Title: The New York Times Has A New Unhappy Distinction

According to CNBC, the New York Times is now the smallest company in the S&P 500, clocking in with a $1.11 billion market cap.

Who just passed it?

Kodak. The old-style film company reported a narrower than expected loss, and now has a market cap of $1.19 billion.

Here's the New York Times business model in a nutshell:

Cut down 50,000 trees in Canada every day. Load the trees onto large trucks and burn a ton of gasoline taking them to the paper mill. Waste more energy turning the trees into paper. Load the paper onto more trucks and ship it to New York City. Brow beat a gaggle of reporters to get their stories in before the printing starts. Waste more energy printing the papers. Load the papers onto more trucks and deliver them to distribution points. Have kids on bicycles pick up the papers and ride around throwing them onto homeowners lawns.

Who would invest in this business model today??? It's ridiculous.

The print media (and the dinosaurs that inhabit it) will not last in any significant by the time the baby boomers die off.

In 5 years, tablets like the iPad will cost a couple of hundred dollars and have color screens that are as good in the sunlight as the Amazon Kindle (which is black and white).

Look what's happened to the music industry. When I was a kid I had to buy a whole album or CD to get the two or three songs I wanted. The record or CD had the brand label of the record company displayed prominently on the cover and the disk. Now I can buy the specific song I want on iTunes or MSN Music. I have no idea who the publisher was. The record companies have lost every bit of power they had, including their brand identity.

The print media is next.

Great looking device.

Check this out:

Microsoft scrapped this device last year before it hit the market. They've had huge leadership issues in their Devices and Entertainment group. X-Box has been widely successful, but their mobile story has been stalled for a long time because of leadership issues within the group. Even though they have created some great technology, they've been challenged in bringing it to market. IBM has the same issue 20 years ago.

One more point: The internet has already put a big hurt on newspapers, magazines and CDs. Mobile technology will kill them all off.

have you seen Ray Ozzie's open letter to Microsoft on his departure? He argued they aren't ready for the death of the PC.

Yes.

Disclosure: I worked at Microsoft for 8 years and then helped them start a joint venture, where I was a VP for 7 years. Now I'm on my own.

Ozzie is right. Microsoft is wedded to the PC like IBM was wedded to the mainframe in the 80s.

This is why Microsoft did not dominate the smart phone market and couldn't bring a tablet to market. Microsoft views mobile devices as "PC companions" rather than first class network devices. They are wrong.

There are a lot of scary smart people at Microsoft. Unfortunately, at Microsoft, you can have the greatest idea in the entire world, but if it doesn't include a way to drive Windows and/or Office revenue, you are toast.

This is why Apple and Google and kicking their ass.
