W YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Initial filings for unemployment insurance fell to the lowest level in nearly three months last week, an encouraging sign ahead of the government's highly anticipated monthly jobs report due Friday.

The number of first-time filers for unemployment benefits fell to 445,000 in the week ended Oct. 2, down 11,000 from the week before, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

The number was lower than economists' forecasts of 455,000, according to consensus estimates by Briefing.com, but it still fell in a range that analysts say points to weakness in the job market.

"It's a good data point for the week," said T.C. Robillard, a senior research analyst for Signal Hill Capital. "But, historically speaking, these are still relatively high levels for where we are in the recovery."

The last time initial claims ticked below 450,000 was during the week ended July 10.

But overall, the weekly number has been stuck in a tight range since last November, hovering in the mid to upper 400,000s and even ticking slightly above 500,000 in mid-August.

The most recent four-week moving average, which is calculated to smooth out volatility, was 455,750.

Economists say they're looking for initial claims to fall to 400,000 or lower before they can say a jobs recovery has made noteworthy progress.

Businesses have been sitting on the fence when it comes to hiring, as they face uncertainty about the Bush tax cuts expiring at the end of the year and increased costs from health care reform.

More than 4,460,000 Americans continued to file ongoing unemployment claims in the week ended Sept. 25, the most recent data available.

On Friday, Wall Street will turn its attention to the government's monthly jobs report. Economists polled by Briefing.com forecast the report to show the economy added no jobs in September, and that the unemployment rate ticked up to 9.7% from 9.6% in August.

Another headline could have been 'Almost another half a million jobs lost'.

Its pretty bad when this is touted as 'good news'.

Obama's first all-by-his-lonesome budget, btw, calls for a $1.17 trillion deficit.

And yet you continue to opine for a return to the days when 700k jobs lost in a month was commonplace.

Why would Boofer - or anyone - believe that jobs were only lost last week?

This series is about unemployment claims only and not a statement about hiring.

Congressman Grayson, shouldn't you be working on another negative campaign commercial thats based on false assertions, clever editing, and taking your opponents words totally out of context?

Boofer believes anything if he thinks it will help the GOP gain a vote.

Yes, they will. The legislation that should have been enacted within the first 100 days under Owe-bama...wasnt.Now, its simply too late as it relates to 2011.

Thats why Reagan's numbers were low, as you like to state, at this point in his administration. The difference is Reagan focused on the economy those first two years. And reaped the benefits from mid 1983 thru the 1984 election cycle, carrying 49 states.

Your guy? He blew it right out of the gate, and now its doomed him to a failed single term Presidency. His insane devotion to liberal social theory in place of basic math and economics is 'coming hooooommmmmeeee....to roost' as Reverend Wright famously stated. The first installment of this 'coming home' is in 26 days.

You're losing the House AND the Senate, GO65. Eight seats are gone beyond any reasonable doubt. Four more are 'toss ups' and we both know in the end the 'undecided voter' breaks AGAINST the incumbent party. GOP only needs to win two. I think they just might take all four. Might being the key word here. I know they'll split at worst.

Who in their right mind 22 months ago would have ever suggested West Virginia would go Republican for a Senate seat? Or that Washington State would elect somebody like Rossi?

Its amusing you are already preparing to blame the GOP controlled House and Senate for the economy in 2012. Quite the admission of what we both know is about to happen this year.

But we also know 'its the economy, stupid' and while its possible the Senate could swing back to the Dems in 2012, the House won't, not with the margin they will have, for at least another two election cycles.

Your Messiah won't survive 2012 when Americans see unemployment well over 8% STILL (Owe-bama's own administration admits this as you know).

Its all over but the screaming now.

You know...I expect that from the dwarf.

Its just sad when you 'go there'. You want disrespect, I can play that game better than anyone on the internet, as long as you like.

Your call, GO65.
