Sen. Patty Murray has won a fourth term, riding a wave of strong Democratic support in King County to defeat Republican challenger Dino Rossi.

Rossi called Murray at about 6 p.m. to concede, according to Alex Glass, Murray's deputy campaign manager.

As of Thursday evening, Murray was leading Rossi by more than 45,000 votes, taking 51 percent to Rossi's 49 percent. That's up from a 14,000-vote lead on Election Day.

According to a Seattle Times analysis, Rossi would need to get about 54 percent of the estimated 591,000 uncounted ballots statewide to overcome Murray's lead.

But nearly 264,000 of those ballots are in King County. Murray's already commanding lead there has only expanded since Election Day. She took 68 percent of the 69,000 King County ballots counted Thursday.

The Rossi campaign had no immediate comment.

To overcome King County's heavy support for Murray, Rossi would have to take about two-thirds of the remaining ballots in the rest of the state. So far he's received 53.2 percent of those non-King County votes.

That makes Rossi's task virtually impossible, even though hundreds of thousands of ballots remain to be counted statewide.

Murray was with her family and unavailable for comment, a spokeswoman said. She was expected to hold a news conference later Thursday.

"Senator Murray had a strong showing on Tuesday night. She had a stronger showing yesterday and a stronger showing today. We feel very confident that she will be the winner of this race," said Murray spokeswoman Julie Edwards.

Murray's victory helps Democrats maintain a majority in the U.S. Senate in a year that saw many Democratic incumbents fall, and the Republicans seize control of the U.S. House.

It was the third statewide defeat for Rossi, who is a former state legislator and a real-estate investor from Sammamish.

Rossi lost the bitterly contested 2004 gubernatorial race to then-Attorney General Chris Gregoire, after two recounts and a failed lawsuit. He lost to Gregoire by a wider margin in 2008.

We need fiscally conservative and socially tolerant candidates here. Unfortunately, most people who vote in the GOP primaries are from rural areas and socially conservative. That torpedoes GOP candidates in state-wide elections. I predicted this from day one. Badeye vehemently disagreed, but he doesn't understand Washington State.

Here's what happened in Washington State this year:

1.) A citizens's initiative that requires a 2/3 vote of the legislature to approve of any tax increase passed by a huge majority. (We've passed this same thing in the past, but the politicians have found ways around it, so we passed it again).

2.) A citizens's initiative to roll back new sales taxes passed by a huge majority.

3.) A referendum from the government to implement an income tax on the "rich" (families making over $400K) was overwhelmingly rejected. We've rejected an income tax many times in the past, but the politicians keep bringing it back.

4.) Patty Murray was reelected.

Washington is not a "blue state". We are certainly not a "swing" state. Our initiative and referendum process has consistently voted in favor of spending limits and tax cuts (with 60% to 70% in favor) over the last 20+ years.

But people really dislike Republicans here, mostly because of social issues (Washington legalized abortion before Roe).

Dino Rossi is now a three time loser. I hope the brain dead GOP stops nominating him.

He lost by less than 1% of total votes cast. THAT undermines your first statement, jw.

I understand Washington State as well as anyone else. Its suffering from liberals that moved north from California over the years, ironically to escape the tax increases THEY voted THERE, and proceeded to vote for in Washington State.

Same for Oregon, btw. Look at the numbers - unemployment, and corporate bankruptcies specifically.

Yep, Rossi lost for a third time. But it was razor thin...so the rant about not nominating him doesn't actually appear to be based on reality, no offense.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, ran on 'abortion'. Thats a perception, based on history thats accurate, but not on 'today'.

But it was razor thin....

That is 100% incorrect. Washington has become much more conservative because of those Californians and others moving in.

When I moved to Washington the entire media, including both daily newspapers were left of center. Any Republicans that were in office where flaming liberals. There were no conservative voices anywhere.

Now, the Seattle area has three conservative talk radio stations. One of the liberal newspapers is gone. We've had a solid 20 year history of passing citizen initiatives to cut taxes, cut spending, and take power away from the legislature on economic matters. We have also rejected almost every referendum from the legislature to raise taxes. Most of these have passed by 60% to 70%.

When the first conservative radio station went on the air in 1992, the Seattle- area establishment thought the world was coming to an end.

46,000 votes is not razer thin in this state. Rossi lost by 133 votes in 2004. He never had any chance of winning. If the vote was close this year, King County would have found enough homeless people to cast ballots to steal the election, just like they did in 2004.

A couple of months ago you claimed Washington had 20% unemployment, when in fact we have 8% -- much better than the country overall. Why do you continue to spout off at the mouth on something that you don't know anything about?

Ah, check the numbers again, jw.

Its 100% accurate. Murray won by less than 1%.

Patty Murray: 943,607 51.26 %
Dino Rossi: 897,237 48.74 %

2.5%, not 1%

Point for Jwpegler.

Point for Jwpegler.

I've lived in Washington for 21 years. Badeye lives in Ohio. Why does he think he knows more about the state than I do??? My guess is that he's never even been here. He is so stubborn.

I don't. We just disagree.

GO, last I checked it was less than 1%. Fair enough, you say 2.5

No big deal.
