Let’s resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let’s remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity. Those are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies but friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.“ -Barack Obama, Post-Partisan President, November 5, 2008. Barack Obama, donning the banner of unity and post-partisanship, whilst simultaneously resisting the temptation to fall back on pettiness, has been frantically crisscrossing the country, trying to drum up support for his agenda, ahead of the November mid-term elections. In a clean and obvious break from the poisonous, partisan politics of Karl Rove that liberals blamed for the polarization of our country under George Bush, Mr. Obama has been canvassing back-yard barbecues and call-in radio shows, urging voters to show up at the voting booths. And how is this imminently unifying figure accomplishing this? What is he saying to rally a divided nation to be “not enemies, but friends,” in the vain of Abraham Lincoln? By saying the following: * “A Republican majority in Congress would mean “hand-to-hand combat” on Capitol Hill for the next two years, threatening policies Democrats have enacted to stabilize the economy.” The post-partisan Obama, October 6, 2010. * “The reason we won [in 2008] is because young people, African Americans, Latinos — people who traditionally don’t vote in high numbers — voted in record numbers. We’ve got to have that same kind of turnout in this election,” The ‘one-nation / one-people’ Obama, October 7, 2010. * “Barack Obama blamed Republicans for leading the nation into “‘ ditch,’ and he said they want to regain power to try and sell the ‘same old snake oil.’” The ‘mature’ Obama, October 7, 2010. * “‘So (Republicans are) betting you’re not going to vote,’ he said. ‘They’re betting you’re going to stay home. That’s what they’re betting on, that people will forget who drove us to the edge of a depression.’” The ‘we share values with the Republican Party’ Obama, September 29, 2010. Who does that sound like? The man who stood on his election night on November 5, 2008, talking about a politically divided nation that needs to put aside our differences and replace them with unity and hope? Was that the real Barack Obama? …or does it sounds like the Barack Obama who within days of taking office in January of 2009, told Republicans in Congress: “elections have consequences- and I won.”
