First lady Michelle Obama appears to have violated Illinois law -- when she engaged in political discussion at a polling place! The drama began after Mrs. Obama stopped off at the Martin Luther King Center on the south side of Chicago to cast an early vote. After finishing at the machine, Obama went back to the desk and handed in her voting key. She let voters including electrician Dennis Campbell, 56, take some photos. "She was telling me how important it was to vote to keep her husband's agenda going," Campbell said. According to a pool reporter from the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES at the scene, the conversation took place IN the voting center not far from the booths. Illinois state law -- Sec. 17-29 (a) -- states: "No judge of election, pollwatcher, or other person shall, at any primary or election, do any electioneering or soliciting of votes or engage in any political discussion within any polling place, within 100 feet of any polling place." A top Ilinois State Board of Elections official tells the DRUDGE REPORT how Mrs. Obama may have simply been ignorant of the law and thus violated it unintentionally. "You kind of have to drop the standard for the first lady, right?" the official explained late Thursday. "I mean, she's pretty well liked and probably doesn't know what she's doing." WHITE HOUSE DEFENDS ELECTIONEERING When questioned about the brazen nature of Mrs. Obama's campaigning, press secretary Robert Gibbs defended the action. No surprise here. After all,she IS product of Affirmative Action,and she DID practice law in Illinois as a Dim in Chicago. It is obviously expecting too much out of her to think she knows the law. Technically she violated the law. But she is the protected class they won't do anything. People would say it is racist. PC
I used to be a Democratic Precinct Committee person here in Oregon. Essentially, one can run/apply to be a party's representative at any precinct polling place, and one thing you do is watch for violations like this alleged one mentioned in the story. What she did is very much in the parameters in normal human nature and I have seen and heard far worse things that if she had done would be the day's big story. I also used to run Democratic phone banks in Lane County and of course once I became a Pacific Green that all changed. I would say what I find most offensive is when a religious entity here in Oregon puts a huge sign at all their Churches which is tax free land owned by a tax exempt organization - supporting particular ballot measures. I have seen it happen enough at Baptist churches I fully support them losing their exemption. The one thing I do know about political efficacy though; politics is an emotionally charged aspect of human culture, and expecting people to act perfectly is as foolish as expecting basketball to have only the level of contact the rules envision as there being in the game. There is always going to be someone trying to stretch the envelope.
