West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin’s bid to use a little firepower to stoke his campaign got a big thumbs-down from the head of his party, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine.
Asked about Manchin’s latest ad, which has the governor using a hunting rifle to blast a mock version of the Democrats cap-and-trade climate bill, Kaine said, “I’m not wild about it.”
In the ad, Manchin promises that he will “take on Washington and the administration to get the federal government off of our backs and out of our wallets.” He also promises to repeal “the bad parts” of the Democrats’ health-care overhaul.
Speaking at a breakfast gathering of reporters sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, Kaine also chastised Manchin for attacking the health bill, which both of the state’s Democratic senators supported earlier this year. The bill, Kaine said, “will do more for West Virginia that probably any other state.”
Manchin is trying to distance himself from his fellow Democrats and prove his love of hunting and guns as he faces off against Republican John Raese in a close race for the Senate seat once occupied by the late Sen. Robert Byrd, who died in June.
West Virginia Republican Party Chairman Mike Stuart had a different critique of the ad, saying in a press release that Manchin should have been wearing the proper attire when shooting the gun. “Where was his blaze orange clothing, his ear protection, his eye protection?” Stuart said.
Kaine was impressed by one thing in the ad. “That is a very big gun,” he said.
