The Rasmussen Employment Index jumped six points in September to reach a two-year high of 75.3. The index is up nine points from January and is up 10 points from it's a level a year ago. The index, which measures confidence of workers in the employment market, is at its highest level since September 2008. Now, 20% of workers report their firms are hiring, up one point from last month. Twenty-three percent (23%) of working Americans say their firms are laying workers off, down two points from August. The latest results represent the smallest gap between hiring and lay offs found in two years. But September is the 24th straight month during which the number of workers that reports their firms are laying off is higher than the number who say their firms were hiring. Among private sector managers, just 21% say their firms are hiring, while 25% say their firms are laying people off, showing a slight improvement from August. Typically, an increase in the Employment Index suggests that the government's official report on job creation will be stronger than the month before. Twenty-nine percent (29%) of workers are worried about losing their jobs, up a point from last month. A year ago, roughly the same number (30%) were worried about losing their jobs.

Among other things, this chart illustrates the more subtle and pernicious nature of the current decline in consumption. The 2010 decline had already exceeded the length of the complete 2008 contraction cycle — the combined contraction and recovery. Now it has exceeded the depth of the contraction as well. Private sector jobs FELL by 39,000. Thats the exact opposite of what normally happens at this time of year.
