WASHINGTON (AP) -- A top House Republican who's been considering a possible bid for the White House is stepping down from the House GOP leadership team.
Indiana Republican Mike Pence says he's considering new opportunities to serve his state and the nation and might not be able to pledge to serve a whole term as GOP conference chair.
Pence is a darling of social conservatives and has made political trips to states such as Iowa that host early GOP presidential contests. He is also strongly in favor of tax cuts and a streamlined federal government.
Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas said he would seek the post.
