to her colleagues.

During her four years as Speaker, Pelosi used all her political muscle to enact contentious measures such as Obama's health care overhaul.

In a statement, White House spokesman Bill Burton said the president appreciates the work of Pelosi and the Democratic leadership team "who have been great partners in moving the country forward" and he looks forward to working with them.

A number of liberal Democrats, including three from California, have voiced their support for Pelosi. Rep. George Miller told the San Francisco Chronicle that Pelosi has been "attacked and vilified by the right wing because of her effectiveness."

Rep. Barbara Lee said Pelosi is the best person to lead Democrats "through this very challenging period."

And Rep. Anna Eshoo said Democrats need Pelosi "now more than ever."

Allies said Pelosi would not make the bid unless she felt she had the votes. Some cautioned, however, that House members vote by secret ballot when electing the leaders of their respective parties at the start of each new Congress. Pelosi's caucus is more heavily liberal now that many moderate Democrats lost on Tuesday.

Pelosi's bid presumably will keep her atop the Democratic caucus, which will number about 190 members next year. But it would mark a big drop from being speaker, which carries tremendous power to influence legislation and is second only to the vice president in the line of presidential succession.

If the DEMS reinstall Pelosi as their "leader" of the House minority, they (the DEMS) are fucking nuts and deserve the obvious fallout.

Are they the just plain stupid or what?

Geesh...

Never swear "allegiance" to anything other than the 'right to change your mind'!

The recent elections were a fluke.

Nothing more.

The President should keep doing what he has been doing.

The DNC house and Senate members should keep doing what they have done.

Nancy will make a great Minority leader.

One cannot be "civil" to those who refute proven facts, like 'Obama is a US Citizen' or 'there are no death panels.' One can ignore them, but if they attempt to control our discourse and elections, calling them out, loudly and with a verbal punch, is the only alternative.

When will the Dems realize that if 'Muricans' want 'moderate', they'll vote gop. ;}

Foreign Occupation Soldier Killed. Somewhere Or Other In Afghanistan ... A foreign servicemember died as a result of small-arms fire in southern Afghanistan .... hit a mine in the Qarabagh district, the Ministry of Interior said Friday. ...

But the batshitcrzylandsenator from the Great State of 'We want war now, Ft Sumter!!!' comes to the fore:

"Lindsay Graham,

who apparently has not received the memo that all modern wars are now waged in binary, and are won by those who can push the FX bid/ask the furthest and the fastest away from equilibrium,

spoke at the Halifax International Security Forum, giving a very distinct taste of what US foreign policy is about to look like: "Iran is a major threat to any conceivable world order" and that he sees an almost inevitable confrontation with Iran. As AP reports, the South Carolina Republican saw the United States going to war with the Islamic republic "not to just neutralize their nuclear program, but to sink their navy, destroy their air force and deliver a decisive blow to the Revolutionary Guard, in other words neuter that regime."

Because even people in minorities can be racist. Racism is a human condition not limited by race, condition, age, gender, social class or any other variable.

As usual, you have a hole in your logic the size of the chunk of flesh and bone a hollow point would remove from an exit wound on the back of your head.

That's not true. That's a Straw Man on your part. I do not write 'One cannot..' and you know it. 8D

"...thought that up all by yourself. Can't tell because you cut and paste so much."

Which completes the action; a Straw Man combined with an Ad Hominem attack.

Oh crap! Not this shit again.

Always and forever more for this Empire.

'Cause there's O So Much the imperial City doesn't want to talk about.

The Main problem now is how, since Viewers/Readers are dropping liike flies from MSM sources, 'actionable news' will be disseminated to the public8D:

"The “Copyleft” methods of the alternative media have also bewildered the establishment. The MSM has always seen news as a revenue source, a commodity, something to be guarded and caged. Look at Rupert Murdoch’s hasty bid to paywall his websites. The alternative media, in contrast, has treated news as a right first, and a revenue source second. The goal of web news is not necessarily to make money, its goal is to get the truth out as quickly as possible, to as many people as possible, as accurately as possible, and that is why we dominate over the MSM. We allow the sharing and re-sharing of our articles, analysis, and films. neithercorp.us/npress/?p=865

And these 'Bellicose Statements' can only be seen as 'Historical Archived Statements' showing the 'measured actions of a 'thoughtful empire'.

In other words, the avg Bottom 99%, will only understand seconds, maybe minutes before the actual bombs hit.

I can tell his writing style, why can't you?

One factor that does frighten some news readers when encountering the internet is its lack of ceilings and fences; its complete denial of the traditional boundaries and filters always present in the mainstream media. When it comes to information consumption, many Americans are agoraphobic; when exposed to wide open spaces, they panic. At the same time, many people find the unbridled flow of news on the internet liberating.

Some sources of web news, like most mainstream outlets, are not reliable, while others are fantastically precise. The internet forces you, the reader and researcher, to check the viability of the information you encounter. You are no longer a passive observer frying your synapses in front of a talking box, but a participant in the realm of news, seeking out and separating that which is factual, from that which is not. Web news users have to put individual effort into their learning, which is, frankly, the way it should be.
