A driver talks on a mobile phone as he sits in traffic along a main road in central Beijing October 12, 2010. China, which overtook the United States as the world's largest auto market last year, has been a major bright spot for sales as the global industry struggles to recover from a steep downturn. But the market has been slowing since May as Beijing took measures to keep the economy from overheating. Industry observers expect the recent upturn in demand to extend into October and even into the winter months as many people would rush to buy cars, worrying that Beijing may scale back or even scrap its policy incentives in 2011. REUTERS/David Gray

LONDON, Oct. 12, 2010 (Reuters) — China has become the world's largest energy user, having overtaken the United States, the head of the International Energy Agency said on Tuesday.

"China is now the largest energy consumer by our definition," the executive director of the Paris-based IEA, Nobuo Tanaka, told an industry conference.

"Probably half of the oil demand increase comes from China. Nobody knows when it (will) slow down."

The IEA advises 28 developed countries. China is not a part of the IEA but the agency monitors the country as its oil demand can have a significant impact on prices.

Tanaka said Iraq, which has just revised up its estimates of proven oil reserves by 25 percent, could have a major influence on the oil market.

"Iraq can be a game changer. We need Iraq oil," Tanaka said.

Not all environmentalists carry weenies in their pants, why; at least half of us are women.

I am aware of a great deal of environmental activism in Asia which badly needs this feedback regarding bad development and the exploitation of that continents remaining plants and wildlife.

So I don't see your point. Unless you wish me to fill you in, which I would be glad to.

I doubt you are interested however.

Interestingly enough, I am working with SaveJapanDophins and Sea Shepard.

So, interestingly enough, that's what I am doing; a small part of the effort to save important life in the oceans. With part of the emphasis on what is happening in waters around Asia.

So taunt away, I am doing what I can to do my small part in this sort of advocacy. Another thing I do is ride bicycles. I have not bought petrol/gasoline for several months.

In fact, I'm giving my car away next month to a friend who needs it for a buck to avoid the gift tax. Which is what I paid for this Ford Windstar. Which is clean and runs well and is nicely tuned and has new tires.

I just find cars inconvenient and unnecessary.

Whales are also intelligent mammals, much like humans. I'm sure you are a specio-centric kind of guy; but I know whales and dolphins have language and culture, and rival us in brain development and mental ability.

There is zero difference between killing a cetacean and a hominid. Besides, if we can't save the integrity of life on this planet and do a better job protecting it, we can't untimately save our own species.

Actually, I have a very high respect for both whales and dolphins, and do know of the research related to both species, both whats publicly available, and whats classified (dolphins) via friends that worked with them.

Which is why I don't eat, or hunt, EITHER.

Where we disagree is the 'zero difference between killing a cetacean and a hominid'.

The whales wouldn't think like that if they had the chance. Something you enviroweenies aren't willing to admit, or even consider.

You must have forgotten that China's a dictatorship.

In China the stakes are higher and the Chinese make their dissatisfaction known none the less

In at least the third clash in as many weeks, 2,000 riot police fired tear gas and warning shots during a violent confrontation with anti-pollution protesters near an industrial plant in Quanzhou, Fujian Province.

The demonstrators destroyed cars, threw stones at police and took an official hostage last weekend in an attempt to sabotage a tannery and chemical plant that they blamed for a foul stench and high rates of cancer. Tensions have risen as the smell has worsened, locals said.

According to the local government, the "rioters" badly beat four chemical factory employees, the chief of the nearby Chengping village and at least one policeman during sporadic fighting over the past week.

"You don't know, maybe they 'think' they exist to feed Japanese..."

... Methylmercury, which dolphins are heavily contaminated with due to pollution from Japanese industry's pollution of the waters around Japan.

One of the saddest things was this dolphin meat, which sold so poorly it was donated to feed Japanese school children contaminated the very humans most susceptible to the toxic effect of this chemical.

"Dietary sources Because methylmercury is formed in aquatic systems and because it is not readily eliminated from organisms it is biomagnified in aquatic food chains from bacteria, to plankton, through macroinvertebrates, to herbivorous fish and to piscivorous (fish-eating) fish.[6] At each step in the food chain, the concentration of methylmercury in the organism increases. The concentration of methylmercury in the top level aquatic predators can reach a level a million times higher than the level in the water.[6] This is because methylmercury has a half-life of about 72 days in aquatic organisms resulting in its bioaccumulation within these food chains. Organisms, including humans,[7] fish- eating birds, and fish-eating mammals such as otters and whales that consume fish from the top of the aquatic food chain receive the methylmercury that has accumulated through this process.[6] Fish and other aquatic species are the only significant source of human methylmercury exposure.[6]

The concentration of mercury in any given fish depends on the species of fish, the age and size of the fish and the type of water body in which it is found. [6] In general, fish-eating fish such as shark, swordfish, marlin, larger species of tuna, walleye, largemouth bass, and northern pike have higher levels of methylmercury than herbivorous fish or smaller fish such as tilapia, and herring.[8][9] Within a given species of fish, older and larger fish have higher levels of methylmercury than smaller fish. Fish that develop in water bodies that are more acidic also tend to have higher levels of methylmercury.[6]

Actually, cupcake; it is common for people to not clue into cultural references popular with other age groups. I'm assuming you refer to something a 20 something would know well. Which people in their 50s like me don't.

And that works both ways.

Which is why if you are really a good poster in forums, you give citation either when you post, or when the person to whom you speak is not clear on what you speak of.

As you are not here to engage in lively discussion that gets in the way of your immature, high school level baiting, this is something that does not surprise me in the least.

I see my post there, saying exactly what I meant. Half of you Alaskans are women too, as well as half of us Oregonians.

I assume you are inferring I should have put a verbal wall between women and men. But I meant quite precisely what I said; half of us environmentalists are women. And thus one can infer correctly by this statement that half of us environmentalists are men as well.

Which is the gender classification I obviously have due to having been constructed with blue prints that have an 'X' and 'Y' chromosome in the DNA form they come in.

Your way of thinking is exactly the kind of mentality that in Islamic culture blames women for exciting male libido. It is you who needs to put their mind in gear before they put their lips in motion, not me.

Yep. I've never ate dolphin. no plans to do so. I don't hunt, nor fish...although I know how to do both if it ever became necessary.

Don't allow hunting on our land. I let the fisherman do there thing, no issues, and if they see anything odd they always let us know. Fair trade off.
