WASHINGTON – A government investigator says 89,000 stimulus payments of $250 each went to people who were either dead or in prison. The Social Security Administration's inspector general said in a report Thursday that $18 million went to 72,000 people who were dead. The report estimates that a little more than half the payments were returned. The report said $4.3 million went to a little more than 17,000 prison inmates. The payments were part of the government's massive economic recovery package enacted in February 2009. Under the law, the $250 payments were sent to about 52 million Social Security recipients and federal retirees.

What makes you "believe" this? When have you posted about it before without anyone commenting upon it? Did you notice how the payements were discovered? How come you have no comment about a government program which detects waste and fraud and reecovers money? That is a BAD thong according to you?

My selective answer was on topic. According to you this article is moot. And the dead must be able cash checks in your part of the world. Tell me just how did they know so many got the wrong checks? They were returned to the treasury, Mr Silly Foreigner. Since the dead don't cash checks I'll educated you on those sent to prisoners. Do you really think that prison mail isn't opened by staff before it gets to the inmate? On the inmate's unit when mail arrives, all checks and cash are collected, amounts written down on a form and the inmate endorses the checks and signs the form as correct. He then later can file to keep some of it according to policy or it goes into his account, or back to the sender or investigations if considered illegal (hint: SS and other Fed or Gov checks are illegal, but are generally caught and dealt with at the prison's Post Office which initially goes through the mail upon it's arrival) or suspicious. In some facilities all non contraband money goes into the inmate's accounts and is returned to the inmate in the form of script or credit at the canteen or whatever.

At a press conference in her home town of San Francisco, Pelosi explained that the program’s multiplier effect –the amount of money generated in the local economy as the result of the subsidy– far exceeds the nearly $60 billion spent this year by the federal government and is a sure-fire way to stimulate the economy. For every dollar a person receives in food stamps, Pelosi said that $1.79 is put back into the economy. The U.S. Department of Agriculture cites an even higher figure of $1.84.
Reality check - Government spending is down, the deficit is down, government employment is down, and private hiring is up.
