SOUTH FULTON, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities say firefighters in a far western Tennessee city let a mobile home burn down because the owner didn't pay a $75 yearly fee for fire protection. Jeff Vowell, city manager of South Fulton, told the Union City Daily Messenger that the city fire department let Gene Cranick's doublewide trailer home burn last week because he didn't pay the subscription common in many rural areas. Cranick's home is outside city limits, but South Fulton offers fire protection to nearby residents for a fee and did protect a neighboring house that paid. Police say Cranick's son was so angry he later went to the fire house and punched the chief. City officials didn't return calls and a message left at a phone listing for Gene Cranick was not immediately returned. --- Information from: Union City Daily Messenger, www.ucmessenger.com

In some jurisdictions paying the initial service fee allows the Fire Dept to inspect your dwelling and adjoining premises at any time and levy fines or more fees for problems they find that they deem need correction.
The irony with me is that I support both actions here... Newton's 4th law...
Gangsters did this in the 20's-30's too, it was called "Extortion", or, "Protection Money"... Extortion, outwresting, and/or exaction is a criminal offense which occurs when a person unlawfully obtains either money, property or services from a person (s), entity, or institution, through coercion. Refraining from doing harm is sometimes euphemistically called protection. Extortion is commonly practiced by organized crime groups. the worst part was that the next door neighbor's home caught fire as a result - and he did pay the bill.
Not all that different from the days when firefighting was the function of insurance providers.
I doubt that policy would go over well in areas with tinder dry conditions and Santa Ana winds.
Hmmm.I wonder if the fire departments insurance is invalidated if they respond to a home 'outside the city limits' that isn't paying for fire protection. As for the son, he should have punched his idiot father out for not paying the $75.

So, a fire department let three dogs and a cat burn to death because a homeowner forgot to pay a fee. They allowed a family lose everything they own because of seventy-five dollars. Why couldn't they have have billed him after saving his house and his pets even if it was a penalty amount? This is unacceptable. Don't we have a moral obligation to help others who are in obvious need? Since when do we stop being human over money?

One would like to think that human decency, if such a thing still exists, would have prompted the firefighters to rescue any children that could have been trapped in the blaze. But then again, this was a mobile home park in Tennessee... :(

Well, you'd also think that human decency would prompt a not-for-profit hospital to provide services to low-income people without resorting to putting liens on homes if those individuals can't afford to pay for treatment--but that's not happening, either.

That statement has no basis in reality. Every nation that tops the list in terms of health services and every nation that tops the list in medical tourism has socialized medicine.
And did the illegal aliens hold a gun to the heads of hospital administrators and force them to charge more for the same services to the uninsured than the insured? Did the illegal aliens force these hospital big-wigs to set up off- shore accounts for their tidy profits from their not-for-profit, tax-exempt hospitals. Those are some powerful illegal aliens. And, of course, it was the god- and country-hating socialists who forced The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) upon us (as of March 23, 2010). This horrible act requires non-profit hospitals to meet the mandates of their tax-exempt status, demanded that hospitals comply with hospital charity care and community standards (like telling poor uninsured people that financial assistance programs exist), and even expects the hospitals to provide greater transparency in their costs to the uninsured. How awful.
