Via: Telegraph: The US is building an £8 billion super military base on the Pacific island of Guam in an attempt to contain China’s military build-up. The expansion will include a dock for a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, a missile defence system, live-fire training sites and the expansion of the island’s airbase. It will be the largest investment in a military base in the western Pacific since the Second World War, and the biggest spend on naval infrastructure in decades.

Hmmm. Perhaps this is more about Okinawa than anything else.
Obama's first all-by-his-lonesome budget, btw, calls for a $1.17 trillion deficit.
Because Japan, the Philippines, and others have kicked the U.S. out. "Super-bases" have no use in an era where our largest threat is terrorism. We need a nimble strike force -- on the ground and automated -- that can quickly take out enemy camps. Of course we need more a conventional deterrent as well, but insisting on maintaining our post-World War II posture is hurting us, not helping us.
Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) is afraid that the U.S. Territory of Guam is going to "tip over and capsize" due to overpopulation.

Beware of trying to refight the last - or current - war. Classic mistake as demonstrated throughout the last century in particular, and throughout history overall. China isn't producing vast amounts of war related material to fight terrorism.
