WASHINGTON – A Pentagon spokeswoman says recruiters have been told that they must accept gay applicants, following a federal court decision striking down the ban on gays serving openly in the military. Spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said Tuesday that top-level guidance has been issued to recruiting commands informing them that the military's "don't ask, don't tell" rule has been suspended for now. Recruiters also have been told to inform potential recruits that the moratorium could be reversed at any point. Last week, a federal judge ordered the military to stop enforcing the 1993 law banning openly gay service members. The Justice Department is appealing the decision and has asked for a temporary stay.

I don't see how recruiters will know to be honest, beyond a gay waltzing in and screaming 'I'm gay! I'm gay! I'm gay!'. Its been my experience only the insane do something along those lines. Giving them a M-16 or M-4 seems rather stupid...

Actually, homosexual folks have served in the U.S. Armed forces since the beginning of this country. All this does is prevent a person interested in signing up from being turned away by bigotry if this triviality becomes known to the recruiter. Being gay or lesbian has nothing to do with how good or bad a serviceman or woman a candidate will be. This discrimination should of been ended decades ago.
FM, 1. I served with gays. NO problems what so ever. 2. There isn't 'discrimination'. There is a lack of tolerance for 'screamers', those that feel dressing like Cher or Judy Garland is 'appropriate for all circumstances'. We both have know those types I suspect.

They already serve, Stone. And you are wrong, there is nothing about homosexual people that would justify such a dumb move as you hatefully propose. I also would say you are very much wrong too about the offspring thing. Many gay and lesbian people have kids, and if people were kept from having sex merely for being unable to bear young, no woman would be allowed to have sex after menopause, and any man who has had a bilateral orchiectomy due to testicular cancer would be allowed to as well.

I was in the Air Force 30 years ago. There was guy who was getting kicked out because he was gay. He got caught with his boyfriend in the barracks. Not too smart. While he was packing, I told him that I didn't agree with the decision. What did he do? He hit on me, right then and there. WTF????? I don't think that the government should discriminate against gays. I don't believe that the government has any business telling people who and who they can't marry. However, individuals have responsibilities too. A big part (but certianly not all) of the venom that gays attract is due to some gays who parade their sexuality around -- from showing up in speedos to the gay parade to hitting on any man who is friendly to them.

I have seen people thrown out for being gay and it pissed me off. one good friend of mine worked in the administration part of the battalion I was in and his superior stole his car keys, searched his car, found letters from his boyfriend, and they both were kicked out. He was a very competent, caring person who did his job well. I remember seeing him ... Tell you what I just can't talk about it and will leave it at that. It will forever affect how I feel about this and what I do about it, and I don't give a shit who likes that or not.
