Transgender golfer sues LPGA in bid to join tour

(NewsCore) - A former male SWAT team member filed a lawsuit in California against the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) after the now transgender woman was denied in her efforts to join the women's golf tour, her lawyer said Wednesday.

Lana Lawless, the 2008 Women's Long Drive Association (LDA) champion, claims in her lawsuit that her civil rights have been violated by the LPGA. The LPGA rules state that no one can play on tour unless she was born female.

The LPGA has rejected Lawless' applications to enter qualifying events. Lawless is legally female after undergoing a sex change operation.

Lawless is also suing the LDA, which holds driving distance competitions. Lawless claims the LDA changed its rules to prevent her from entering future events after she won in 2008.

“California’s civil rights laws prevent discrimination against all minorities, including transgender persons. The LPGA and LDA operate a number of high profile qualifying events and tournaments in California which are highly lucrative to their sponsors," said Lawless' attorney, Christopher Dolan, in a statement.

Dolan said the goal of the lawsuit is to force the LPGA and LDA to end their discriminatory practices in order to continue running tournaments in California.

“I have traveled a long road to get to where I am now, a place where I always belonged as a strong, proud, capable woman. I am, in all respects, legally, and physically female. The State of California recognizes me as such and the LPGA should not be permitted to come into California and blatantly violate my rights. I just want to have the same opportunity to play professional golf as any other woman," Lawless said.

The CVS LPGA Challenge begins Thursday in Danville, Calif.

She should be allowed to compete. It is wrong to discriminate against people if they change religions, discovering that another faith is a better fit. Transgendered people are folks who always knew they were a particular gender, and have the courage to escape from the trap their physical gender is.

It is no big thing to correct gender problems. In a Buddhist country like Thailand, people get sexual reassignment surgery in their twenties or early thirties, it's no big deal.

But in hate driven and repressive countries like the U.S., people go to their late forties, fifties or even later to change because the deception is driving them mad and they can't stand it any longer.

I am proud to say I would never discriminate against anyone for homosexuality or for being transgender. To me, the ones with the affliction are those who hate others for irrational reasons like this.

This is golf. It is a game of some endurance, but it is mostly about control and skill concerning motor coordination.

Not to mention, female hormones takes away muscle bulk. The only thing I can see that would be different is her pelvic girdle would be that of a man. And I've seen women with a small butt before being somewhat of a connoisseur of such things, so I question whether that would be an unfair element in this.

I still say, I don't care about a woman's journey in life, but how she conducts herself as she takes it.

Actually it's not always that simple. Women produce testosterone too but sometimes when it decreases below certain levels problems occur and can be resolved if given as a supplement as a part of HRT and for other problems too.

If a guy's been castrated he will probably need some supplementation of it too as he won't be producing much of his own.

In normal female aging naturally occurring testosterone often is higher after 55 or menopause than that produced by a similiarly aged normal male.

The hormone regime involves an antiandrogen to destroy testosterone, progesterone and estrogen in a higher than normal amount to further neutralize the testosterone.

The bilateral orchiectomy to remove the testicles removes the need for the antiandrogen. This is all generic information as I am no doctor and thus can only relate what I have read in a general fashion.

But suffice it to say, I know transgender women locally and in Portland, and they range from women who are no stronger than any other women, to a former pro football player who is a... very heavy duty woman; to say the least.

I live in a city that has quite the enclave of these folks, as we have strong laws protecting them in housing and employment.

You should talk. I've read the book, 'Going to Extremes.' If Alaska competed against Eugene, Oregon for the best and brightest of the bizarro set, you guys would win, hands down.

Oooooooo!!!!! Isn't that a book written by some leftwingnut? The whackjob that camped out next to the Palins? Creepy bastard in my opinion. Why would I even be interested?

"Why would I even be interested?"

Good point. But off hand I don't know any coloring books in your age level that would be applicable to use to make the same salient point as Joe McGinness' book.

I do paint, use pastels and actually have crayons to use in art projects.

So what? I also have a lot of skill with water color painting; but my product is good enough to sell.
