Transgender golfer sues LPGA in bid to join tour

(NewsCore) - A former male SWAT team member filed a lawsuit in California against the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) after the now transgender woman was denied in her efforts to join the women's golf tour, her lawyer said Wednesday.

Lana Lawless, the 2008 Women's Long Drive Association (LDA) champion, claims in her lawsuit that her civil rights have been violated by the LPGA. The LPGA rules state that no one can play on tour unless she was born female.

The LPGA has rejected Lawless' applications to enter qualifying events. Lawless is legally female after undergoing a sex change operation.

Lawless is also suing the LDA, which holds driving distance competitions. Lawless claims the LDA changed its rules to prevent her from entering future events after she won in 2008.

“California’s civil rights laws prevent discrimination against all minorities, including transgender persons. The LPGA and LDA operate a number of high profile qualifying events and tournaments in California which are highly lucrative to their sponsors," said Lawless' attorney, Christopher Dolan, in a statement.

Dolan said the goal of the lawsuit is to force the LPGA and LDA to end their discriminatory practices in order to continue running tournaments in California.

“I have traveled a long road to get to where I am now, a place where I always belonged as a strong, proud, capable woman. I am, in all respects, legally, and physically female. The State of California recognizes me as such and the LPGA should not be permitted to come into California and blatantly violate my rights. I just want to have the same opportunity to play professional golf as any other woman," Lawless said.

The CVS LPGA Challenge begins Thursday in Danville, Calif.

Actually, many transsexual women have not gone the full physical transformation due to medical reasons or age. Or they don't want to go the full route of creating a vagina out of their penis. Surgical technique today is really good.

in the case where they do, having a vaginoplasty these days creates female genitalia that is hard to distinguish from the norm, and still generates the requisite pleasure level with stimulation to achieve sexual orgasm.

So, your very biased and uninformed statement has no relation to fact. Besides, a judge is not supposed to insult a woman that way merely for being a woman.

I did some checking. In Oregon, a woman or man can get authorization from a qualified mental health provider to get hormones and to get the gender designator on their ID Card or License changed to their desired gender indicator. They can do this on their U.S. Passport too.

Upon having completed successful transgender surgery, Social Security will change the record of gender, birth records can be made to reflect true gender v. birth gender, and the person in question has the full legal status of a man or woman regardless of what their bodies looked like at birth.

You wouldn't scream at an insult someone who discovered that another religion was more attenuated to them. If someone converted to Christianity for example, you would not call then a bizarre religious freak and assault them.

Therefore, it makes no sense to stigmatize, insult or assault someone who has known their entire live they identified with the other gender and goes through the long and thorough procedure to make sure this is so and is doing far better at functioning in society than they were in the wrong gender role.

If you look at research, Stone, people generally are happier, more productive and integrate into society better after gender reassignment.

You would not castigate someone born with a birth defect who gets surgical remedy as someone who goes against what your idea of the creator made when they created them as a human being, and it makes no sense to get pissed off at a law biding, productive member of society merely for wanting their body to better reflect their mind.

Actually Stone, this reflects the international standard. Even Iran and other countries recognize this treatment protocol. In fact, Iran is like many countries in Europe who provide sex change treatment free as part of normal health coverage for the indigent.

It is you who are horse and buggy whip level here. This won't change no matter who is in power, as to deny basic, humane treatment for an internationally recognized affliction would hurt U.S. standing for health care in the world.

Hey, if you can't get a clue, buy a vowel.

A man or a woman is a mind/body entity. When the body is in conflict with a lifelong self awareness with one's gender, helping these individuals assume the gender role that ends their torment and suffering with hormones and even surgery is a small price to pay for making someone's life whole for the first time.

Has anyone ever told you, that you are SERIOUSLY fucked up in the head?

This woman has a right to treatment for gender issues, and no one takes the steps necessary to correct this sort of situation lightly.

And she has a right as a woman to compete in whatever sport she wishes to.

'And she has a right as a woman to compete in whatever sport she wishes to. '

You know...I have no problem with everything you posted BEFORE this line.

Sorry, FM, thats pure unadulterate Bullshit.

If he wants to dress up like a woman, fine. If he wants to pay for self mutilation in a vain attempt to become a 'woman' again, fine.

But no, 'it' does not then have a 'Right' to compete in a tournament designed expressly for 'women'.

Let me know when you find this in our Constitution, specifically the bill of rights.

"He's a fucking pussy who can't compete with men, and so decides to beat up on women."

This is golf. It is a game of some endurance, but it is mostly about control and skill concerning motor coordination.

Not to mention, female hormones takes away muscle bulk. The only thing I can see that would be different is her pelvic girdle would be that of a man. And I've seen women with a small butt before being somewhat of a connoisseur of such things, so I question whether that would be an unfair element in this.

I still say, I don't care about a woman's journey in life, but how she conducts herself as she takes it.

"Cutting it off doesn't make him a her."

They don't 'cut it off. They construct a vagina, and the end result is indistinguishable from the real thing in terms of sexual function and appearance.

"Cutting it off doesn't make him a her."

This is true, she was a her all her live and when she couldn't stand the masquerade, and worrying about bigoted and insufferable idiots anymore, she got help to make her life bearable.

In fact as I said, some women can't undergo this radical a surgical change due to medical condition and feel much better with hormone treatment and living in the gender role they feel real in.

It isn't them with the toxic hangup and problem, it is folks like you who are not to be believed.

Actually it's not always that simple. Women produce testosterone too but sometimes when it decreases below certain levels problems occur and can be resolved if given as a supplement as a part of HRT and for other problems too.

If a guy's been castrated he will probably need some supplementation of it too as he won't be producing much of his own.

In normal female aging naturally occurring testosterone often is higher after 55 or menopause than that produced by a similiarly aged normal male.

mininggold  posted on  2010-10-15   13:10:21 ET  Reply   Trace   Private Reply

The hormone regime involves an antiandrogen to destroy testosterone, progesterone and estrogen in a higher than normal amount to further neutralize the testosterone.

The bilateral orchiectomy to remove the testicles removes the need for the antiandrogen. This is all generic information as I am no doctor and thus can only relate what I have read in a general fashion.

But suffice it to say, I know transgender women locally and in Portland, and they range from women who are no stronger than any other women, to a former pro football player who is a... very heavy duty woman; to say the least.

I live in a city that has quite the enclave of these folks, as we have strong laws protecting them in housing and employment.

This is true. and as someone who has worked for Harry and David seasonally taking orders from many older folk not into using the website to order, I have screwed up more than once calling a woman "sir" because her voice was deeper.

Women can have face hair, voice deepening and other unwelcome changed due to too much testosterone. But every human being needs at least some of this hormone to be healthy.
