The United States should borrow ideas from Communist East Germany to keep its borders secure, Alaska's Republican Senate candidate Joe Miller suggested at a town hall Sunday night. "The first thing that has to be done is secure the border," Miller said when asked about illegal immigration into the United States, Alaskan blogger Steve Aufrecht first reported. Miller continued, "East Germany was very, very able to reduce the flow. Now, obviously, other things were involved. We have the capacity to, as a great nation, secure the border. If East Germany could, we could." The Tea Party-backed candidate, who is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, explained that he once served at the Fulda Gap, a point on the former East-West German border. East Germany's border troops were given orders to shoot anyone trying to flee East Germany. Following the same town hall meeting, a reporter for the Alaska Dispatch was handcuffed and detained by private security guards working for Miller while trying to ask Miller a question.

Apparently the purpose of East German border security has eluded Mr. Miller.
Interesting to note Mexico believes this, and is erecting a wall on its SOUTHERN BORDER thats based upon the the old Berlin Wall.
Obama's first all-by-his-lonesome budget, btw, calls for a $1.17 trillion deficit.
Perhaps someone will explain to him the difference between keeping people in by force and fences and keeping them out. Although if we did have a government as oppressive and fascist as the Tea Fleas and neocons wanted, we would indeed need to have the INS worry about that. When I was a kid I used play at a section of the wall as our house we rented (My Step Dad was a Pan Am pilot) was very close to it. Someday I want to go back to see the Brandenburg Gate again with the statues on top finally facing the right way. It was an interesting city to live in. The German kids used to beat up on my brothers and me until to their horror they discovered they were wrong, and we were not Army brats as they had suspected. In fact, they took me along with them one day on their rounds to bust into those little mini cigarette vending machines they used to have there to make up for their error.

Mine the border, NOW. Again, I have to point out a simple problem with your solution. In East Germany it was completely legal to shoot people trying to escape. Since they died inside of E. Germany it was an internal matter. However, shooting people trying to get in would, at the least, cause an international incident since they'd be shot in Mexico, not here. Perhaps once you baggers take over you can get the law changed so border crossers can be machine-gunned down once they're in US territory. The problem with that is that your big financial backers like the US Chamber of Commerce, Koch Brothers, and other business's want the illegals here. It's quite a dilemma for you.

Part of being an effective communicator is knowing what examples you use invoke the wrong imagery if cited. If this was the best he could do to come up with an example of a model to follow for border security, he sure doesn't have a clue about how to invoke trust in him as a potential leader. I lived in Berlin in the early Sixties and listening to the lastest about the most recent brave people trying to escape the tyranny of the Communist Satellite government you admire was local news.
